It was so trippy seeing Ahsoka as an actual child during the clone wars, sometimes it’s hard to remember just how young she is in the animated shows. Seeing an actual kid play her really puts it into perspective, she was literally just a child in the middle of a war, just imagine…this little Ahsoka had to face Darth Maul.

This felt like Ahsoka realizing that Anakin always was Darth Vader, that he was always intense, he was always most comfortable in war, he always was a warrior. And she couldn’t have done anything to save him. I think she’s gotten closure seeing him redeemed. It also seems that she’s acknowledged that if there’s darkness in her master, there’s darkness in her, but that it’s not who she is, it’s not all that he was.

We also see Ahsoka lampshade how many wisecracks there were in the Clone Wars during scenes of incredible brutality and how little Anakin cares about suffering and only cares about fighting to survive. Ahsoka didn't fail Anakin, she escaped him. She also points out that fighting a war doesn't feel like the place of a Jedi (just like Mace Windu in AotC), but Anakin just sees it as another role -- one he finally feels good at.

This, exactly. If you watch the Prequels on mute, you can see that even then he was a great actor. The way he emotes with his face and body language is amazing. It's just that in those movies, every time he opened his mouth the absolute worst dialogue ever came out, and fans blamed him for that instead of George Lucas. But in the scenes where he's not actually delivering those awful lines, his acting even back then was great.
@177SCmaro
@177SCmaro 10 ай бұрын
@@SRosenberg203 Some of it might be that Hayden is, what? Around 20 years older now and has a lot more acting experience under his belt compared to filming episode 2, were he was around 19 at time which meant he was in his early 20's by episode 3. That said, I do agree with the fact that his portrayal of Anakin was largely hampered by Lucas, not helped, whom I'm told is not an "actor's director" which I take to mean Lucas isn't very good at communicating with and getting the best out of his actors. IMO George Lucas is great at world building, at coming up with general ideas and a framework and the mechanics of a story but isn't as good at things like dialogue, people interacting on an individual level. I think the reason the original trilogy worked so well was Lucas had less control over the specifics and implementations and more people around him willing to challenge him on some of his more out-there ideas.
@DaxSchaffer
@DaxSchaffer 10 ай бұрын
The fact that Hayden also had the humility to hear Matt Lanter's take on Anakin in Clone Wars and lean more into that version instead of stubbornly rejecting it just because it wasn't how he originally played the character shows that he cares more about what works best. It was surreal but deeply satisfying to hear him act and sound like Clone Wars Anakin in a way that helped merge the two now and forever more 😌

I've always felt Christensen was dealt a raw deal as a result of his "Star Wars" work. There were several subtle beats in this episode, really interesting character moments and line deliveries, where I thought, "Jesus, this dude could do so much more than he's been given the opportunity to..." Since I first saw "Attack of the Clones" in 2002 I've felt his performance was underrated. I never agreed with the chorus of online opinions claiming it's "bad". My personal theory is that viewers brought their expectations of what a "hero should be" into it, which does not jive with the bratty, petulant _character_ that is young Anakin. Anakin's a brat in that film. He's incorrigible. I think at the time it was jarring for certain viewers, and Christensen was penalized as a "bad actor" accordingly. Young Anakin in "Attack of the Clones" has to eventually become a mass murderer. It made 100% sense to me that in his youth he was moody and obnoxious. In my opinion Christensen has always delivered on the complexities of that character. The monologue about killing Sand People "like animals" is chilling. I'm glad to see him getting recognition lately for his work.

I think the flashback sequence is actually mostly about Ahsoka's worries about herself. As Baylan said, her legacy is death and war. She was trained by Anakin during a literal war, and she worries that maybe she _did_ get everything from him, as he himself says here. This culminates in her beating him in the fight and then, with obvious effort on her part, _not_ killing him. Anakin is trying to prove to her that despite all of that, she can both be his apprentice and not make the same mistakes that he did.

I am a little surprised by how many missed that this episode’s sidequest into the World Between World’s was Ahsoka’s version of Luke’s trial on Dagobah. She had to confront her own fears and free herself of doubt in order to move forward, just as Luke did. That parallel was beautifully done.

