Funny story for you, John. At the start of my CCW journey I stuffed my brand new SIG P238 (.380 cal.) into a "Sticky" holster. Then I stuffed it into the 6 o'clock position, inside my belt. It was so comfortable that I forgot about it. As you warned what could happen, I went to the toilet, and the gun and holster both hit the water before my butt touched the cold seat!!! Lesson learned. Ha! Ha! Ha! (Thankfully, this happened at home.) John, I give praise to God for your ministry. He has truly blessed you with wisdom and the passion to share it with us. Chuck

Yeah that’s just a bit too much danger though to get a point across. Maybe if he loaded it with EMPTY rounds. By that I mean rounds with no powder! There is something to be said about comfort being important though. If it's uncomfortable to carry then you're more likely to make an excuse to not carry "oh I'm just taking out the trash" the BAM pitbull running straight for you. I would argue that comfort and concealability is just as important as covering the trigger guard and retention but comfort and concealment are going to be determined on your situation alone while retention amd covering the trigger guard are pretty universal.

Yesterday morning in my office I go in my pocket and pullout my holster and I notice it does not fully cover the trigger area I noticed that my finger can go in Without much effort. Besides that once I live in a state that I am legally allowed to carry I will be sure to reference back to this video before I purchase another's holster. Get a good holster! :)
@justcallmejay81706 жыл бұрын
Couple rules i go by. 1 never have a holster that is made of a fabric including leather. They expand where items can get into it like a coin which could get by the trigger. 2 it has to be a hardened plastic, carbon fiber or whatever kind of harded material you see fit. Last it has to be made specifically for that firearm. I know it cost more but I'd rather spend extra for a fitted holster that won't allow room for items to slip into it with your gun then to pay alot extra for medical bills or with your life because of an accidental discharge. Take it how you want.
@phillhuddleston94456 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I have a leather holster that was made for my specific model pistol that fits tight enough that if something were to get into it, it would also get into a plastic or carbon fiber holster. It is very thick leather and is still very stiff after using it for about fourteen years though not every day until a couple years ago.

i have recently started making holsters. i love all of the points that you have covered in this video as all of my holsters conform to these ideals. its one of the reasons why i started making my own. one more thing you should consider is also covering the mag release so that it can not be actuated. i feel like having your mag fall out of your pistol would be a horrible thing to have happen because you bumped into your counter leaving you house hours before. especially for that 10-15% of people that don't carry with one in the pipe. id love to make and send you a holster with your logo and have you give me a fair shake down one day! i love what your doing keep it up!

And since all shooting sports have the same holster requirements as John, this means many holster manufacturers have NEVER SHOT IN A SHOOTING SPORT IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE! This is pretty sad. Your three points as to a holster qualifying for an EDC are doubly critical for those desiring to carry a 1911 platform auto. THE key safety feature for such a gun ( my own sub compact Sig P938 ) is having a strap that securely positions between the cocked & locked hammer and the firing pin. Excellent presentation.
@Gunrunner2236 жыл бұрын
As a holster designer and builder, I agree that the trigger must always be covered completely, and you must be able to access. BUT, in a DEDICATED POCKET HOLSTER, you want the gun a bit loose so as the holster stays in the pocket on the draw! A snap retention, you will yank holster and all when drawing the gun in a defensive situation. That would be a fail! I'm not a big fan of pocket carry unless, there's NO other way, or for a last ditch back up. But good videos bro

I think your opinions are usually very practical but in this case I have to disagree on the completely covered trigger guard. Obviously I agree the trigger guard should be mostly covered, but I don't think the little tiny gap in the back has any practical difference. I can't see a plausible scenario in which that actually creates a safety issue or a malfunction. If you happen to have video that shows an issue related to that type of holster I'd love to see it, I'm always open to the idea I might be wrong if proven otherwise.

Good job, as usual, John. I just bought a newly patented inside-the-pocket holster. It's called the "Bora II Eagle". It is very minimalist, but it fulfills your three characteristics for acceptability, I believe. I use it on my Glock 19 (9mm) and it allows me to have the firearm with me pretty much everywhere I go. It is fairly comfortable, very well concealed, and very easily accessed. Would love to hear your take on it. Every friend I've shown it to has loved it and said they wanted to buy it.
@ASPextra6 жыл бұрын
I would be interested to see it.
@gbenother87556 жыл бұрын
I have carried a BORAII Eagle for a year. it was fine at first, but it is non adjustable Tyvek, and is now falling. Inside the pocket, it is letting go of the gun at the farthest forward point , and rotating around the trigger guard. That has threr serious ramifications: A) it exposes the trigger, B) it rotates the hook to the bottom of the magazine, making it ineffectual, and C).it activates the magazine release on my LCP. When i contacted BORAII about these problems, they immediately sent me a new one that is a different design. This one grips the gun so firmly that the hook no longer operates, and will not release without a huge force. I'll be replacing this with whatever I can find that is similar except with adjustable tension.

