Please excuse my big head in the frame.
Demonstrating LCD panel replacement on an M1 MacBook Air 2020. On M1 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, displays can no longer be swapped without caveats. Since the ambient light sensor contains calibration data, replacing this component results in True Tone being disabled. Here is how Vancouver Mac Service Centre gets around this issue by performing an LCD-only replacement. LCD only replacements require practice and skill since there are many pitfalls that may cause quality issues following the repair. This technique has been refined on 100s of MacBook LCD replacements over the years and allows for original quality and finish following the repair.
Vancouver Mac Service Centre (vancouvermac.ca) specializes in fixing MacBook laptops, providing affordable, professional and quick service to the Greater Vancouver Area. We offer free diagnostics and flat rate pricing for a wide range of computer repair services, from logic board repair to LCD replacement.

This is an amazing video! Your technique is perfect and covers the whole process for a difficult repair. The two things that are unresolved for me when I tried it this week are 1) a safe procedure to remove the LCD without liquid damage to the diffuser layers or cracking the fragile LCD panel itself, and 2) where to obtain replacement packages of diffusers (maybe all six in one pack?) I have tried a heated silicon separator pad (65 and 70 C), a hot air rework station, an automotive suction cup with various prying tools - very thin metal, metal almost as thick as a credit card, a plastic guitar pick, a plastic razor blade, and a playing card. I tried sliding the tools around the edge to gently loosen the adhesive, but barely any pressure without heat will crack the glass. 65 C on the heated pad didn't really help loosen the adhesive, but 70 C created halos on the bottom silver diffuser layer. I didn't test that one, but I'm fairly certain it won't look good with the halos. To remove the LCD panel, I also tried isopropyl alcohol, 99% alcohol, iFixit Adhesive Remover, and Goo Gone. Even my attempts with a single drop of liquid in the corners resulted in liquid damage to the diffuser layers, which I can't seem to find for sale anywhere. I replace the entire display assembly fairly often and had eight "dead" displays in the garage recycling which I used to practice on. I may have to make the rounds to our local recycling centers to get some duds to practice on because I don't have this down yet. For someone who works from a home office without the benefit of a clean room, the best bet to avoid dust, cat hair, lint, or any other contaminants when working with the diffuser layers is to clean the bathroom sink, mirror, and lightfixtures, take a hot shower without running the fan, put on a clean shirt, and while it's still steamy do any work with the layers on the clean sink. Just pulling the layers off one at a time creates static, which draws all manner of floaty bits in the air, if you're outside of the bathroom. If you get a cat hair, it's difficult to even locate the correct side of the correct layer to "dab" the hair with a bit of leftover screen adhesive on a tweezer to remove it. As an aside, it there any way to clean or restore the coatings on any of the layers? I was thinking about testing several different methods next weekend. Thank you so much for a super-helpful video! Any tips on safely removing the LCD when it seems very stuck together or on where one can order LCD diffuser packs?

Thank you for watching! • I find heat is not effective for 2016-2020 display assemblies. It is better to use just alcohol and go slowly • Layer 6 (topmost layer) can be cleaned somewhat with pure isopropanol and a clean q-tip or similar. Layer 1 (bottommost layer) can also be cleaned with a lint-free cloth. However, the middle layers are usually impossible to clean properly and must be replaced. If you roll up a small length of polyamide tape, it can be used to lift dust off the layers without leaving residue. • You should use a very thin shim for removing the LCD, ideally between 0.15mm and 0.05mm. It helps a lot to prevent cracking the LCD if you need to reuse it. • You can purchase the diffuser packs from china, even original ones are available if you ask around.

I tried this procedure on my own and it is very difficult to extract the LCD from the frame. I touched the backlight sheets and I have to replace them. Also it is very difficult to get the LCD out in one pice, it broke. Also I touched the cable on the top and it has a cut. It is better to buy some broken displays from Ebay and try it several times, it is not easy. For myself, I will buy one Display directly from Apple, because I don't want to lose True Tone.

I have made all these mistakes in the past as well, they do not make it easy unfortunately. Cutting the small cable for the light sensor at the top is particularly annoying since it is very tedious to run jumper cables to repair the tear. Lots of trial and error for LCD-only repairs

Great video, thanks a lot! I have a question: When reinstalling the "display frame rubber gasket", do you use glue so that it doesn't move when the LCD is mounted? I can see that you are using cotton buds after replacing the rubber gasket. Is there any glue or liquid on them? Many thanks

The original adhesive can be reused for the rubber gasket, it is custom-cut for the gasket's groove so it works best. If there is an issue with the adhesive, a 1mm double-sided thin tape can be used as a substitute. Usually there is some debris/dust that collects on the gasket, so it is cleaned off after with the cotton bud.

I recently discovered that the TrueTone is paired to the Logicboard on the M1s, so when a shell comes in that is too damaged to repair or the LED/Cam strip has liquid damage, I have to get replacement shells and swap the cameras. Unfortunately, the M2 is a huge issue because the LCD itself is serialized, so repairing it leads to a weird glitch. Hopefully someone finds a solution to that.

For the newer 14” MacBook Pros (M1 Pro, M2) with the mini-LED array backlights, the TCON ICs (controller and EEPROM) need to be transferred to the new LCD panel to avoid having the block artifacts show up on the image

@@vancouvermac I'd read about that, but couldn't find any videos of someone actually doing it...until now. It's a shame we can't find a solution that involves just running some software to to pair the new chips up to the board. There was that one German guy who developed a tool to re-calibrate the lid sensor on a unit, so that gives me some hope that there could be a solution like that, but until then, it's breaking out the hot air station and hoping for the best. I'm sure after a few hundred, it gets easier.

Thank you for this tutorial! I'm wondering if I do not care for true tone, can I just buy a used genuine apple screen from eBay with the top lid and swap it?

How you replease a true tone ?

You can't that is why it's a strictly LCD replacement not the entire screen assembly. That feature is tied into one or several chips. The only way to keep it is strictly replacing the damaged LCD and not the entire assembly.
