James Kalm had already attended the press preview at the New Whitney Museum, visited and recorded a couple of other shows in Chelsea, and was starting to lag, but… Walking into Pace Gallery, and seeing a selection of recent paintings by Thomas Nozkowski revived him. This group of untitled works features oil on linen on panel, acrylic on paper and graphite and color pencil drawings, some accompanying studies for near by works. Nozkoski is an icon of Downtown painting, and his decision decades ago to limit his scale and concentrate of pure abstraction has won him the admiration of many younger painters. This program included a musical introduction by Collin…

Tomas Nozkowski is my favorite contemporary artist now. (Next to me) This guy is a hard working Painter with one after another fantastic work of art. What I really like is he is combining completely different styles of process to one art work. He is taking two, three, great processes of color and image and having the balls and skill to overlap them. This success is bring a new dimension of changing absolutely beautiful imagery but still compressing into a confined space, a new successful beautiful understanding of pushing the envelope of art. Very nice.

the best American painter right now-craft, invention, color, beauty -no deskilling,no abject provisional slacker crap,no casualness at all- just brilliant work!

Wonderful artwork, I liked his art a lot, and I like that he's not so concerned with something huge in size.

My impression of the whole show is of a conflict between lines and color. I loved the technical side of the commentary.

I like these paintings a lot! I don't know that the huge canvases of the Abstract Expressionists were based on machismo. Actually, Italian Renaissance paintings were made on even larger canvases and I think the Abstract Expressionists wanted to have their work on a par of importance with the Renaissance- hence the canvas size. I actually don't care for all the artists who work on canvases large enough to fill an entire wall. They're obviously madly egotistical and meant for museums, a presumption on their part.

Jack Galmitz some of us make big paintings because it would be impossible to achieve true results working small. I think great art and bad art can exist in all sizes.
