This is Bonnie's song! I thought Teddy Swims was overdone. "I close my eyes then I won't see the love you don't feel when you're holding me" So glad you're listening to it! This is my favorite performance of Bonnie's of this song - from a 2 vol album called Road Tested. Listen to more of the album please! Feelin' of Fallin' is also grat! A worthwhile rabbit hole. She doesn't get enough coverage! For fun also see her duets with John Lee Hooker.

Her rendition has the world-weariness of a person with experience that's wanting love but finally giving up with a person that won't return it. I think her experience in the blues field is what gives this much more of a punch than George Michael's version which is beautifully sung but lacks that weariness.

Teddy's was overdone. He and George Michael only did it BECAUSE Bonnie did such an incredible job of showing just how beautiful this song really is. Made sense to try to capitalize on such an iconic song, because of it's following from Bonnie.

Interesting story. Mike Reid and Alan Shamblin were both country music songwriters, who according to some accounts originally wrote the song as a fast, bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo considerably, they realized the song gained considerable power and thought about giving the song to one of three artists: Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler or Linda Ronstadt. Eventually, the song made its way to Bonnie Raitt, who recorded the track for her eleventh studio album, Luck of the Draw (1991). Raitt co-produced the song with Don Was, while Bruce Hornsby provided a piano accompaniment

Bonnie was the first to record this beautiful ballad for her 11th album in '91.Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'". Btw Bruce H playing on this was the icing on the cake and what a flavor.

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” is the third song on Bonnie Raitt’s Grammy-winning album from 1991, Luck of the Draw. The song, written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, sat on the Billboard Hot 100 for 20 weeks, peaking at No. 18. The words are sung from the perspective of someone experiencing unrequited, one-sided love, and it has inspired heartbreaking covers by Adele, Bon Iver, George Michael, Prince, and many others. According to co-songwriter Mike Reid, the idea for the song came to him after he read an article in a Nashville newspaper about a man on trial for shooting up his girlfriend’s car while he was drunk. The judge asked why he had done it, and the man responded with, “I learned, Your Honor, that you can’t make a woman love you if she don’t.” The phrase stuck with Reid and ended up serving as the inspiration for the song’s chorus. Always a lovely, emotional version by Bonnie. And Bruce Hornsby playing piano is always the icing on the cake. Those two together are Magic. Bruce is the reason (after seeing him in concert), I took up piano.

In the late 80s-early 90s, I was working at Toronto's CFMT-TV, which had been known as MTV prior to the American music station's debut. I was killing time during my shift one day and caught an interview on City-TV with red-headed slide guitarist Ellen McIlwaine, who opined that God must've thought the type was a good idea because he made two. Ellen lived in the Beaches neighbourhood at the time, but passed in Winnipeg, I think, a few years ago. They also played her new video, inspired by a show on multi-cultural station, Channel 47, CFMT. I brought it to the attention of the producers of said show, but they declined to follow up. Ellen was highly thought of, under the radar, a great talent who'd jammed with Jimi Hendrix, always a singular and easy claim to fame to latch onto for the press and non-cognoscenti like me. Rest In Peace, Ellen, Flame On, Bonnie. I met Shirley Eikhardt ('Something to Talk About') briefly in '86 when she came into the resto I was working in at that time to chat with the manager. The owner also had a club on King St. at the time where Shirley performed one or more times, and our manager had met her there.
