Having a look at some of my single action revolvers...the Ruger 44's! Getting a feel for the differences between the New Model and the Old Model, and making up our mind on a "project gun". The gun in question is a 1960 made Ruger Super Blackhawk. We look it over, take it out and shoot it, and make a decision about whether to refinish it or not.

I also agree with you it does give it Character . However This is how I look at it I would refinish it Build it The Way I would like it and Then Anywhere I Put On it we'll give it character from my use and Then when I pass it Down to my son he can say my dad gave it this Is character

Fine collection of Ruger single action revolvers ! I too am a fan of the Ruger single actions ! My first was in 1964 and I carried it for 50 years ! I added the Old Army to my collection and being that I had casted bullets all my life it was easy casting round lead balls , very accurate and always black powder either FFF or FFFF! I use the Kieth style 170 grain bullet in my .357 ! In my .44’s it’s always been the Keith 255 grain ! In 2018 I tried the 310 grain hard cast WNFP with great success on the target ( when I’m in Bear country that’s what I carry in it ) The 255 grain Keith is an excellent bullet too for Bear loaded with 20.2 grains of 2400 !

Man, I just sealed the deal on two Ruger New Model Super Blackhawks that had been lying in the gun store unused and unsold since 1988. When I looked up the serial numbers it turned out they were made in 1973. Then I remembered this video and that there was supposed to be something special about the guns from that year, so I watched the video again and yeah, my revolvers do have the recessed chambers. Pretty cool. 🙂

I have a 3 screw .357 / 9mm convertible and a 3 screw single six .22/.22mag convertible. Both "unmolested" as well. Your video made me appreciate them like an old dog. For a while I was beginning to think about using them as trade in bait on a new Colt, but now I think not. Always wanted a SBH in .44, guess I'll have to start looking. Thanks!

Great video, I have a 1958 era Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag that my dad bought new. Thanks for some cool information. Dad used to carry the gun with six bullets in it , but one day after a hunting trip he was putting stuff away in the gun room and somehow the 44 fell out of the holster and landed on the hammer discharging a round that hit a concret wall and richocheted hitting dad in the back! Doctors left the bullet in due to the fact it would have caused more damage to remove it. Dad used to joke that he survived getting shot with a 44 mag!

I was lucky enough to score an old model 3-screw Super Blackhawk in 1978, made about 1969, with the Super blue, super polish. I don’t know that I would ever refinish it, but I could see why you would want to. You got a great deal on it for under $500. I also have a 3-screw Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt/.45 ACP; great guns. Thanks for sharing your beautiful collection.

Very fine video. My Blackhawk .41 mag. I purchased in 1979, so it's a New Model, and I have a New Vacquero, newer yet, and a Pietta .45 copy of the Colt SAA. I'd love to get an older .44 Blackhawk, so I could have all three magnums in Ruger Single Actions (I have a nice Taurus DA .44). But I love the four-click Pietta, and would love to find an older Ruger three-screw. Thanks for sharing yours with us, and for the well-filmed and well-edited video. Much appreciated. I suppose you’d say I destroyed my early 1964 SBH, that I bought used. It was well holster worn, especially the aluminum tube supporting the ejector rod. In the late 1970s I took a gunsmithing class at a local Community College. I filed the old crummy finish off, then used gradually,finer sandpaper for a true shiny, smooth finish. The instructor had a hot bluing rig, so in it want. It had a terribly sensitive trigger, not safe in my opinion. A few years ago, I sent it to Ruger, for the “conversation”: The rear sight and the ejector guide were replaced with new pieces. The gunsmith misunderstood the note I sent to Ruger with the gun. He thought I wanted it reblued, and called me to say the finish was too good to reblue. My refinish job passed his approval. I shot just .44 Special when it came home. It’s back home in the safe waiting…..

What he keeps referring to as an Elmer load is not a Kieth load. The Kieth load was 22 grains of 2400 not 20 grains and a 250 grain Kieth cast bullet. Skeeter Skelton preferred a load of 21 grains of 2400. And the Kieth load is not really a hot load. It produces 1250 to 1350 fps in most handguns.

