You’ve probably been on a road trip that changed your life. But have you been on a road trip that changed the WORLD? How about 9,000 Miles on a Norton bike, through the treacherous terrain of South America? Today on Past Gas: how did an epic road trip create the mononymous revolutionary we know simply as “Che”? Leper colonies, love affairs, and dog diarrhea all tell the story of how a boy turned into a freedom-fighting man… and then a t-shirt. You gotta hear it to believe it, babeeeee!

26:00 there are towns down there that are like Bavarian villages and speak German not Spanish. Plus like the ancestral incans speak language that isn't Spanish, as do any indigenous populations down there. So like our assumption that South America only speaks Spanish or Portuguese is slightly colonial.

The ratlines that the nazis used after the second world war to escape persecution for their crimes in Europe overwhelmingly led to South America, Argentina in particular. Most people with german heritage who moved to South America after WWII have some, let's say spicy baggage and heritage. 'According to Paul Manning, "eventually, over 10,000 former German military made it to South America along escape routes ODESSA and Deutsche Hilfsverein' I don't think they're making the assumption that people don't speak anything but Portuguese or Spanish in SA, but rather that if you speak German while living in Argentina there's a high likeliness that you had some friends in heil places.

Thanks guys love it been missing a new past gas. From your long time Canadian listener Carter. PS you guys should come up here to do a few videos we actually have a really big car community, our emissions standers are lighter, and our import laws are way better (we get cars 10 year sooner) 2000’s supra’s, Rx 7’s, JDM spec GTRs, crowns we got them all. And not to mention there is nothing better then having some fun in the snow.

It's hard to get into an episode about man who murdered homosexuals, journalists, and people who spoke out against him and the government he and Castro created. But thanks for keeping it about facts and history. Good or bad it's hard to deny the effect this road trip had on history.

I worked at a small indie movie theater and we showed 'Motorcycle Diaries', staring Gael Garcia Bernal. I watched it so many times, and definitely harbored some fantasies about riding motorcycles and changing the world as a revolutionary. Didn't know Che turned into a monster like so many other potential saints before him. You gentlemen did an excellent job, as always. I appreciate the work you put into these. I've watched all but a few of them. Hope you are able to bring back video. Your goofy mugs really bring something extra. I look forward to seeing y'all grow the team and channel(s) more!

Che was what we Argentinians call "hippie with health care". He was a douche. Idolized by people who don't know any better and teens who have a revolutionary phase (we all had it, but most people outgrow it). This was a very good podcast on a fun subject with a tricky character. Nicely done!