I did the same thing with my belly band style holster for my Glock 43. The version I have has a sewn in compartment for the "trigger guard" but is stretchy and I thought dangerous. So I got a kydex trigger guard and the lanyard is looped through the retention strap and belt loop (if what I am wearing has a loop within proximity otherwise just the retention strap loop). It isn't my primary carry, but it is suitable when I use it and safer now.

I just watched this video because I've been looking for a decent belly band holster, but had not found one that protected the trigger. My worry is having an accidental discharge after flopping into a seat, or having the seatbelt receiver catch the trigger. I agree with most of what your saying except for pocket holsters and belly bands . Granted the fabric based uncle mikes it’s possible to depress the trigger with you finger from the outside and I rule those out. However the wallet style are leather cover the trigger and still allow an easy draw. The kydex ones with great retention I don’t like as they slow an already slow draw even more. The way they release is IMO a gimmick hook that may or may not work based on pants. Dress slacks they fail. Big pockets they fail. Belly bands or the crotch carry bands it’s still possible to depress the trigger if the fabric bunch’s up Since they are often worn at the gym or exercise it’s important to be aware. I noted it while cycling it could be possible. What I did was cut a piece of thin plastic cut to fit and drilled a few holes where the firearm sits and sewed it in place. That prevents any chance of it happening.

Horribly uncomfortable, difficult to get proper retention, and very annoying to put on. I bought a kydex holster from "we the people" and it works great. It has a very stiff clip that hooks under your belt. Great retention, the trigger guard is entirely enclosed, and it's comfortable to wear even being a rigid kydex holster. I can sit down in my car and it's almost unnoticeable. Less is more when it comes to holsters.

This is a good vid, challenges what many use to carry and for good reason. I would highly recommend always wearing a belt when you go out in public. Not only does it secure pants and firearm, but it can be used for other tasks in a pinch, especially if you always carry a knife.

What about holsters that covers trigger guard and straps around the back of gun , but if not strapped fall out no shake. Finally if forceful can pull trigger but it is difficult.

I know of many gun owners walking around with those 19 dollar holsters because they think the more expensive ones are too expensive or they are just plain long cheap which explains why their thinking of training is lacking also but they love to brag that they have that custom firearm or the Kimber // OH well 😄😄

My favorite kydex holster maker is Gabe at The Armory: get-asp.com/ksgarmory and if you use coupon ASP2019 you get 10% off. (I make nothing) Next is Jon Hauptman of PHLster: www.phlsterholsters.com/ (use coupon code ASP10 for a 10% discount at checkout; again, I make nothing) Third is Keepers Concealment: keepersconcealment.com/ Next is Dark Star Gear: darkstargear.com/ use coupon code ASP10 to save 10% (I make nothing) Also check out Henry Holsters: www.henryholsters.com/ If you want leather, Milt Sparks is amazing: www.miltsparks.com/

The belly band got me thinking you should do a video on holsters for women. I supervise investigators who must dress professionally. My predecessor bought Blackhawk Serpa's, which are ridiculous even for men.

Taking into account the materials of a holster is also important. I'd implore any member of law enforcement to get a kydex holster. Reason being: While soft materials like leather are more comfortable, they collapse on themselves after you draw. Kydex doesn't do that, so let's say you have to reholster to go hands on with a suspect you'll be able to. I highly recommend Safariland retention holsters for any LEO, that's my top recommendation.
@ASPextra6 жыл бұрын
I love kydex. That said, a quality leather holster won't collapse when you draw the gun.

hey john, can you elaborate on why the trigger guard being completely covered is such a huge deal? i understand the trigger being covered, and if the material is strong enough to prevent anything to get to the trigger why would that still be a fail? if i am not conveying it well enough, assume that first galco holster you showed had solid rigid leather, why would it still be a fail?
@ASPextra4 жыл бұрын
Because stuff can still get in there and impinge the trigger.

