Pretty straightforward bicycle tuneup! This thing sat, and sat, and sat, unridden for years, but with a little bit of cleaning, lubing and adjustment it's as good as new again!

What he is working against is how many new parts he can put on without going into a new bike price. Ultimately it’s his bikes and his bills. I think Andy does a great job.

Your tune up/clean/adjust videos have inspired me to bring my wife's 50 year old (her favorite) 10 speed back to life. Following your methods, I lubed the cables and all moving parts. Cleaned the frame and hubs etc. with Dawn PW. adjusted the brakes and derailleurs. She loves it! Thanks for making my wife happy! 👍

Taking off the wheels, loosening the cables and lubing them, cleaning up the frame, oiling pivots. . . . The same as I have done so many times. Yet, I am addicted to watching The Farmer go through his routine, with puzzlers and problems here and there. Thanks Farmer.

This Neko is now neato! And $399 is not too much at all. Recently I had to educate a customer: " I find a bike and evaluate it, I make everything work well and I clean it up, I take pictures and publish an ad, I answer lots of "Is this available" inquiries, I set up appointments, I advise customers and I guarantee the bike. Somehow I like to be rewarded for that." He paid my rock bottom price and brought back another customer.

Tip for home mechanics doing V-brakes: Back out the barrel shifter about 3/8", then loosen and pull ALL the slack out of the cable down at the levers. Tighten the clamp and put the barrel shifter all the way in. Voila, consistent setup without multiple rounds of tighten/loosening and fiddling. It is easier for those without as much experience as Andy has to do it by feel.

Thanks for a great video, BikeFarmer! I'm watching you from Europe and I've been able to use skills I've learned from your videos in order to keep our family bikes in great shape. Your town is lucky to have such an honest and knowledgable bike mechanic. That Trek will last a lifetime for the price of a few tanks of gas. Excellent value at $399.

If you align the slots in the front brake barrel adjuster and its locknut with the slot in the brake lever housing, you can unhook the cable from the lever and get better access to put the lube in there.

Your work on the bikes is always great! The bikes are definitely worth the money. The 12-year-old girl will probably still be using the bike for many years to come and, even then, with a little care, will still have a lot of fun with it. At least that's how I feel, last winter I completely dismantled my old bike (bought around 1986) and put it back in shape. Now it is absolutely suitable for everyday use again and I use it regularly and leave my normal bike behind. Many greetings from Germany and keep it up!

Not bad. I've been watching for a while now and you've got your routine and you cover everything that needs attention. I just rebuilt both my front and rear hubs (cleaned and greased) and took like 2 hours cause the cassette would not come off. Anyways, what I really like is you keep it real. You fix what needs fixing and the rest is "good enough for who it's for" and kudos for being able to hash out a living for doing this thing that you do

I like linear breaks, especially when it comes to working on them but hydraulic disks can be savage when it comes to stopping power. Biggest draw back for me is they can be very fiddly, if everything isn't perfect you get annoying rubs, like you say, with v breaks you just take an Allen key and screwdriver and you've sorted any annoying rubbing in a minute or two

V brakes stop better than a lot of cheap mechanical disc sure, but not better than hydraulic discs. But that's ok! Because I do agree with your general sentiment that most regular folks only need a v brake (especially on this type of bike!). And ofc you cannot beat the simplicity.

The braking power can be higher on hydraulic brakes, but they're more expensive, heavier and more complicated to install and maintain than v-brakes. But is just my opinion, don't take it personally, please. We all love bikes here 😊😊

I’ve had two hydraulic brake failures, very prone to back wheel lock ups. An absolute pain to maintain. Total overkill on a skinny wheel road bike. And there’s always the ping ping. Even the pros don’t like them

As always, love the video. Love the color of this bike. I see this bike's front fork has a mount for disc brakes. 18:30 Hydraulic disc brakes may be a PITA to maintain (I don't think so) but they blow any rim brake away in pretty much every other way as far as a brake is concerned such as stopping power and modulation. Not trying to convert you or change the way you do anything, just my opinion.

Agreed on your pricing, $399 is excellent pricing for a serviced good quality bike that will more than outlast anyone's needs. Big box bikes won't be anywhere near as reliable and new bike shop bikes are more expensive and increasingly worse specs

V brakes, caliper brakes, side pull and u brakes all stop the wheel from spinning. The advantage to disk brakes are primarily on full suspension bikes where there is a lot of flexibility on the cables whilst suspending, the hydraulics work whether the cable is flexed or not, where the friction of cables in the housing will have flexible performance. Also a reason that cable mechanical disk brakes are kinda scamish.

399?? in what world do ppl buy that shit? I can't even sell a similar bike that had all the lubing and adjusting done (basically what u did) and I can't even get 75 euro for it. No wonder it's hard to find a good reliable mechanic these days. Most noobs would buy a cheap new bike that falls apart within 3 weeks. ps: I had to deal with a perfectly good wheelset with dry bearings..couldn't find the right cones so I had to buy a complete new wheelset for an older bike so I rly need that checked whenever I buy a bike. Anyway, that's my 2 cents coming from the Netherlands. And I still wanna test this theory of it doesn't matter spraying braking surfaces..cuz i'm 99% sure it would matter to me..especially with wheelies/stoppies or simply fat joes going downhill

Nearly the price of a brand new Trek fx1... but i'm not judgng. True that even new bikes need adjusting/retightening, let alone the tolerancs on a new wheel..... A bike that stood still long, is a bike where the bearings are dry, and riding it is asking to pit the cone and cups. Always a good idea to check the hubs by pushing axle in and turning.
