From a storage unit in rural Illinois, KZfaqr Styropyro builds high-powered laser experiments in a makeshift lab for his nearly half a million subscribers. A chemist by training, Drake Anthony started his Styropyro KZfaq channel over a decade ago, when he was still a teenager.
As KZfaq clamps down in recent years on the types of content it allows on its platform, Styropyro claims that DIY, science-focused KZfaqrs like him are getting unreasonably moderated. Motherboard travelled to rural Illinois to meet up with him at his DIY science lab.

Just found out about your channel, it is awesome! I love lasers too, so far I only managed to turbocharge an eBay green laser with an adjustable power supply, got it to pop balloons. Definitely want to get more powerful stuff, it is easier because we don't have regulations for lasers here. Only the price is the limit.

It was a very stupid question. t doesn't matter why he makes something like this or why he owns it. Why should what you think is right or wrong have anything to do with another person. To each their own. We live in the United States. That used to mean freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want. As long as it doesn't affect or hurt anyone else. Every time I have shown his videos to a younger person their eyes light up in amazement. He inspires kids to learn and even adults like me. THis kid is amazing.

@@user-vr5zk9ox8d no, a monopoly has nothing to do with censorship. The reason KZfaq isn't a monopoly is that many, many advertisers are on the platform so KZfaq must conform to what's advertiser friendly. Gabe Jones-Lang They’re a monopoly in the sense that there is really no competition for KZfaq as there isn’t anything quite like it on any other platform. The videos are usually jam-packed full of info so learning at least one thing per video only happens if im distracted!

I've never seen Styropyro do anything unsafe with a laser - and he always has his safety goggles . on when he plays with the dangerous units. Anyone can make flash paper/powder, the info is all over the internet. it looks pretty impressive setting off the stuff with a laser (heck I've done it myself with my high powered green laser). With regard to his laser bazooka getting flagged and taken down, he wasn't showing anyone how to build one, just that he'd built one, and this is what its capable of. The only person placed in harms way was himself, and he is well versed in the dangers of lasers.

This guy is a true influencer. He is not only paving the way for young science enthusiasts, he is showing people that you don't have to be some sort of special mind, or have endless money, to explore the world through science and understand the truths about nature. I really hope he gets to work with a laser fusion team, or something positive in the future. He would make a wonderful "M" type for an actual real life Batman.

Dying Moths to be fair though, he IS a special mind, well off the scale of normal. But sure, the gifted kids need to watch this so they see where they can take their talents, rather than having school tell them where to stop.
@welcometocattown2036
@welcometocattown2036 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Leitch it would be really great if we stop teaching children that science is just for "special kids". Science is simply objective observation of the natural world. while it is true that a person can have a mind that is especially excited about science, the understanding is based around the simplicity of observation, which is obtainable by almost all people of all ages. I spent years, in Denver, working with people of all ages, teaching integrated sciences; all of it in an attempt to improve scientific literacy, and improve societal issues through the better understanding. It is a universal language that can connect us all. I have had people from age 5 to 75 sit down and learn basic cell theory, general plant sciences, major concepts in physics such as Thermodynamics, or more complex matters like evolution. Yes, he is a more special individual, because of his excitement and dedication alone; but anyone, even someone who desperately hates science, or is someone who is not neurotypical like me (schizophrenia / depersonalisation disorder/ autism/ brain damage), could still learn all of this stuff. scientific literacy is currently at a point where we have people who very seriously think the earth is flat, cling to ideas that the government is using airliners to dump mind control virus and barium (for some reason they think barium is being used to purposefully cause cancer and kill off the populous) all over the world, or that their microwaves are changing the atomic structure of water and food and causing conditions like cancer and autism. These are the same people that pay 4x as much when a soap label says "antimicrobial" because they don't grasp that all soap is. Or they buy magnet bracelets, base decisions on astrology, or still believe in imaginary friends like Jesus/Ganesh/Fairies/Buddha/ Mahummad / bipartisan politicians/ unicorns/ even mermaids... So yeah, time to start spouting "Science is for everyone and is reachable by all humans", instead of "you really just need to be special/ only gifted people can do this/ you really have to be a certain type to be a scientist" by cause we are at a bit of a standstill right now (aside from a few people still aggressively trailblazing) yeah, no more pushing the agenda of "science is special" because, science is absolutely natural
@bobs12andahalf2
@bobs12andahalf2 5 жыл бұрын
Dying Moths I fully agree. But I would suggest that enthusiasm for science is linked to capacity to understand it as well as opportunity to explore. I watch these young guys on KZfaq doing their experiments and feel a little jealous. I was actively steered away from this kind of thing right at the time when I had the enthusiasm and capacity for it. I think there's a problem where kids are made to think that science (and engineering, and many other things) is something that other people do, rather than something they can do themselves.