You nailed it on the head. It’s a beautiful deeper scene than what this dude is giving credit for. It goes beyond the scope of wanting to live. It’s moving on from her trauma. Plus seeing a live action of the scenes of when she was just a child fighting in a war. It makes scene that she’s so stoic so the critical of Rosario’s performance is BS. It makes scene why a 50 year who went through so much trauma would be so cut off, stubborn, and detached. It’s also why she didn’t want to train Sabine or Grogu. Dude, it’s really about her letting go of her guilt for leaving Anakin, and him becoming a most evil villain ever. She had to decide to want to live, instead of being depressed and grey. She was even on the edge of the dark side, the way she tossed Shin into the rocks. She let go of all that, and came back light. She’s even dressed in white, at peace, and smiling. I agree with everything you said… but they didn’t go with that 100%, they went with the “do you want to live” angle which wasn’t something she was ever shown struggling with in this series. I wish they had it be where Ahsoka has to kill Anakin to go back, she resists, but each flashback she gets more and more emotional until she finally overtakes him and has the blade to his throat, her eyes turn yellow, but… she doesn’t do it. She isn’t going to strike her master down in anger, despite how much he deserves it. She breaks free of the legacy of Vader’s apprentice. And THAT’S when she gets to return.

I feel like Anakin was trying to tell Ahsoka not to let the past be such a burden to her, by reminding her what that burden had done to him. She started to pick up on it, but doesn’t quite understand it yet… but you catch a glimpse of her becoming more… “alive” in her interactions with Huyang, Jacen and Hera after she recovers. But where you see this best is after she knocks on the cockpit window to get Huyang’s attention. Her smile is absolutely beaming! This is the Ahsoka we knew and loved before the Temple Bombing started her on an emotional downward spiral… and you hear it in her voice too. She had found something she had once lost within herself. I suspect Anakin will make further appearances later in the show to draw it further into the light.

She had to reconnect with her trauma. What made her hurt in the first place, and what made her decide to stay committed to the light side in the first place. It’s there, it’s just deep dive into psychological and emotional storytelling. I don’t think the execution suffered at all, it’s supposed to make you really sit on it for a minute and ask yourself what really caused her to become detached and aloof and why she needed to engage that trauma in this sequence to push her to that brush with the dark side in her duel with Anakin and still choose to stay balanced.

For some reason in my head, I thought that there was no chance we would actually get Clone Wars flashbacks in this series, but we got them, and we got a live-action Siege of Mandalore flashback, and that hit me so hard (seeing a live-action Captain Rex, even if he never took his helmet off, meant everything). That entire Clone Wars-era flashback sequeneces gave me so much emotion that very few pieces of entertainment have ever been able to do, which is why at least for me after tonight, Ahsoka for me is the best Star Wars series they've done yet. There was also a little musical cue in-between the first Clone Wars flashback (which I am fairly confident is the Battle of Teth but not 100% sure), and the Siege of Mandalore, when younger Ahsoka (who looks great by the way) is checking on one of the clones. To me at least it sounded a little bit like the track Burying The Dead, from the final episode of Clone Wars Season 7, and I heard it and I was crying on the spot. Of course this was the other episode Dave Filoni directed for this series. It's a true love letter to The Clone Wars fans, but also serves as a first step for a newer audience who hasn't seen The Clone Wars to see the relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka first-hand that us Clone Wars fan got to see over seven incredible and legendary seasons of television. What a journey. What a ride. What an episode. I'm not sure they can do anything to top this one, but we'll see what happens the next three weeks.

No man! Life and Death! Its such a simple yet used in this manner a very deep message. Baylan got in her head, in addition to the legacy of Vader, she believes that all she's accomplished is death. But Anakin reinforces what he's taught her and what he's trying to teach you, you LIVE or you DIE. What was beautiful was that Ahsoka took this statement and has been taking this statement as destruction. All she has done is lived, all she has done because of that is fight. But she misunderstood the lesson and thats why Anakin was mad. At the end she learns that exact lesson, she wants to LIVE, but living doesn't mean you have to kill, living doesn't mean you have to choose darkness and destruction, it just means you want to LIVE and you can choose what you want to do with that life. Its honestly beautiful!!! As for the sets, it reminded me of the Dagobah scenes in the strange cave luke went into, like a jedi vision or temple put into motion around her.

