In today's video we are looking at the starting procedure for the Beaver's venerable Pratt and Whitney R-985 radial engine. Our simulation of the Beaver includes a realistic engine priming and starting sequence to really make the engine feel alive!
The Beaver is now available on the X-Plane.org store:

Check out our other planes: the Quest Kodiak and Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter, both of which are available at X-Plane.org:

Indeed. I've managed to land on the runway every time, however, I've never ended up stopped on the runway once. Lol.

Great explanation of the engine start procedure! Now I don't have to keep trying to start the engine, with no result. Clearing the overprime is a top tip. BTW - this aircraft is worth it just for the engine and sound alone. All that's missing is the smell!

Can you make a video of how to operate the camera? So that I can make a pre-flight check around the aircraft and also have these images inside the cockpit as you show them! I just ordered X-plane 12!

I love the DHC-2 probably my favourite plane of all time. I've been using the soul made one for years and its amazing but I don't have any doubts that your version will be superior enough over it to warrent a purchase especially after the awesome job you guys did with the Porter. I am wondering something though. I know in real life its standard practice on a cold start (or even starting in general a lot of times) to crank the engine over with the mags off for a few revolutions (4 count) to get some fuel in the cylinders and then flick the mags on as the engine is cranking. Its something I do in the sim as well. IRL the plane will start without doing it, it just stumbles a bit more. Im curious how the code in this plane handles that if you start it that way and how much of a difference it makes. Other than that the start up procedure was 100% familiar to to me. Either way Im looking forward to this getting released and keep up the good work. Im a Bush guy and lately you've been a god send.

I couldn't see the campfire in the background, so I thought the plane was on fire... 😂

Very interesting. Thank you for the tutorial. Have you thought about making a tutorial on the three different levers (throttle, propeller and mixture) and how do you recommend to set the levers for take off, climbing cruise and descent? Sorry it is is already done. Thanks.

That engine sounds just great. This has become my top plane just ahead of the Panthera and the Lancair. By the way, where is the OAT gauge located?

Hello. Im having some trouble. I can't seem to get the little arrow that allows you to open the menu to get out of my face in VR. It stays right in front and moves when I turn my head... It is supposed to be on the wind screen to the left, but stays right in front of my face and moves when I turn my head. Help!!!

The difference between cold start and hot start - is there a difference in procedure or engine performance, or is it just that you have to wait for the started engine to warm before using?

Generally yes; the temperature of the engine determines how easy it will be to start and how much priming it will need. For a cold start where the engine is at a normal ambient temperature, the procedure is to apply 3 to 4 primer strokes. If the engine is still hot (more than maybe 60 degrees C) you probably won't need any priming. The pop-up can be used to get an indication of how much priming will be needed.

Typical - KZfaq bombards me with Thranda Porter videos until I submit and buy the thing (it's excellent!) and now it switches to the Beaver... What manner of sales witchcraft is employed here?!
