Capitalist society is based upon making profits so education becomes nothing but an overhead cost to be minimized and monopolized by the ruling class. The dominate ideas of any society are those of the ruling class and in the United States that is the rich capitalist who can buy all the education they need while they invest in new machinery to replace higher paid skilled labor with machines and cheaper unskilled labor.

A great interview. Both parties. I have been a public school teacher for over 20 years and have been a teacher for 30. I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Sowell. The only exception I take with what he said is that there are some teachers like me and a couple of colleagues that work hard to go against the grain of the system. Unfortunately we get lumped in with all of the other teachers in the system. Right now teaching is frustrating because those that really want to do it are looked down upon by colleagues, lambasted by parents, and unsupported by administration and statewide evaluations. However every time I hear Dr. Sowell speak, I am encouraged to keep trying. Thank you

As a conservative educator in higher education of some twenty years in a bastion of liberalism, Los Angeles, I couldn't agree with Sowell more thoroughly. Because of the inefficiencies of colleges to provide the necessary education needed in a technologically advanced society, one that is rife with change and complexity, nothing could be more detrimental to our education system than today's anti-educator. For twenty years, I have been teaching my students the inefficiencies of education as well as essentials in achievement, ethics, critical thinking, and economics to hopefully provide them with some of the tools (knowledge, attitudes, and skills) required to give them a chance at living a productive and fruitful life at work, home, and in the community at large. I have been in public education for 27 years in Texas teaching mathematics, and it is every bit as bad as Dr. Sowell describes in 2022, only heightened. I started my education in Italy, but half way through my fifth class, I told the teacher that I was leaving to join our father in East Africa, and he made a remark that puzzled me, "Why am I losing my best students?", and seeing my puzzled expression, he said that also XXXX was going to join his father in Australia. The teacher had pinned a big drawing of Mt. Everest besides the blackboard, with columns that each had the student's name in the base, and he showed me the position at that moment of the two that were leaving. He used this chart to push others in what is possible with dedication. After any of his presentations, he used to ask if anyone was not sure of having understood, and he would dedicate time to explain, until the "student" said that he the understood. My favorite subject was geography at the time, for obvious reasons! In East Africa, not knowing English, I had to wait for six months before being allowed to join second grade, and the teacher put me next to a young girl who said she would help me. So from end September 1949, till end 1951, I completed up to sixth grade, and written also my entrance examination to high school, that was accepted. Here too the teachers had the attitude of imparting education at the level of the students, and would help even after lessons if someone had problems.

I have friends with PhDs who can't get a regular teaching position at a university, as those jobs are held by throngs of older scholars with tenure. Take a look around & see all the lawyers we have. We have so many lawyers, many of them work as journalists, LEOs, and of course politicians. And still we tell children that they must plan to go to college, that college is one's only option for success. Some of us are not qualified for our every ambition, nor even willing to follow whatever procedures would be required to attain them, so we, each of us, must choose our best fit. There should be Ph.D after Sowell's name as one of the alumni of valedictorian historians and professors of what once was the American Republic according to the Constitutional insight and foresight of the Founders who like Sowell intimately studied human history from the perspectives of those in ancient times as a admonition for our knowledge and understanding today.

"The public school is very good at blaming the parent", should have been worded differently. It should've read, "the public school is very good at blaming the parent for NOT doing the things at home that support the child's transition into a school setting." Being intellectual is not the same thing as being smart. I know many "intelligent" people who lack "wisdom". And it is THAT wisdom that enables an individual the ability to operate their intellect fully. The idea of "harnessing your power and using it for good". He adds, "the parents and the public have been pushing the schools to have more academic material". It's very easy to see how someone on the "outside" can develop an opinion about what would make a school better on the "inside". But the perspective of the people who LIVE on the "inside" is a completely different advantage.

Some ARE better than others. Private schools do not have to report their success ratio or test scores, so they get away with a lot of hiding. In my area, I know from my own experience the local high school is equal in its outcomes for bright students as the private Catholic schools in the area...what IS different is the student body, so the 'avg' that go to high-end schools is lower in the public high school, but when adjusted for parental income level, the highschool there is no noticeable difference and they have far more students than the private schools.

I have been reading many of the books of Dr. Sowell, whenever I hear the nonsense that surrounds us, especially the present class of those that are supposed to be governing our countries. I thought it was purely a problem of party affiliations, but on return to Europe after 41 years away, and had to vote for the first time, I asked my cousins to guide me on the choices. One asked me what I would like in whoever would represent me, they all laughed at my reply, and puzzled as I was , the other one simply said I should not vote, as that type of candidate does not exist. The third cousin explained that politicians end up choosing that line, because they are incompetent in anything else, but must only have the gift of the gab and a straight face.

Zero money is an issue, but as a parent who home schooled with nominal money and tattered books , my children who subsequently went to high school, ended up in the 90% range at the top. One daughter ended up leaving high school with a 2 year college degree. It’s discipline and “ want to.”

The part with "people like me shouldn't be in ballet" is golden - the culminating point of people who just did not listen carefully to what Professor Sowell was saying up to that point. We are educated to think so highly of ourselves. I'm in Romania and I can see this Western trend of exaggerating our perceived self-worth being picked up by people who don't pay much attention and think they are brighter than they really are and they are so loud they'll cover everyone. If you contradict them, they'll come up with stuff like "you're misogynistic" or "because of people like you, people have low self esteem and don't achieve much" and other stuff like that. Also, I am shocked that this trend began in American schools in 1993 when I can see the recording says this show was held.

Since this interview government’s from around the world have stopped teaching cursive in the classroom. Around 2010 they took it out, fast forward to 2024 and California and Ontario are bringing it back. And I quote, “ A lot of historical documents going back two or three decades are actually in cursive, Students need to be able to read them”.

Have you heard this before from students who had obtained very good results in examinations when you asked them what they had learned the previous year, their reply is 'I have given all back to the teachers what they had taught me'? It seems they study for exam sake rather than for accummulation or attainment of knowledge. This is a great discouragement for teachers.
