Note, Some cars batteries are NOT VISIBLE, but there is a Pos leed that comes from the battery that will have a RED plastic tag lid on it, it will have a fair size leed and a bolt thru it, I know Dodge Avengers 2010 are like this and others. The battery is under the fender up front .. Good Greif!

I have jumped hundreds of vehicles and this is not true the alternator has a built in voltage regulator and will not fight the other alternator, look it up only one alternator will charge and it will be the one with the least resistance.
@SpenceStan888
@SpenceStan888 5 жыл бұрын
@@kkmart43 I'm guessing the 2 alternators could theoretically combine voltages and cause a voltage spike to sensitive equipment. The alternators do not put out solid Volts, but a rectified AC waveform. Combining 2 alternators, from 2 engines would combine the wave-forms could and create random voltage spikes and transients in the electrical systems. the alternators themselves won't be hurt, but advanced/sensitive electronics on newer cars is what I think Scotty was referring too. The potential risk makes sense to me, just haven't considered it before. Simply after jump-starting the car, disconnect the jumper cables and not keep them both charging the 'dead car' to mitigate the risk.
@richardgates7479
@richardgates7479 5 жыл бұрын
I would always unhook the cables as soon as the car started up, never had any issues. Never have both vehicles running with the cables hooked up. If the car doesn't keep running then you're not getting very far anyway. If you didn't just leave your lights on or something then 10 minutes isn't going to do much, the battery needs to charge overnight and the charging system checked. And anyone else notice how expensive car batteries have become?

Hey Scotty, You forgot one important safety warning about jumper cables. Before hooking up both positive and negative cables to the good car, make sure the clamps are not touching on the other end! Else you will short-circuit your battery and possible explosion! That's why all jumper cable instructions say to hook up positive on both ends first, then negatives. This make short-circuit impossible. I know most people don't read instructions! Thanks for the entertaining videos!

Brett Downing I think that was the best compliment I’ve seen in here! I am an older, single female. I get taken advantage of by mechanics when I am in the SF Bay Area, away from a mechanic I’ve known in my hometown for years. Even he used to take advantage until I began to look problems up and listen to Scotty! He knows better than to tangle with me now! He tells his underlings, “Treat Kitty right, because her claws come out if you don’t! And take it from m one who knows from experience, she is not going to leave you with any possible way to defend yourself when she’s through! And that’s on a good day!” I actually tend to look at the inner workings of a car like the anatomy/physiology of a human, and being a retired Nurse, I find that to be easier than trying to memorize an entire Chiltons Manual!

Good video, thanks Scotty. You probably saved people a lot of heartache with this video. I myself at 63 y/o used to do a lot of those things you mentioned, i.e., remove the negative cable to determine if the alternator was working. If a person isn't actively working in the mechanic world, it's easy to miss some of these points. Appreciate you and your videos.

a simple test is headlights, if they dim when idling, either your battery is failing or alternator bushes. With the newer cars, batteries only last around 3 years. Huge power draws running computers and all the electronic gear. Some jump cables have a voltage regulator on them, as soon as the car starts, disconnect

@@liamgeorgie2024 It's not really a good idea to jump a car from a running car. The alternator is not designed to output the hundreds of amps needed to start an engine. That's the battery's job. You shouldn't leave the engine running unless you're worried it won't start and you'll have two dead cars.

Back in the mid 80's I worked for a company that had a Dodge pick up as the off site yard goat. The company expected 100k miles out of it when they bought it so they were going to get 100k miles out of it logic be damned. About 5000 miles before it would have been sold for scrap the transmission went out of it so they put a brand new $5-7000 tranny (and some other repairs) in a truck that was worth about $500.

Where do you live where you can get a car that runs and drives even semi-reliably for $500? Here in in Nebraska, it seems like $2000-2500 is the starting point for used cars that runs and drives, and doesn’t immediately need major repairs.

That two alternators explanation makes no sense. The voltage you see across the battery should be DC. The only problem I can imagine is if the donor car has a weak battery too and the recipient car's starting attempts to draw very high currents from the donor car's alternator.

That actually makes sense. You need the battery only, what's the point of having donor running, battery is alive anyways. And when dead car starts drawing current from running donor, voltage may fluctuate and cause damage in running electronics, because voltage is dependent on current being drawn. So just keep donor not running and keep it safe.