Yes, nailed it. Baylan alluded to this inner turmoil last episode, where he said all she understands is violence. Also Ashoka realizes that Anakin's teachings and that of the Clone Wars era Jedi was sometimes imperfect, and leaned in to chosing violence and death rather than life. It's what eventually created Vader, and she was afraid of that becoming her legacy as well.

Seemed fairly clear to me. As Mace Windu put it, “[Jedi are] keepers of the peace, not soldiers.” Ahsoka was raised as a literal child soldier. She came of age in the middle of a war. Before Obi-Wan, no Jedi had fought a Sith in 1,000 years, much less on a catwalk on Mandalore. At the age of 16, she acquired more actual combat experience than most Jedi ever did. _Ahsoka, post-puberty, is basically trauma on legs._ Her experience was so unlike that of most Jedi, and she has no frame of reference for what typical Jedi training looks like. How could she trust herself to pass the Jedi mantle onto Sabine if she didn’t even know what being a Jedi was supposed to be? All Ahsoka’s ever been is herself. She was never knighted, she never went on routine Jedi missions. She was sent straight into the fire from day one. She’s as far as we know the first Jedi to take on a non-Force-sensitive Padawan. One from a deeply martial culture of weapons and warfare. This story thread didn’t just come from thin air. In all honesty, it’s one of the most profoundly bittersweet aspects of her story that could be emphasized or explored.

I think it's important to note that Anakin kept pressing her "Fight or Die." Not Live or Die, but Fight or Die. He's really testing her as much as he is giving her a lesson. Because ultimately she passed the test by not choosing Fight or Die, but to Live. She chose the Light and rejected the Dark, as a true Jedi should. She cast off the shackles of doubt from what her master became and how she was trained and proved to herself that, despite everything, she is still a Jedi. A Jedi as a Jedi should be. Not a soldier, but a peacekeeper. A bastion of the Light.

here's my thoughts on what anakin is trying to teach her on the surface, it's that she has to fight to live the only other option is death but remember the moment he triggers her he's telling her this and little girl ahsoka turns to him after he tells her she has all of him in her and she says yes, but you're more powerful and dangerous than any of us knew and he says "is that what's bothering you." and then he becomes darth vader and attacks her she is fixated on what happened to anakin to such a degree that she's frozen in life, she's afraid to live because she's so guilt ridden. remember she was afraid to train grogu because of anakin, she's having similar issues staying commited to sabine as well what's going on is anakin is saying she has to let go of her fear of failing again, and of her fear of her apprentice turning out like anakin, and she has to let go of her guilt over anakin's choices in otherwords, she has to move on and LIVE and like any good force vision, like luke in the cave seeing himself in the vader mask, and his ultimate choice to either kill vader and become him, i believe ahsoka will be faced with a choice that this vision (or whatever it was) was trying to teach her, about not being paralyzed by what anakin became

I just hope we actually get to Thrawn and Ezra with enough time that it’s not too rushed. That’s really what I’m here for, and I bet most people are ultimately waiting for that as well. I guess we’ve already waited 30 years for live action Thrawn, but I’m sure having a hard time waiting.

I believe the point with Anakin's lesson is about her baggage with him. She's been living with nithing but trauma and baggage since she was 14, so Anakin forcing to live or die while experiencing these flashbacks with him, and the knowledge that he becomes Vader, is supposed to urge to live witout it. When he says that all he taught is with her now, I believe he is telling to live with her love of what Anakin was with her, nit the guikt of what she couldn't stop him from becoming. Idk if this made full sense, but I just tried to convey what I think it was.

I think this was a test by The Sister. Remember, she's been watching over Ahsoka for a while, and this is the first time she's been in the world between worlds for 20+ years. She had to make sure she was still who she was before, by bringing Anakin to challenge her to choose between life and death. She faced down her own responsibilities for her own actions, previously masked behind what was later done to her by the Jedi order, that both were directly related, keeping her conflicted for much of her life, faced with their own contradictions. The ending, without providing too many spoilers, was pretty much obvious. Let's just say there was an 80s song from the Flaming Sensations that'll give you a hint.

