That barrel is too thin to thread! I've heard that said multiple times, and I've even said it myself. So what do you do when you want to put a suppressor on your sporter rifle, and don't have enough "meat" on your barrel? I'll cover that in this story!

Gavin, Excellent smithing work! I'm jealous of your lathe. Mine runs 70 rpm minimum so, at my age and reaction time, I now thread left to right so I have no worries about crashing into the shoulder. It's a great technique that makes threading 100% stress free.

Exactly what I am planning to do to my "toy" 22LR. much easier in my case as the barrel seems to be parallel (hopefully with the "hole" in the center) and there is enough "meat" do turn a shoulder straight on. But in case I need a bigger diameter shoulder, will copy your idea!

So thankful I found this!! Also subbed! I have a remmy 30.06 that has the tapered barrel, and had some previous Smith work done to the barrel end.. ported and crowned. I've always wondered if threads could be cut back behind the porting, and basically turning that portion of the barrel into a fixed brake so to speak.
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 Жыл бұрын
Not such a good idea. If that ported job is a good one leave it be. Buy another rifle that's threaded. You would be further ahead selling what you have or trading it in for threaded if you want it. Crazy idea. But hey there are people threading barrels by hand what am I to say any idea is crazy. It's just crazy to me. I like another excuse to buy another rifle.

I would have suggested a M15x1 Thread that is 12mm (about 1/2”) long. Also I would use an overbarrel suppressor to get the center of gravity further back. Barrel would be thick enough and suppressors are availiable in that threat.

Gavin, with the thin barrel profile, it would be interesting to see if the POI shift is caused barrel droop due to the weight of the suppressor. You could clamp the action in a mill vice and use a dial indicator on the muzzle end of the barrel to examine the position with and without the suppressor.

Would this work for a situation where the suppressor requires a muzzle device? For instance a suppressor that uses a taper or dual taper locking system where a flash hider, compensator, or brake is threaded to the shoulder and shimmed if necessary for timing. I'm only asking because I've got a .270 Win Savage Model 111 with a side magazine release and sporter barrel.

I have an Elite iron for my 375. Like this situation however, it is also a sporter barrel and thus not enough shoulder to support for this suppressor (5/8 × 24). With a larger bore, would this method still work? I purchases the suppressor from Silencer Central and supposedly they will thread the rifle for $100 as part of the purchase. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am a 28 year USMC & Army Vet (send me the jokes later). I just started hunting last year and I am using my Dad's old 1969 model year, Remington 700 .300 Win Mag Stainless Steel. I put a scope on it, it only has maybe 200 rounds thru it in it's life. I have my first suppressor, an Omega 300. SilencerCo uses a system for quick connect/disconnect by putting their ASR/brake on permanently and then the suppressor is quick on and off as needed. SilencerCo has a 9/16" threaded ASR that I would like to mount to the .300 Win Mag so I can use the suppressor sometimes. Some people have told me that might be too thin with all the pressures from a suppressor. What is your opinion? Will there be enough of a shoulder to mount securely and be safe with a suppressor?

I am looking to have the barrel threaded on a Winchester Super grade 30-06. Unfortunately the diameter at the end of the barrel is 0.5995”, which can’t be threaded to 5/8-24. What is the right way to tackle this? Is it better to go with smaller threads or some sort of adapter? My end goal is to be able to use my Dead Air Nomad 30 can. Hi Gavin, many gunsmiths unscrew the barrel from the action in order to mount it in the lathe. The does make sense but what if the barrel is pressed into the action? I have a Steyr SSG P2 which I bought new and I'd like to thread the end of the barrel to mount a muzzle brake. Can the bare action and barrel still be mounted in the chuck properly for the threading process?
@floridagunrat1625
@floridagunrat1625 10 ай бұрын
Yep, there are multiple ways to set up a barreled action when you're unable to disassemble it. Typically, it is done between centers with an action mandrel, or it is set up with a steady rest. Any competent machinist or real gunsmith with a suitable lathe and tooling setup can do this.

Interesting here in the uk probably about 95% of sporters are threaded and moderated and I've never seen one with a added thicker shoulder. Some have spigots. Usual thread is 15x1, 14x1 or 1/2 unf / unef. But most are now over barrel so a bigger shoulder would probably hinder that.

Europeans use a M14x1 thread mostly. 5/8-24 is more aking to M15 wich is not as common. But thread size is secondary to the look of the threading in relation to barrel diameter. No-one wants a M14 thread on a thick varmint barrel. My cz 457 MTR has a 1/2-20 thread and it looks stupid.

Why lock tite? Is it not removed with heat? Rocksett is a better option. High temp rated, can only be removed by a soak in very hot water.

Red locktite is pretty good with heat- I’m not even sure it’s needed in this case with it tightened down like that.

Red locktite will only degrade at over 360f so there's little to no danger that the barrel is going to get that hot unless you've got a torch on it.

Just use a smaller thread supressor. All this is not needed at all. 9/16 or even 1/2x20 will work just fine. Here in NZ most sporters are M14 or 9/16 even the very skinny howa lightweight barrel has a 1/2 x20 thread from factory here. If you really want to use a big thread supressor then just make an adapter bushing

Yeah I was scratching my head a bit on this one, maybe suppressors are only available in the US with that thread. Seemed like a huge amount of extra work that wasn’t needed

Why didn’t you guys go with an over barrel suppressor?

It's going to Africa, I think the cans it will be used for is already at the hunting lodge. Also it's alot harder to form 1 a can now so it's not as easy as it was to make a over barrel can