Hello, I have an M&P Smith and Wesson .380 ACP, being a right handed female I can not find a real concealable holster that I can wear over the weapon. I need to find something that would work while I lift and carry items and it be seen. Most are in the pants and unless I want to buy a whole new wardrobe they don't work. CAN YOU HELP?

In every area of life most of us would say the problem is folks not using a piece of gear as intended. I say that goes for some of the holsters you say are fails, too. If used as directed, products like sticky holsters and uncle Mike pocket holsters are safe, cheap, and comfortable. Using your belt, pocket, clothing, and always being aware of your weapons condition are key.
@ASPextra Жыл бұрын
No, they need to meet the requirements.
@preacherbeeman3437 Жыл бұрын
@@ASPextra your requirements, not "the requirements." Your requirements are fine, but they are not the end all and be all that everybody must adhere to. There are respected "gun people" who use some of the holsters you say are not up to the standard. Yours isn't the only opinion that matters, though your opinion is educated and appreciated.

Welcome to my space. Here, they are "the requirements." I know too many "gun people" who know nothing about defensive firearms use to trust "gun people" or their opinion. Name a name and we can talk about whether their opinion is qualified.

@@ASPextra Hickock45, for one, has reviewed such pocket holsters and speaks of using them at times. Of course, what does he know? I'm not interested in getting into an argument with you. I shouldn't have to. You put your opinion out in the public square, and your response to corrections or criticisms that were given in a respectful manner, could have been less dismissive. Honestly, your response seems full of arrogance and pride. You put a pistol in a holster, then turn the holster upside down and shake. Big surprise that the weapon falls out. The holster was never designed to be used in such a manner. In that case, the holster doesn't fail. You fail. This isn't your world. It's the real world. Such holsters have been used for a combination of who knows how many hundreds of thousands or millions of hours by countless people who carry with them every day. How many of those instances of carry end up in accidental discharge? I don't know, but you might. A great response to my criticism might have been four you to cite such numbers in support of your opinion. How many times have pistols fallen out of kydex holsters that weren't properly adjusted? I've seen at least one instance of that happening in a video posted online. This whole conversation is ridiculous. "Welcome to my space." Really? Your tone has probably ruined it for me. Not that you care. It's a shame, because I really do think you have a ton of excellent content to share and learn from. I do apologize for having a different perspective and sharing it in "your space." I wasn't trying to say I was smarter than you.

My cheap alien-wear $30 hybrid passes all these tests, even when it is not on me (no pressure). I watched his anti-hybrid video and I just don't get it. On mine I actually had to install a slightly larger set of spacers because the retention was too tight to be able to quickly draw. Even with the largest spacers the firearm won't drop out of the holster unless I shake the crap out of it. And if it is on my person, the added pressure of my body against the leather makes it even tighter. Oh well. To each their own. I love the channel. Good pointers. I am looking for an OWB now and will certainly be looking for his three metrics regardless of my disagreement over hybrids. Now that I think of it, it might be that in my particular case the firearm is why my hybrid works well. I have a Beretta APX and those aggressive deep serrations on the entire length of the slide make it pretty damn secure no matter what holster I use, even my cheap leather Galco (in my box of shame now). By the way: LOVING the APX. Sweet trigger, nice soft recoil, eats everything I throw at it, great mag design, super efficient grip that always seems to plant my hand nice and high... I was going to get a PPQ as my next gun, but ended up loving the APX more. The PPQ is still sweet (mainly the trigger and grip curve are absolutely perfect) and if I had the mullah I would own both. One thing that made the APX better was the reduced size of the slide release (I have big long fingers that tend to interfere with longer larger slide releases).

Thanks for this video. I'm new to firearms, and this is one thing that has bothered me. I'm not new to safety though, and if you've ever seen any of the "Final Destination" series, there is a malevolent force in that movie that is always looking for an opening, and I try to treat safety like I am working against this force. As to holsters, I always imagine that force is using something to try to work in and get to the trigger of my pistol while it's in the holster. There are several youtube videos of people shooting themselves while holstering (or while holstered), so I know that something like this is not uncommon. I got an urban carry holster, and while it conceals well, its bothered me that if I really tried, I could probably work the trigger while the gun is holstered. I found a minimalist trigger holster for my gun, and I've attached the lanyard to the clip on the urban carry - similar to what you showed in the video. I have a lot more piece of mind now, because I can keep it in I know that the gun is absolutely not going to go off accidentally no matter what I do. The lanyard pulls off as I remove the gun from the holster (with just a slight tug), so I can safely carry with a round in the chamber and I know I'm not going to have a really bad day with it.