Notice the difference tho? When he’s fighting her at first with his Blue Lightsaber he’s faster, more nimble, like Duku or on Mustafar. With the red lightsaber he’s more heavy handed, more methodical like Darth Vader wearing the suit.

Cant wait to see Hera getting grilled by senators. This definitely harkens back to Legends Thrawn books when Feylya and company took Ackbar under house arrest at one moment. On the other hand, I hope Ahsoka after her experiences will be more prepared for inevitable meeting Thrawn himself, and Baylan again with possible rematch,

Ashoka is a product of the Clone War and the age of Jedi warriors. It is force Ghost Anakin who can show her the truth that she doesn't need to follow in his footsteps; instead, take what he has passed down and learn from the mistakes that resulted in the creation of Darth Vader. Ashoka realizes this, and we can even see that she does not try to forcefully find a way to get to Sebine, but instead, she takes a second to meditate and take in the surroundings, which results in her finding the best solution to the way to get to Erza and Sebine.

I think the point of the flashbacks is about trust and listening between master and padawan. She needs to listen to and trust sabine in a way that Anakin didnt listen to her. Anakin and the old jedi forced Ahsoka away, and now shes made the same mistake with sabine. Its about letting go of your doubts and trusting in people, friends and the force. And you get at the end in the visuals, that Ahsoka has let go of that dark mistrust and is letting the force finally guide her back to her padawan

Star Wars Fanatic had a great take on the meaning of the lessons during the World between worlds scene..it’s about letting go of the past. Failures, loss, etc…Ahsoka isn’t responsible for Anakin’s fall or rather (as Anakin states to her) choosing the path that leads to death. She does however have the choice to ‘live’ and accept things happen that she can change and not carry the burdens of war…etc, etc.. his channel said it more eloquently

If you think about what a memory is though, everything that you’re not immediately paying attention to kind of fades into the background, so I figured that the fog was evocative of how in the midst of battle, she was focused on her, Anakin, and the immediate surroundings

I was somewhat confused about the lesson too, but I think the point was that Ahsoka fell into hopelessness after learning of anakin's fall. She probably felt let down and afraid to trust. I think Anakin's point here was that they are more than their mistakes...

I think the critical point in the scene in the WBW was when she decided to not kill the dream version of Anakin, then you see his eyes lose the yellow dark-side corruption. Perhaps that was like her shedding her guilt over her perceived abandonment of him.

now Ahsoka has probably found meaning in fighting again, as she chose to "live" and went from a level of resentment to one of hope. And the purggirls scene at the end was a big step forward in finally bringing the viewer closer to Thrawn and Ezra. Not to mention Jacen's moments that put him in a great position to be explored in the future. The fan-service in just the right amount. Great episode!

I could go on about how much I loved Hayden in this. One thing I haven't seen discussed is the possibility that Ahsoka trains Jacen. He's wants to be a jedi, he's force sensitive, and lets be honest, I'm not sure being a jedi is the right thing for Sabine, it seems like she's mostly doing it because Ezra was a jedi and she wanted a connection to him. 10/10 episode for me. First episode of the series I've been in love with and I can't wait for more.

That’s would been pretty cool imo and dive in how her regret effected her ability to be a teacher and obtain he full potential as a force user.

There is a lot of meta level involved. Anakin says that she also inherited his traits. Through the fight she shows that she is not falling for the dark side, she briefly has yellow eyes, but by refusing to kill Anakin (like Luke) Anakin finds the light. Hence the hope. Balon said that Ahsoka only kills and destroys, this lesson made her change her mind. The dark robe is now gone as it now continues to represent the light, much like Anakin as a Force ghost. So she passed the test because she showed that she would not follow Anakin's path. She also realizes that she couldn't have stopped Vader because Vader was always inside Anakin (always those transition scenes). So she finally comes to terms with the fact that she couldn't have prevented anything and finds inner peace. Before, she always seemed to be somewhat driven and never smiled, now she does.
