Isn't it nice that someone else can buy these vehicles and then let us travel with them vicariously. Not quite as good as doing it yourself, but one can always dream.

"I'm a doctor, I used to work in the ER for quite some time, and I've seen so many cases where people had probably planned for a lot of things to do in the future, but they never got there. And I swear to myself I will never be that guy that takes all his dreams into the grave, because there are no guarantees in life; there's no guarantee that you're not going to be the one that gets hit by the bus tomorrow and ends up in the ER and never makes it out of there. 1 in 5 adult males doesn't make it to retirement but everybody plans for it you know."

Moving to a country with high wages, continue living like you did when you were a student, not spending money on stuff you don't need and saving everything you can... next to being lucky that you can do all these things and find a partner who's just as stupid as you to want to do the same thing. 🤷‍♂ You don't need to be a doctor to afford this. We both had 10 years less time to work and save than somebody who hasn't studied. It's all about living small and saving as much as you can... ...and most importantly: It doesn't have to be an Excap with a Krug module... People have been doing similar things with much cheaper rigs and by no means anyhow worse. We're just lucky that we could afford it but that doesn't make the adventure in any way bigger or better.

I went to a finance talk, and someone did the math that if person A started working as a UPS driver after graduating high school, and person B went straight to medical school after debt free college (which may not happen! both in the debt area and going straight into med school is less likely nowadays) - then person B will need EIGHTEEN YEARS to catch up to the net worth of person A if person B takes on full loans. Assuming both parties don't have cash cows for family, that is. So we can extrapolate that anyone who earns more than a UPS driver probably has more net earnings than a physician will have for much longer than eighteen years, especially if investment, retirement plans, etc. are planned at a young professional age. Y'all look at a doctor's salary but never think about the decades (!!) of lost wages they take on top of massive debt to get that salary. It's all rainbows when you see that salary afterwards but not the financial burden they have to take on before then. Obviously a family that can take on that burden eases things tremendously, but that would be a different conversation than by anyone just being a doctor. Point being, is that anyone, not just doctors, can afford "expensive" things if they save, prioritize, and plan accordingly. It may take longer than others, or it may not be prioritized enough to make into reality (e.g. kids, health). But that just means that this particular couple chose not to do certain things that other people chose to do, to afford this cost. Or better yet, figure out a way to achieve the same adventure without having to take on as much of a cost!
@miguelosterroht

It’s much cheaper than an apartment in Switzerland. It’s all about priorities. It’s expensive for a vehicle, not really for a house.

Thank you for the tour of your truck. I too like you worked in the ER for 25 years followed by ICU. Your statement about not being that guy. All too often I cared for people who dreamed of a retirement and travelling to far off places. Always putting it off and never realizing their dreams. Then one day they find themselves laying on a stretcher in the ER being told they have experienced a massive stroke that will probably incapacitate them for the rest of their lives. The agonizing truths followed by tears are the only things left of their dreams.

For 5 years we are on the road with a normal sized Van. We have seen a lot of those monster trucks. They catch our eyes. For sure. But the have all the same in comon. The never could pass trough the little village roads in Bolivia, Spain or Albania. The are much to high for many bridges in the country side an got permanently stuck in the low hanging electric wires in India and South America. But most astonishing is , ...that those people with there 100.000 $ vehicles never come out of there cars to talk, to sit on a camp fire, to be part of the neighborhood on campground or on wild camps. It's just our experience for many years shared with many other travellers. It's a unanswered miracle. "I love my steel home" What's the petrol consumption for those 2 people of approximately 140 and a mountain of steel of 8 tons on a 100 km ?? It's O.K. to make your dreams become reality. But that works only in Sweden and North America. I would not like to park in an Guatemala village on a plaza with that tank to buy a handful tomatoes.

Very true observation. This trend of overlanding is just another type of consumerism and status chase among the "tasteful" upper middle classes. Changing the vulgar show off-ism with luxury cars and clothes to offroad vehicles and outdoor brands that cost the same if not more.

This all I want & need in life . I could make that vehicle last the rest of my life . All my stress would be gone & I would be able to travel and live off grid living my dream life . I would have to come back to society every now and then to make more money possibly if I don’t have enough saved up or need resources of course but I wouldn’t mind it because at the end of the day if i don’t like where I’m at or what I’m doing & I have enough gas in the tank I could drive to another location or state. That’s my idea of freedom. One day I wish to own land & build shipping container home , but this is my first goal in life is to own something like this , people call me crazy but watch me do it !

Very high up doors, in general extremely hard to break in... and a climb through to the cab to get away quickly if need be. 🤷‍♂ Other than that: common sense not to stay in dangerous places, information of other travellers and the benefit of the doubt that people are much friendlier than we assume... at least that's our experience.