It's my understanding that when they started making the new model Super Blackhawk they still had about 7500 cylinders from the old model available to them so those were the only new models that they made with the recessed cylinder. I do happen to own a 5 and a half inch and a slightly later flat top than you are showing. They only made 452 6 1/2 in super Blackhawks. They are my favorite firearm. So much so that all three of my sons were shooting my super Blackhawk by the time they were 10 with Full House loads.

The plum color on the loading gate and sometimes on the frame because even that frame is starting to show a little bit of Plum color on that 1960 gun, is caused by a little bit of malleable iron a little bit of extra iron that's in that piece of metal. At least that's my understanding but I've seen that Plum color on a lot of loading Gates and on a few frames and does it look pretty when it shows up on the frame. You might want to see if you can find some original grips for that 1960 gun. If you want to just put it up a standard set of grips if you get a set of the most latest model grips and just take out the Ruger emblem, a 44 mag case head will epoxy in there just fine. Fits like it was made for it.

Excellent video. Please humor me. I have just started purchasing collectable firearms. The newest addition being a 44 Flattop Blackhawk with a 5xx serial number. (Not as nice condition as yours) Anyhow I know modern Super Blackhawks can handle +P+ loads from manufactures such as Underwood. I am wondering if there are any restrictions in shooting hot loads in a 3 digit serial number 44 Mag or are they just as strong as the new ones. I am not new to firearms but I also know when to ask for advice. You seem like you may know a thing or two about Ruger 44s.
@RecoilTherapyChannel
@RecoilTherapyChannel 2 жыл бұрын
That flattop has a smaller grip than the SBH’s do. I’ve shot a fair number of “Elmer” loads through mine but I’ve stopped doing that. Now, the flattop gets moderate magnum level loads and the hotter stuff goes in an SBH or in my Seville. Your three digit numbered gun is probably pretty valuable so that’s another reason to go easy on it.

Yes i have to agree. Now if it was you that put the wear in it then no. Have it reblued than a pair of stag grips. Real ones are around $300.00 fake ones are around $85.00. I have the fake ones. I like them but with the Elmer loads they may slip on you. Cause thay are very smooth. Mine is a 45colt. 5.5in barrel. Shooting 45acp ball ammo or cowboy loads is a lot of fun. Using Underwood hunting ammo is like the Elmer loads and you have to watch the smoothness. It is still controllable and i won't change them but something i have experienced.

@Recoil Therapy Channel I use mine every year for whitetails, hogs and black bear and buddy that 44mag does a number on all of em. I load the 240 keith type bullets from Missouri bullet company, I got 500 for about 57.00.

I'm so sorry I molested the s*** out of mine😬🤣 I sent it off to Ruger and had them put this stupid transfer bar in but I'm an avid hunter and there's lots of bears 🐻. How do you feel about it being molested a little more by Mag na port?

I have a 1972 three screw that is was magna ported before I owned it. The recoil gate opens upon recoil and I cannot take it apart the clean its internals or try to fix the loading gate. I am considering sending it in for a transfer bar and so they can fix the loading gate. Hopefully I get luck and they Re-blue it at no cost. 😁

Was just offered a 3 screw brass frame 357 with the box for $1000. I may have to do some horse trading.

Yeah I’d be doing about whatever it takes to get one of those, provided good condition and the original box and paperwork. Watch out for yellow boxes, those are not original, the real ones are white and red.

@@RecoilTherapyChannel I’m glad you mentioned the box, it actually does have a yellow box. I wonder if someone swapped out a brass frame at some point.

Thanks for your replies. As it turns out the brass frame is meant to be on a 44 magnum based on the style of the trigger guard which I didn’t realize. The other thing I found out is that here in New Hampshire there quite a few spare brass frames around due to the close proximity to the Newport, NH factory. Needless to say for a $1000 I will pass.
