I just used this wacky rig and caught nice bass on lake Ouachita outside Hot Springs. My sister just got a houseboat there and I told her she should invite you to teach her some techniques. I was catching bass in her cove, listening to the beautiful birds and in awe of God’s beautiful creation. Suddenly, I’m hearing someone singing, I look behind me and she is paddling her kayak out to me with a drink and an egg and sausage burrito! For several years she has been caring for our elderly parents who passed two years ago 2 months apart. We learned the love of the water and fishing from our dear dad. I told her I bet Gene and his wife would love to spend some fishing time on lake Ouachita. We have mainly bass fished and salt water Texas gulf fishing. Would love to learn more about catching crappie. We have found many of the locals to not want to share their crappie secrets or places they catch them. They just said…..” oh we know where the submerged brush piles are”. Well, we never have had “fancy” gadgets for “finding” fish. We were at least going to buy fresh crickets but none of the bait shops had any. We drove 25 min out to Walmart by Hot Springs Village and they didn’t have any. So we watched some of your wonderful crappie videos and were wishing we were on your boat. Im in Memphis and I fish from my kayak at Glen Springs lake mainly for bass. The guys with their “fancy” boats and equipment always want to know how a gal in a kayak has a stringer of bass while they came in empty handed. I just grin, because a kayak is stealthy and I sneak up on them! I could stay out there all day but my legs getting too old to unfold out of the kayak. I just purchased a used Jon boat and haven’t tried it out yet. My son has been too busy and I didn’t want to take it out by myself for the first time. My sweet husband of 46 years has never enjoyed fishing but he is very supportive of my hobbie and never complains when I purchase more poles, tackle, reels, etc….

I was taught this technique by my neighbor and fishing buddy back in the late 1970's. I was still a teenager and wasn't terribly impressed due to the worm not looking like the worms on the fishing shows of the day. I figured if the guys who have their own tv shows don't fish like this, then it can't possibly work. Im 63 now and will say I have caught about 90% of the largemouth using this technique when fishing a plastic worm. I prefer a 6" Creme worm and put the hook through the egg sack. I also use split shot sinkers about 14"-16" up the line. No other way of fishing a plastic worm has ever worked as well as this for me. Back in the 80's and 90's I had more than a few "experts" laugh at this rig but at the end of the day my stringer was always bigger than theirs. It's caught bass from small farm ponds to lake Okeechobee.

Mr Richard, you told me exactly what I needed to hear. Last weekend in a 6 acre farm pond, I had 20 bass in one day almost all on top water. My all time PB bass was caught on a craw very slowly fished right on the bottom, he was 19.5" long and perhaps 4lbs. Incredible fishing and an unforgettable weekend. Today, I caught 1 in 3 hours of fishing. I have been feeling stumped because I don't know how to fish the water here, only the farm ponds back home where I caught that hog. The key is gratitude. The bass I caught today was a beautiful, healthy, 2lb male. I'm glad that I met him. It was a wonderful evening of fishing. Thank you Mr Richard.

Good video as always! A trick i do with a wacky rig is i thread a small piece of electrical shrink wrap over the worm and then drive my hook through the shrink wrap and the worm simultaneously. This produces a more economical and ecological rig. I have caught as many as 17 on the same worm and probably more important the fish never throws the worm during the fight so I do not leave scrap plastic in the lake for fish to consume since many times when a fish consumes a scrap plastic worm it can't digest it and dies. Love your videos and I always remember when I go fishing ... the lake and the fish owe me nothing. It is a privilege to be a part of their world.

@Richard. I use the same method, but have recently decided to go barbless. There are many benefits, including not torturing the fish, avoiding gut hook complications, and less trauma means a quicker return to feeding for the fish. I know it also means that you may lose some, but I think benefits outweigh the risks . Wondering how you feel about this.

I rig my wacky worms without a ring for the hook but I've learned that they make a ring that has a slot on the top for your hook available at tackle warehouse your worms will last longer because you don't put your hook into the worm and your hookups will increase. Good fishing 🎣 iv been fishing and using a weightless worm and switched to wacky using the same 3/0 WGH with no problem . And remember there's no such thing as a bad day fishing .