Imagine if Nikola Tesla had to deal with KZfaq standards while trying to contribute his ideas. Society wants us all in cages so we all feel safe from one another due to what we don't understand. Can the "bad guys" hurt us all from what is presented? Sure. But the fact is that the world is NOT a "save space" and as soon as we try to force it into that then we lose our scientific imagination, our curiosity, and real ambition for genuine contribution to humanity. This was a great video to watch.

they are trying to dumb us all down so we can be controlled. what is the best way to control someone, make them fear you. fear is often the lack of understanding of something. if you make people dumb and fearful, you can impose things on them, and they will give up their rights. its like this whole gun thing... there was a video on here where these guys were going around getting signatures from people who wanted to ban guns. 99% of the people who wanted guns banned didnt know the first thing about guns, other than they are dangerous and kill people. but that is what the news shows... that is ALL the news shows... its ridiculous... people need to open their eyes and actually see what is going on... its happening so gradually that most are completely oblivious to it...

ion77799 You're talking as if KZfaq is society. They're a business, their goal is $. They're trying to appease their advertisers who don't want their products associated with certain things, and they're trying to appease the creators who complain they're not getting paid enough. If people want to make scientific contributions there are better mediums to do it through (I.e. publishing research or creating products). Get your head out of your ass and stop being pretentious.

@ion77799 Really civilization is a giant safe space. That's why we have a military and police, to keep people from harming each-other and in some cases themselves. However, if you want danger you can join the military, or if you want to fight someone you can challenge them to a boxing match. We have designated dangerous areas. What stinks is some people think they should ban other people from learning about dangerous things, or engaging in activity that could be dangerous to themselves. KZfaq does have a different issue though. For example, high speed car chases were a big problem in LA, California until news organizations were banned from showing them. Turns out people were just doing it for their 1 - 30 minutes of getting attention, and endangering everyone else for it.

That is because religious institutions at the time got it in their heads that knowledge of how the universe works goes against their god’s teachings and ‘will.’ This threatened them because they believed that it would make religion irrelevant as the ‘answer to everything.’ At the time, it wasn’t common practice to separate government and religious institutions like it is now. Result: religious nutcases had access to the resources needed to forcibly enforce their way of thinking (military, police, politics, etc). What was one of their modus operandi? Any knowledge or smart people not directly a part of the religious institution were heretics/witches/etc and should be burned along with their research.

Drakes channel is inspirational & I can certainly understand his frustration when some of his videos are removed. I actually owe Drake my eyesight for persuading me to spend a little more and get the correct specification eye protection. Keep safe everyone. Love from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 United Kingdom.

Styropyro has quite possibly changed my life, along with The Thought Imporium, Nile Red, and a few other science youtubers. They got me to realize science wasn't just filling out worksheets in class and maybe mixing 2 chemicals together that might slightly change color and that's it. They showed me how science lets people control things with brain cells grown in a dish, or how you can turn plastic gloves into grape soda, or all the ways electricity and light can light stuff on fire. Seeing them get treated like shit by youtube really sucks, because so many kids might go on thinking that science is only just boring worksheets and lame labs. Especially because, at least in my experience, schools aren't really doing much to help the situation. Mostly for safety reasons, which is fair but at the same time kids should be allowed to make rockets in science, or make stuff that goes bang and burns bright. Stuff that's actually interesting, and relatively harmless. Hopefully we can make science fun again, and I hope these youtubers will keep making fun science content for a while.

He kinda reminds me if Syndrome from the Incredibles grew up without a chip on his shoulder and got really into moths and lasers.
