The Three Body Problem is the first book in a series of science fiction books called the Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Cixin Liu. The Three Body Problem was originally published in Chinese in 2008 and was republished in English in 2014. The Following Books, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End were also translated and published in English in the two year following the English publication of the first. In This video I will attempt to explain the series in under five minutes with minimal spoilers!

I still think the scariest sci-fi I read, and the one I strongly suspect Cixin Liu cribbed his dark forrest idea from (Even the metaphor of the dark forest seems to strongly hint at Pelegrino's "Central park after dark". The idea that alien aggression isn't about hate or anger, but a simple calculus of "Kill the other fellow before that fellow kills you" rational self interest, is chilling and the novel posits that a game theory reading of the fermi paradox suggests that BECAUSE the universe is silent it means that it means if aliens , *any* aliens, ever detect us, we are pretty much dead, and we'd do well to behave the same towards them. "“Imagine yourself taking a stroll through Manhattan, somewhere north of 68th street, deep inside Central Park, late at night. It would be nice to meet someone friendly, but you know that the park is dangerous at night. That's when the monsters come out. There's always a strong undercurrent of drug dealings, muggings, and occasional homicides. It is not easy to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. They dress alike, and the weapons are concealed. The only difference is intent, and you can't read minds. Stay in the dark long enough and you may hear an occasional distance shriek or blunder across a body. How do you survive the night? The last thing you want to do is shout, "I'm here!" The next to last thing you want to do is reply to someone who shouts, "I'm a friend!" What you would like to do is find a policeman, or get out of the park. But you don't want to make noise or move towards a light where you might be spotted, and it is difficult to find either a policeman or your way out without making yourself known. Your safest option is to hunker down and wait for daylight, then safely walk out. There are, of course, a few obvious differences between Central Park and the universe. There is no policeman. There is no way out. And the night never ends.” ― Charles Pellegrino, The Killing Star

See, this is the problem I have with the dark forest analogy: the fact that there is no policeman, there is no way out, and the night never ends changes the dynamic in ways I think most people gloss over. It means that hunkering down IS A POOR STRATEGY. Why? Because it *guarantees* one of two outcomes: (1) you are eventually found by a dangerous entity, even if it takes millions of years, or (2) you die. Not necessarily of old age, or even running out of resources because you can't really move, but eventually, even just due to mishap (that's why if we were immortal it is calculated that the estimated lifespan of humans would be only 1000 years; being healthy doesn't save you if your brakes go out and you get decapitated in an auto accident.) So even if it looks like simply hunkering down quietly--forever--might be the optimal strategy, if you want to avoid BOTH of those options,, you MUST do something else. You need to figure out a better option, and realistically, I think too many people are just enthralled with the horror of the idea to have spent much time contemplating alternative options..

It basically states that meaning will constantly upgrade in scale. The freeing of the individual might just be a step towards a larger reuinuon of human meaning. From racial disputes to planetary disputes, to solar to galactical. There is always a reason to learn more, expand in consciousness and to fight for our survival, as we evolve the threats will become larger and harder to deal with, we constantly need better stories and better motives and goals, there is no time to be nihilists, if we want to survive thenthe only path is infinite expansion... @@r3fus32d13 it's great you have taken this away from reading this series & thinking about the themes & possibilities of our universe The capacity for variety & novelty & mutation & the interactions of nature, nurture, technology & societal power structure pressures all points to continuing conflict & competition for resources & wealth & power over others. This already extends to other species & planet earth itself. Surely future struggles against alien intelligence will occur & the life cycles of survival continue to expand Maybe at some point a cleansing of sorts occurs with the intention simply more power to the elite & less resistance & autonomy to the oppressed Or do the elite simply genetically engineer themselves towards enhanced intelligence, physical attributes & extended life with consciousness then uploaded or transferred to an eternal domain or network linked to suns & energy sources of the universe Modern techno Buddhism for the masses & only the elite evolve at the edge of the envelope Or do robots take the place of worker bee humans? There is hope, but there is always potential for destruction, torture, death & despair, it's simply the nature of the energy systems of our universe. Create compete,, consume, destroy, recycle, recreating endless cycles of life & death with varying levels of energy, sophistication & consciousness Survival demands creation & destruction & perpetual renewal & refreshing of energy cycles Nihilism is perhaps best viewed as a starting point when seeing beyond the many pyramid structures that aim to keep us mostly silent, obedient & somewhat shackled Everything on Earth will die at some point as far as we know - once the sun begins to die & expand & engulf the Earth In the meantime people can indulge in nihilism & escapism & hedonism or religion or addiction or whatever it is that gives them hope or respite or aligns with their values, purpose & whatever gives meaning to their life, from farmer & family member to disabled & aspiring dictators - almost anything goes in this crazy universe

