Here I review and install the Chassis Unlimited Thorax Bed Rack onto a Diamondback bed cover on a 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma. I also show how to uninstall and install a new Diamondback Bed Cover.

Was really hoping to see the cover open up with the rack installed to see the clearance.

Uptop Overland has one that still allows you to open the bed cover.

Thank you for this! It's very helpful, as I was looking for a more detailed breakdown of this on a Tacoma. Is this the 12" or 18" height that Chassis Unlimited offers?

You’re welcome! This is the 12” rack.

Thank you for this awesome video, I have a Diamondback SE now I kinda wish I went with the HD, I want to also put a Thorax and I know the options are 12” and 18” , can you tell me what the 12” or 18” measurements mean , is it 12” or 18” from the bottom of the rack to the top of the DB , or will the opening be 12” or 18”, I’m asking because I want to put a couple of Yeti 45 when I go camping and with the DB and my Bedslide it won’t clear the Yeti. TIA

Thanks for this...great video. Been looking for a example of this solution for a bit. 1 question: Did you go with the HD or SE ? Debating on if the SE could handle running a tent and a few packs on the side.

Thank you for the feedback! I would highly encourage the HD model (I’ve had two of them now including current cover). The SD is rated at 400 lbs of hauling capacity whereas the HD is 1600 lbs. By the time you put a rack and tent on you’re on average 200-300 lbs then account for a person or two and you’re likely well over the 400 lb limit.

Thanks for video. Great content. I'm wondering with that setup if it's difficult to get to your gear all the way in the back of the bed?

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I utilize a “walking stick” that I can reach into to pull out my totes, cooler, chairs, etc. It works very well for pushing items in the back and taking them out. The rest I can reach by hand. I went this route for weather protection and security. Highly recommend it!

Thanks for your video! I’m curious if you’re able to remove remove the diamondback panels with the rack on?
@tacojeepadventures
@tacojeepadventures Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! To take the panels off the cover, they need to fold up About 90* to slide out. This rack won’t allow for that. You’d have to remove the whole cover as one piece. Other options are Yakima and front runner if you want to be able to leave the rack fully mounted to remove the panels and or have both sides of the cover open at the same time.

Thanks for a great video. Useful. Love the Diamondback. And intrigued by your new rack on top of it. A question though, a bit of a tangent. I see you have a rack on top of the cab. I've seen crossbars as well as cage type racks above pickup cabs, but I've never seen popup tents above the pickup cabs. Do you know, could a cross bar or other type of rack system above a pickup cab, I'm considering one of the F150's, but could a cab roof support a pop up tent, say a iKamper 3 mini or say a Roofnest Sparrow2, both closed while driving, but also stationary and open with one or two adults sleeping in it? Assuming it could be done without killing the average mpg, I'd much prefer a pop up tent above the cab so as to have maximum use of the Diamondback cover, being able to open both ends. Any idea, any thought? Thanks.

Thanks for your comment and feedback! I have seen many trucks run roof racks with “roof top tents” such as an ikamper mini 3 - so likely an ok approach although you may get some drag and wind noise. I prefer it over the bed personally and another option if you want to consider this route (I have a detailed video on how I did it on this channel) is by installing a winch / pulley system in your garage to remove / install the tent when in use or not in use. This allows me to use the diamondback cover (I can open one side at a time) as intended. It’s also nice to not carry around the extra weight of the tent. Hope this helps!

Can you open the diamondback? Want to still run a toolbox up front

You can open one half of the diamondback at a time. They just won’t both open at the same time.

how is the rack holding up with the diamond back? Are you having to tighten the bolts a lot?
@tacojeepadventures

The rack has been SOLID! It utilizes large carriage bolts with washers and lock nuts. It isn’t going to budge!

Thanks! I’m really really happy with this setup! It’s STOUT, secure, etc. I want to make sure I’m answering your question appropriately. Are you referring to the rack system or the diamondback cover? My bed is weather tight. The DB covers are AWESOME for that!

Hi any reason why you replaced the older diamond back? I’m assuming they gave you a deal you couldn’t resist.lol Second I’m looking at this rack and the Uptop rack what’s your opinion? 😊
@tacojeepadventures
@tacojeepadventures Жыл бұрын
Hi there! The frontrunner system required drilling into the diamond back cover whereas the uptop and thorax systems do not - these utilize the factory cleat holes. If you want something really low profile front runner or billy bars are probably your best bet. Billy bars go under the cover which folks say doesn’t cause leaks but I’m not particularly a fan of that idea personally. The uptop and thorax are far more modular for mounting of various gear than the front runner is. I wanted more space under the rack and more mounting capabilities. Hope that helps! 👊🏻

Would you have been able to mount the thorax system on the old diamondback removing the front runner load bars leaving just the rails behind? Does it fit? Want to switch racks but don’t want to buy a new diamondback ..thanks for any advice !
@tacojeepadventures
@tacojeepadventures Жыл бұрын
@@charliewillkom Hey Charlie, unfortunately not, my friend. I know that’s a tough one..These things aren’t cheap especially to go changing up things. I think the UpTop option would even interfere with how the front runner rails are. You’d have to be way inside away from the edge to clear it. Wish I had better feedback for ya!

It’s on a hinge with shocks and opens up to about a 45 degree angle.

What’s the pros and cons 18 vs 12 inch height. Can I install the 18 inch on my 2023 Tacoma Trd 6ft2in bed, until I get the Diamondback HD, by reversing the “feet” (the ones that fit into the cleats? Thx
