it could do so much more.

I’ve owned one of these for years now. I agree with most of your points and many of the comments. If I owned a landscaping company, I would not recommend this type of edger because of the simple fact that it takes too long edge. It will give you a beautiful edge, but time we all know that time equals money in business. I won’t allow my wife to mow the front lawn because I am particular about patterns and striping, but she loves to help and she edges while I weed eat. I know for a fact that she could not control a weed eater to edge so this works perfectly for her. I’ve learned over the years that the starting problems are actually because of the terrible gas additives and the oil. I change the oil about once every month and a half or so during during the summer and add octane booster to the fuel. I flush and purge the fuel system and add a preservative for winterizing. I never use gas that’s more than a month old in any of my equipment anymore. Ever since I started changing the oil more frequently than required, our edger starts right up usually in one or two pulls. I did buy the electric starter to help it start in the past now we rarely use it. Honestly I started buying better equipment like Echo or Stihl investment continues to pay off. Thanks for a great video and commentary!

I'm in the lawn maintenance business, and I wouldn't have one of those if it was free. As you mentioned, it's another heavy item to carry around in the trailer, and another maintenance rabbit hole. It cuts a straighter edge than most people can do with a string trimmer, but it also can chip concrete or, more commonly, break sprinkler heads that are up against the walk. You're right: an attachment for the trimmer is the way to go. I have several trimmers: two with string, one with a brush cutter blade, and another that I keep the edger attachment on. Most people who cut their own grass would probably get tired of swapping the string spool out for the edger attachment every week.

I like the point you bring up about the sprinkler head. That would be a huge concern when doing a job.

On some of the larger edgers you can rotate the head 90° and use it like a brush cutter. I have a small lawn business, and I prefer using a walk behind edger. I like the Weedeater/Craftsman (made by Husqvarna) small edger, but use a bigger one also. I also use a stick attachment for going around tight curves. All in all, they're a lot easier with my bad shoulders.

I grew up using a version of one of these. We had a corner yard in a neighborhood, with sidewalk the entire way around. We did not do regular edging with a trimmer - in fact, I think we had an electric corded one most of my childhood. We would use the edger one or two times a year to do the edges. The yard was Zoysia (sp?) grass, and very thick. With my minimal edging now, I just use a trimmer, but I can see why a home owner that wants a nice edge might use one of these style machines. Or someone with a shoulder issue or physical ailment.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Жыл бұрын
that makes sense, age and or a physical ailment would make it possible to edge again.

my dad had a couple of different ones throughout the years, but never one this small. Currently it’s a 5hp Briggs& Stratton walk behind and i would rather use an edger than a string trimmer. We have so much edging against concrete that takes 1.4 hrs to complete.

Good morning! For me the only non edger use for these is as a boat anchor. Using a stick edger is so much easier than one of these. I dont think your age is even a limiting factor for stick edgers either. My neighbor is close to 80 and he still uses his echo srm2100 with a stick edger attachment to edge his driveway. Great video!

Other than space for storage, my biggest gripe with this model is the diaphragm carb. You can change the oil which requires a skinny funnel and some towels to let the oil overflow on. Basically everything you said makes them interesting. I sold mine for$40 and the guy was tickled. Going to try the silly attachments which have limitations but take up less space.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

yes you're right about the size aspect and even the carb, I still don't mind using it but I rarely do.

I worked in the lawn care business for a few years and had this style of edger on the trailer for a few of those years. They are good for long stretches of sidewalk but they are difficult to use on the curb side and take more time to set up than a handheld edger. Overall not the most time efficient although I do have on at home. Would avoid if time is money.

I like my electric edger because you can dig shallow trenches for amateur radio coax and antenna radials. It's also easier for me to edge my concrete drive, and does a neater job.

Hey I just got a 90s sears craftsmen chainsaw and the 2 cycle engine feels gummy what can I use to help get more loose it moves right now but it's been sitting for a long time
@mattfleming86
@mattfleming86 Жыл бұрын
Some 2 cycle oils can gum up after a while. Squirt a little deep creep into the carb and into the spark plug hole (while off) and let it set a week. Once you get it running, listen CAREFULLY for bearing noise... sometimes bad bearings can make one feel tight. But oil that has sit for years and years can certainly polymerize.

Exactly why I sold mine while it still halfway ran. I didn't want to have to buy any parts for such a cheap thing. But the real question is what to get that does it all? I have several of the Ryobi troybilt Craftsman generic power heads and an edger attachment. If that doesn't do the job, I selling everything and going to weed/grass herbicide.
