About an hour northeast of Los Angeles, nestled among the joshua trees and the hush-hush R&D operations of the aerospace industry, sits the home of Emory Motorsports. The company’s founder and nonstop ball of energy is Rod Emory who, along with his father Gary, effectively kickstarted the “outlaw” Porsche movement with their eye-catching 356 builds. Rod's history as a visionary outsider is even deeper than we knew, as we discovered when we recently visited him and his team at their shop.
In 1948, Rod’s grandfather Neil cemented the Emory name in automotive history when he started Valley Custom Shop in Burbank, Calif. While other hot rod builders were chopping rooflines, shaving trim, and pulling fenders, Neil Emory developed a reputation for his streamlined builds that employed techniques such as channeling and sectioning. The goal then, as now, was to create a customized car that did not draw attention to any single modification but which rather presented itself as a coherent whole.
Neil Emory eventually found his way into the world of European cars when he joined the Chick Iverson Porsche/Volkswagen team in Orange County, Calif. in 1962. Neil’s son, Gary, came aboard a few years later, working his way up to Parts Department Manager and later, in partnership with Iverson, as the founder of Porsche Parts Obsolete in 1974-the same year his son, Rod, was born.
By the time he was ten years old, Rod had spent countless hours in the shop with his father and grandfather as they pulled bumpers, louvered decklids, and painted numbers on the sides of Porsche 356s. Eventually, family friends dubbed the Emorys “outlaws,” referring both to the cars themselves as well as to the their relegation to the parking lot during big Porsche events.
Much has changed, however. Over time, the artistry of Emory Porsche builds became not only accepted but celebrated for their attention to detail in addition to their faithfulness to the Porsche tradition of design and performance. Perhaps most importantly, as you’ll see in this video, these cars are just a whole lot of fun to drive.

I remember as a teenager visiting a car show, seeing my first 356, in the flesh, as it were, and becoming hooked on the Porsche marque for life. Clearly, Rod Emory has an eye for design and the cars he builds are even more beautiful than the originals from Porsche. I enjoyed hearing his description of how he learned the tools of the trade from his grandfather - just imagine how proud his grandfather would be to see what Rod has done with this knowledge.

"Take a design, look at it, and see how you can evolve it, but make it so all the components and pieces blend together, and you can't necessary pick out what has been done, but as a whole you know the thing has been modified, but nothing really stands out." I share this guy's design philosophy, it is definitely the only way to mod cars! Also, the video does seem a bit less refined than previous ones, but I still love seeing the cars :)

What I love about this story..and many others on here is the influences of family particularly Dads & Grandfathers. My dad taught me most of what I know about cars. If I had a brake problem, he would start me off then get me to take over..whilst he guided me. His philosophy was that the best way to learn was to do it yourself. My dad passed away 5 years ago now..but as my son gets older I will teach him the same way my dad taught me. Another great video!

I always like those wide spaced, giant lug pattern on those old V-Dubs and Porsches. Seems to me it would give better wheel stability, like it would be harder to break a stud compared to a smaller lug spacing.

@MindDezign
@MindDezign 6 жыл бұрын
Rubens Junior 550s are so cool to look at and drive. They are Uber light down to the hose clamps that hold the aluminum body to the chassis tubes. But cramped cockpit ,for aerodynamic racing purposes. Not a good two seater great for just a man and machine ,driving. ( Like a cafe racer) . I've driven real twin cam 550s and replicas. 356 are more of a tank,In a good way ,robust chassis. A replica would be easier to obtain as the 356 are no longer inexpensive.This guy, has years of contacts ,has them, coming to him, by nature of his business . I've loved Outlaw 356 cars for ever, they have always matched my automotive, sports car, tastes, I'm building two Z cars a 240z , and a 280z (chassis heavily modded to bring it back to 240 weight.) Both L28 with twin carbs, The 280 has 240 tail lights and turn signals,and a 240 Dash and steering column and steering wheel) just two fun Z cars for the street ,to drive daily ,thank you Florida.Great car builders,OUTLAW cars ,all rock hard.

He mentions the car should get about 50 hrs on teh 1.6l before needing to "freshen it up". What all would this entail as it sounds as if its not a full rebuild?
@rodemory
@rodemory 9 жыл бұрын
Alex Martinez Since this particular engine is the vintage race motor with higher compression and we spin it to 7300 rpm it is always good to pull them apart and inspect the bearings and tune up the valves, check piston wear, etc between 25 and 50 hours. We also built a street motor for it that will run for years but only has about 110hp. Now the other two cars driving in the background have 2.4 and 2.6 liter motors in them. The Aqua Marine Blue Met Speedster has an overhead cam POLO motor and the Coupe has a big pushrod 914 based motor. Both put out 190-200 HP and will run for years.
