I've used a Maasdam puller for several years. I use a 150' rope without a hook end, I either tie a loop or use a dogbone knot tool. To get better leverage use a fishing pole to cast over a limb, tie your rope to the fishing line and retrieve it around the tree, loop it, pull it tight and you have a high pulling point.
@TonysCoolTools
@TonysCoolTools 7 ай бұрын
Ralph, I’ve had several viewers tell me they removed the hook and used another option for securing the device. Had to look up what a dog bone knot was but that is definitely a good one, I believe some people call it a soft shackle. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Thanks Tony. A new version of an old Tool. (Grip hoist) Does the Eye of the Strap not fit in the Hook ? The least amount of rigging in the line of pull the better. You could have reversed the ends of the Puller and just used it as a 2:1 ratcheting pulley Mike M.

Tom you are so right about a snatch block and UTV or truck to pull out a log. The main purpose I use the Maasdam is tensioning the tree for better control when directional felling. This is a great tool! I use it in applications were I cannot get my skidder and winch close enough. Pulled a number of trees leaning out over main roads back to fall the opposite way. Once the tree goes the way you want it to fall it is a good idea to release the holding paw and of course have enough rope and get out of the way, by releasing the paw it allows the rope to freely pully through. I have had instances were I didn't release it and the rope got hung up on another tree and pulled tight causing the tree to swing another direction or it puts alot of stress on the tool breaking it or burning the rope as the force pulls it across the locked drum. Also be mindful if attaching it to a tree that you do not want to damage, use a tree savor or heavy rope instead of a chain in those instances. Definitely a great tool to own for alot of uses. 👍

12:52, FWIW, I think it'd be better to put BOTH blue ends through that carabiner. If you check out hoisting and rigging info, what you have there (and earlier in the video) are called "choker hitches", which are not as strong as a "basket hitch" like if you had the carabiner through both end loops. Also better than the basket hitch is the double wrap basket hitch (assuming you had a strap long enough) where you'd make a second loop around the bars and then use both loop ends to hook into the one carabiner. Anyway, those straps are probably stronger than some of the other hardware and more than sufficient in almost any configuration, but hey. :-) Thanks for the video. I'm probably going to get one of the rope pullers after watching this.

Hey Tony! Could you test multi pulley block and tackle? Old timers and Amish still use them. I've used small outfits to stretch fence myself! It would maybe save some of that hyper speed motion on the rope puller! Chris will be able to tell you how much better that hyper speed works if you play some banjo or other 'country' stringed instrument at the same time. It's tough being a modern type super hero, believe me, I know!! Not like the old days when you could be a super hero without much fuss! 'Course it was even easier if you were a mild mannered newspaperman!! But a mild mannered firewood chucker with great firewood wealth keeps him under the radar pretty good. Jury's still out on mild mannered tool guys!! So many little details! But you still da' Man!!!

You are 100% right, I was just giving a demonstration of what it could do. When I have to break out this tool that means I can’t use my ATV, truck or tractor and I’m in an unacceptably part of the woods. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

You could add a set of compound pulleys to increase the pulling strength and reduce the cranking effort with hard to pull items or heavier items. Only restriction would be the ropes weight rating. Great video.

Jeffrey you are right about adding a double shiv pulley to increase pulling power. I’ll be showing compounded pulling options on a future video. Really appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

The Rope break strength is only between each Pully. The weak link is the 2 Attachment points

Is 100 ft sufficient for pulling down trees or do you sometimes need it to be longer
@TonysCoolTools
@TonysCoolTools 2 ай бұрын
That all depends, if you have a tree close to use as an anchor point. In 90% of the trees I’ve used the Maasdam puller the 100’ of rope was plenty. If not I just add additional rope. Thanks for watching and commenting.👍TCT

Great video. Cool tool to have when you need it. Question: Will it work with existing ropes I already own? Example: a 60 m 9 mm braided climbing rope
@TonysCoolTools
@TonysCoolTools Жыл бұрын
Jim I not sure. The Maasdam can use either a 3 or 12 strand braided polyester rope. If I were you I’d call Maasdam and ask. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

I have a 16’ orchard ladder , so much more stable being 3 legs than 4 on uneven ground indeed . Maybe ladder use show idea
@TonysCoolTools

Eddie you know the one thing I’m missing and would love to have is an orchard ladder. I agree an orchard ladder is much more stable. I do however love my little giant ladder system. The legs are wider so it’s more stable but an orchard ladder would help me during apple harvest time. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Also a comment about the way you use synthetic strap. By chocking it… You typically loose 25% or it a .75 multiplier. By using a basket method, you double the WLL… Why not show, basket, strongest method?

Jean you’re right, there are couple other options like the basket method or the Portable Winch accessor called the a Ropewizer. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

I like your videos in general. Well explained and detailed. What I truly think you need to improve is safety. I see you handle a lot of tools. In real situations. But you’re NOT following manufacturers instructions, you’re not following safety regulations, or best practices. I wish you would lead by example. Thank you otherwise.

Michael, the Massdam rope puller is different than a come along. The rope is a triple poly stranded rope that fits into the groves of the pully. Thanks for watching and commenting. TCT
