I've been riding motorcycles for years. From little 2 strokes to GSXR 750's and everything in between. My eBike is way more fun, costs almost nothing to operate, doesn't smell and is quicker (at least up to about 40km/h). AND, it takes way more skill to ride (bicycles are way too light to be going +70km/h) Motorcycles have about 100 years of technology and research behind them. eBikes have about 10 and in another 10 they will totally eclipse anything motorcycles have to offer. I'm flying to Vancouver this weekend and my eBike is coming as my checked bag. Have you ever flown commercially and brought a motorcycle with you as baggage? lol, if you ride or have ridden you've got to check out some of these high powered eBikes. And trust me, once these motors are paired with gearboxes it's going to be another level of fun. Electrics are already to the point where >250cc motorcycles can easily be replaced.

Yeah but that chain had to be guarded since it's gonna grind the cogs razor sharp and when your pants get caught in it it shreds them. Derailleurs are for that guy with a 1968 Jaguar that he loves to work on: Adjusting the points and valves every month. Changing the copper spark plugs every 6 months. Derailleurs are the bronze age of cycling, the only two more primitive technologies are penny-farthings and pneumatic tires, which are still useful. I have a standard Pinion C1.2 gearbox and it's the industrial age for cycling FINALLY. No more cables to adjust, no more cogs that get sharpened by the grinding compound that chains make out of the oil and dirt mix, and with the Gates belt drive, a drivetrain that needs no maintenance for 7000+ miles. Then I bought a five speed Schwinn, because it was my own money and why spend the extra ten bucks for five more gears? But in my 50s I discovered the fun of Goodwill bikes in no-rust AZ, building them up, switching from 7 to 10 speed, improving wheels, tires, brakes, then re-selling them to the exercise generation behind me. Eventually sold my shop full of bikes to a guy who wanted a new hobby. Sadly, though I still have two nice bikes, old age caught up to me and no more 30-40 mile rides for me.

I’ve actually thought that before. It’s more common than you think. Biking in cities like New York you needed to be able to shift quickly. Unless you were riding a fixed gear. Which I didn’t.

I never understood why these ebikes had transmissions. My experience with motors is that with the right motor, you have basically infinite torque at zero speed. That's why there is no transmission in pure EV's. There is no power band. What would be much better and less complicated is a properly designed motor and controller, which takes up less space and weight than all those gears do. Set the gearing at a fixed midpoint, and choose a motor with enough balls to turn the wheels. Max speed of the motor is dependent on voltage, so if you want speed, prefer stacks of batteries in series. If you want torque, stack the batteries in parallel. If you want both, design a battery pack that can efficiently switch between series and parallel combinations of the cells. That's where this stuff should be headed. Away from gears.
@mugnuz9 ай бұрын
true. nice example of overengineering and making things worse.. but it justifies more money to some and people liking complicated techy stuff...
@Torchedini9 ай бұрын
Because in mtb land there is still a large range in torque requirements. And because big electric motors are heavy. And you still need that transmission anyway because of human power inputs. Because it isn't a motorcycle
