Three Days of Hoof Trimming Sheep.
The last step in preparing the next lambing group due in December! After shearing, we hoof trim and give a very important vaccination that protects the lambs from Clostridial disease as the ewe transfers her immunity to her lambs through her milk.
The job is pretty stress-free, but we often get those ewes who 'think' they're stuck in the trim chute and take a lot of persuasion to exit the machine. Of course, we found one in this group.
Three days was a big pull. Glad to have had Carissa around for some extra help (and company!)

Question:
What are some of your biggest frustrations or maybe humorous moments when working with livestock?

I like the way the ewes just head right into the chutes, no waiting around for any instructions. Which must mean they don't associate their nearly daily line up with anything bad. Says a lot about how you treat them. You don't even to need to give them dog biscuits!

Because our sheep live outside, we have to do tick, fleas and lice dunk. My funniest story is this while running the wethers thru their 'bath' I had one very stubborn castrated male jump the maze fence. They were all in the barn thank god, but he ran my britches off. I finally cornered him with the help of one dogs and got crook on his neck. As we were walking back to the dunk tank, he decided it was ok. But he took me into the water too. Guess I won't have lice, ticks and fleas for awhile.

Buying a sheep spinner changed our lives! Turning jobs that we dreaded into just another job to do! A handling system is essential if you’re going to treat your animals right and keep them healthy. The tossing around of sheep and hoisting them into a sitting position between your legs is fine when they weigh 60lbs but once they hit the 360lb mark it’s a different story! Our handling system added another 15 years to our sheeping lives! Looking at your system I think we bought the same setup! It works great but I had to do bit of welding to make it ME friendly! I’m kind of particular about the way I like to do stuff. I found that pregnancy/nursing feed cycle causes rapid growth in hooves so we trim the preg ladies right before breeding and after weaning. The rest get once per year. Many will say more often but it does not bother the sheep.

I love sheep that refuse to walk in water, my last 2 show lambs refused to walk through it just jumped over it, which turns out is good for muscle because there isn't much to do about the muscles in their backs but when they jump the muscles engage so since there was a constant water puddle I would just jump them back and forth a few times every time we walked past. We lost our last ewe october 2010 and man I sure miss my sheep.. you are so gentle with your ewes and I absolutely love that you leave little tails on them instead of chopping off the whole tail. Hi Sandi We use air powered nippers as they take the work out of trimming feet. If you tried them you would never use the hand powered ones again. They are available in the US and you can find on the internet. I’ve had mine for years and bought a another so two workers could trim at the same time. This makes it way faster. The bad news is they cost close to a grand In U.S. dollars but you’ve got 2000 feet to do it saves your hands and cuts the time in half.

I think Premiere 1 Supply’s has them in one of their catalogs but other companies also have the very same item so check the prices for the best deal. You will be surprised at the control that you have over the cutting blades. We have 36,000 feet to do once a year and it’s dry where we are and they are very hard. Yours are probably softer but still I think they are worth the investment.

Nice Creelman Cow Vet hat. Gotta love that family. Someone needs to invent an electric hoof trimmer that's nail strength heavy duty.

Yes! Honestly. Although now it only takes me about 13 more per sheep...but when I first started trimming it took me 3 hours to do two ewes that needed their hooves trimmed.

Maybe that stuck ewe just needed a tight hug really baaaad? 😁 I wonder how boney-backed goats would handle being in a squeeze-flip chute like that - other than scream like a banshee the entire time? It sure would make trimming their feet a lot easier; but I would need hearing protection for the screaming. Goats can be weird that way. I do wish there was a small squeeze-flip chute like that for cats: it could have saved me from getting wounded by my herd of 15+ cats over the years.