I discovered your channel long ago when you started the dune videos. Been watching your videos ever since. I've stayed away from your Three Body Problem videos because I have the books now and just started reading the first (I'm about a 1/4 in the first one) and didn't want to be spoiled. I'm glad I watched this one though so it gives me at least a little idea of what's in store for me. I'm a big sci-fi fan (I refuse to call it speculative fiction, I'm 51 and old school), and I can't get enough space opera, especially Peter Hamilton's Commonwealth series. I'm so glad you have made videos on his books, his stories are just so chock full of ideas and future cultures. I'm also glad that you have paid a little homage to Larry Niven in another video, who was my favorite author of the 70s, with Ringworld being my favorite of his, and that you talked a little about him being a huge influence on so many modern sci-fi authors. I love Asimov, even met him when I was a teenager when my dad took me to NYC in the early 80s, but to me authors like Niven were the Bob Dylan's of sci-fi, whereas Asimov was Elvis. Sure Elvis might have brought rock-'n'-roll to popularity, but rock got serious when Dylan and the like came into the scene. Same thing with Niven, sci-fi became, for a lack of a better word, adult. Anyways, just wanted to throw that out there, and to give thanks to introducing me to Liu Cixin. Keep up the good work, yours is one of my favorite channels on KZfaq.

Based on your vids I’m now reading these books. Whoa they are something! The insight especially in the first chapters really sets the stage for the very Chinese view and reactions- very enjoyable to read and understand.

I think, this is an excellent video. That was some really good explanation. I really loved the three body books and it really got me into reading sci-fi books.

Great review of the books. I appreciate the "no spoilers" aspect. I'd read the books years ago, and am passing along your review to others because I lack a good way to explain the books so that others may know whether they would like them. You've done just that. Thank you!

I must disagree with you here. Although in the title of this video it does say ALMOST no spoilers, at 1:30 the narrator confirms the existence of the alien civilization! As someone who has not read the books and was watching the Chinese series, I enjoyed the suspense and ambiguity of possible "first contact" up until that point. I consider this revelation (in this video) a MAJOR spoiler.

I got a (relatively, in retrospect) touch of what you described feeling in 3BP when I first read _The Forge of God_ by Greg Bear. Humans dealing with something so completely out of their league that it boggles the mind and sends a chill down your spine. I loved Forge. It's a great alien invasion/disaster story. I think its sequel, _Anvil of Stars,_ sounds like what you described happening later on, with humans trying to strike back/outsmart the aliens. I highly recommend these two books if you want to read some great late-80s/early-90s sci-fi. Be prepared to have your heart ripped out of your chest by the first book, though. It's a tough one emotionally. The second book is really different, too. They are a two book series, but couldn't be more different. Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about the 3BP books! Peace! 😎🤘☮️

Your videos on this series have been great. I love discovering great works through your channel. Just got Three Body Problem on Audible today(you should try to get a sponsorship with them I'm sure a lot of people buy books based on your amazing coverage) and eventually gonna work my way back to Hyperion and Foundation. Been following you since the Game of Thrones days. Great to see you still going. Keep up the awesome work my friend.
