Let it be a lesson for everyone. What you put in your mouth, is what comes out in your thoughts. The remainder of Lionel's career is 100% based on his swim. If he takes a few months away during the off season and goes through a self imposed "two a day" program with a great swim coach based largely on form, he will win big stuff again and re--create himself as a force to be reckoned with. If he doesn't, it will be more of this as he drifts off into the twilight over the next few years before retirement as a "come from behind Top 5 guy." It really depends on what he wants to do. As long as he continues to put anything less than 100% focus onto his swimming and form over a dedicated, non-distracted period of time, he will always be relegated to talking about his bike watts, run times and sub-par (for him) performances. I think I speak for the entire community when I say "WE ALL WISH HE WOULD TAKE THE TIME AND DO IT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!"

No one will like your comment; probably because there's so much truth in it. 🤔 I've always seen how Lionel is not consistent enough (and he himself have said this before.) Being a champion requires perfect consistency. Who, in their right mind, would change their aero position (by dropping 10mm) before a race, without testing? It's great that Lionel says it was a mistake, but at this point in his career, he should not be making mistakes. No mistakes or missteps with nutrition. It's endearing that he likes to eat pizza, sure.. just another way he's relatable to the common folk. That's what his fans like about him. But, does he want a big KZfaq channel with passionate fans, or does he want to be the boring athlete with major wins and championships? No mistakes with the bike. No changing position right before a race! Professional riders and triathletes spend so much time perfecting their position; they'd never think of switching it up like he did. And what should be frustrating is that Lionel KNOWS all of this! He knows he needs more consistency. He needs to be a machine. The consistency needs to become mundane and boring. If he wants to be the 70.3 champ, and/or become consistently successful at the full Ironman, he needs to do the things that he (apparently) doesn't like to do. In my humble opinion, the most important part of the swim (competition and training) is consistency. Each stroke, each breath, each training session. Especially for triathletes with a weak link in the swim: they have to be boringly consistent. How can he know that the swim has always been his weak link, yet he never seems to focus on it enough in training?? 🤔

Water is 800 times more dense than air. You can't just try harder in swimming to go faster. Takes time and focus. Do 2 a days this winter with an age group swim team and the results will come. (in my humble opinion)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Lionel, learn how to swim. The whole triathlon community wants this for you. Your bike is amazing, your run is amazing but you swim like stiff cardboard. No reach, no glide, more like a paddle steamer unfortunately. You would be unstoppable. It honestly hurts to watch you continue to swim like this. You have no excuse to not go and get proper swim coaching. If you don’t, it will be the one thing you will look back on in your career as your biggest regret. PLEASE WE ARE BEGGING YOU!

I hate to be critical but it’s a B level 70.3. But it is confirming for him as he very likely had a serious podium shot in Lahti and this race hints at that. Now it’s obvious to me the majority of the Europeans are juicing their blood so I’m comfortable with the clean athletes winning in NA and setting the real honest standards of this sport. Not the corrupt Europeans and their blood doping and PEDs along with their corrupt referring decisions against non-Europeans in both the 70.3 and 140.6 world champs. Lionel Sanders. Bradley Weiss, Braden Currie the list goes on, if you are racing in Europe and in the top ten of a race, the CORRUPT referees will find or make up any penalty they can to ruin your chances. Typical of that area and those countries. Annoying they are turning triathlon into the dirty sport of cycling. I hope you’re ashamed Euro Scum.

Lionel's my favourite youtuber, but you can't help feel he needs more direction to achieve the very highest level which he is more than capable of but. I can't imagine Jan would pull a spacer out because it's more agressive or would avoid aero testing for so long and certainly wouldn't race so much, recovery is king, so many of these type of "things" over the years. Lionel... Jan needs a job, you need a coach/consultant who you believe in... you see where I'm going...

9:00 - ‘front pack swimming is mechanics’ - ok … to quote Lionel back at Lionel (from his KZfaq video of 18 months ago detailing how he came a better swimmer later in life - which i think was the last in his ‘stop sucking at swimming series’ - swimming fast isn’t just good-perfect form, ie. mechanics - its largely about the ‘feel for the water’, and frankly the water ‘feels’ different when one is swimming at 1:10/100M pace than it does at 1:25 pace. Lionel needs to swim fast in training (at least once a week) to race fast. This is different from ‘threshold’ or ‘hard’ swimming. Also, open water ‘swim craft’ plays an incredible part as well, especially for someone who is naturally a weaker swimmer in the pool. Tower26 should be able to correct both aspects by 70.3 worlds in Taupo provided Lionel sticks with the plan for once.
