Today is the first in a two-part series on BORDERLAND, examining the MS13 gang and the massive crackdown taking place in El Salvador. This week, we talk with Alex Papadovassilakis and Steven Dudley of the organization InSight Crime, to talk about efforts to clear the country of gang violence, the 70,000 people who’ve been arrested, and the mega prisons that are housing them. Next week, we do a deep dive into the origins of the notorious street gang and how they differ from Mexican cartels.
Borderland is an IRONCLAD Original.

As a Salvadoran, I find it pretty funny how these pundits are so quick to criticize and place little emphasis on just how much the quality of life has improved for the citizens of El Salvador. The critique is fair, but to let the critique overshadow the massive win for innocent citizens is very naive.

I wonder what endgame is for the gang affiliates. Will they be released? If not, liquidate?

@@Reality_C... the way to change this is to have these MS-13 members be their neighbors for a year... we'll see if they still think these gangsters deserve to be treated like normal members of society

I have family in El Salvador. My Tia is selling tortas and small appetizers at the park freely. She seems happy about the round up of gang members. People are in peace right now. Those criminals don’t deserve rights. Seeing the country now it paints a picture.

It works; PERIOD. Where do these two live? Obviously not in El Salvador. Jail is the consequence punishment for your bad actions; its not supposed to be a joyful getaway. Those animals, (the gang members), never cared for their dismembered victims and the emotional damage their relatives still endure to these days. The Hell with them.

I grew up in a dangerous city in Commiefornia. Gangs ruined a beautiful historic place. They had little excuse for bieing extremely violent. Preaching love for family, hood, ect., but went out and murdered migrant field workers mirror image of their parents and grand parents. America does not need to do such extreme measures, all we need is to enforce the pile of repetitious laws already written, Obey our Constitution. This potato government has violated every major law, in a very biased and injust way. But decriminalising crimes goes way back, as leftist polititians coddle criminals, a generation has grown up with little consequence.

I feel for the ones that had no ties but are in there, there's a interview with people that are saying their sons or family are arrested and have zero ties to the gang they don't even have tattoos but were arrested

A friend of mine went down to El Salvador on vacation and was detained for 3 days because he had tattoos on his arm. He even made the newspapers which stated he is a member of MS13. Btw he works in information technology in Los Angeles

Apparently the people of El Salvador are happy with the situation . This is a democracy isnt it ? Well thats the way a democravy works. The majority rules. As long as the people are happy with the policy their democracy is working .

Guys from v18 or MS13 didn't take the gangs as an idea or as an idea to start in El Salvador. It started because guys were getting deported back to El S. In the case of 18st it was a guy who was born there but had no ties to the country but found fellow gang members and servived by creating the 18st gang in EL S.

Due to President Bugele, the Salvadorean people were just released from the worst of prisons. We, as humans, should care about the people, not the thugs. May the thugs rest in hell.

I find it interesting that the “expert”on the topic isn’t even Salvadorian but a foreigner. That makes no sense. It would make more sense to speak to someone who lived through the gang violence and the changes that Bukele has implemented. This report is definitely biased.

Another “state of energy”Implementing an Authoritarian military/police state under the guise of fighting violent gangs and Cartels. Allow all crimes to flourish and chaos to spread like a wild fire so when they bring their solutions to fix their manufactured crisis the people will enthusiastically applaud

If you incarcerate that many people, im sure everyone else still free will say they are happy. To stay free. C'mon. You arent stupid. Drastic actions are needed but due process exists for reasons.
