Here's the next Three-For-All lesson and this one focuses on three challenging pedal-point ideas that will surely keep your fingers busy. Pedal-point is an interesting compositional technique and has been around since the Baroque-era of classical music, which Bach and Handel frequently used in their music and compositions.
This practice has been passed down through the centuries and changes in music, which was eventually reborn with guitarists in a variety of music styles, but Yngwie Malmsteen is known for using this concept frequently in his music, so we'll borrow some of his ideas in this lesson.
These three ideas will surely give your picking and fretting hands a technical boost, not to mention finishing with a cool tapping idea to give you a unique challenge.
Give this a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

That's so awesome!!! My father is a classical guitarist and I grew up listening to and learning a lot of classical music, but one of my favorites was Bach, especially the pedal-tone sequences that he was famous for. My dad would use an open string(a la "Leyenda") or hold 1 note with a finger while he played the other notes. I can't wait to relearn and transpose some of the songs that he taught me to play on electric and blow his mind!!! He was disappointed that I switched to electric and pursued rock, but now I can show him that I can play it on an electric. That was one of his big arguments is that it's not the same or as good. That being said, he's always been very supportive and he loves the music that I write. I'm very fortunate and grateful. However, since he didn't play electric much or the style I liked, I was on my own to learn and I had to figure it out by myself. But it's all good. I still consider myself to be very lucky! Thank you David Brewster

Ex. 2 is fun as you start jockeying around substitutions over the Ddim to move from Cm to Eflat (who said Bflat on the bass?). Ex. 3 is vaguely reminiscent of Paganini's Caprice #19, while he used the _low_ G as pedal point. To me everything baroque is a real deal. I've always been in deep love with Vivaldi's way of mixing scale fragments and arpeggios to come up with outstanding beautiful flowing phrases.

I also have seen yngwie use fingering tapping in a harmonic minor fashion, he rarely uses fingering tapping but when he does in live concerts he is using his tapping finger as the harmonic minor leading tone which is the 7th degree scale and using the left hand to do the harmonic minor scale. Maybe look into this to making a "theme video" but you have to watch a lot of live converts on how he uses fingering tapping in a harmonic minor fashion. Eddie van halen and everyone else uses finger tapping in major or minor scales.

@billwilliams6338

Yes I understand what you said. But what yngwie does is when he is playing A harmonic minor and wants to pivot into E Phygian Dominant he will LINK them by using diminished arpeggios as a LINKING/Pivoting device to bridge the A harmonic minor scale with the E Phygian Dominant. What I don't understand is how he is using Diminished arpeggions as Linking/pivoting devices to bridge scales/keys/modes. Yes i have read in classic theory books that composers have used diminished arpeggios to link/pivot for modulation keys changes, this is what yngwie specializes it. Be nice in the future to maybe make a "themed video" about this.

Hi yngwie malmsteen does an arpeggio section for the song called the seventh sign. Can you please make a video explain how he does this arpeggio section in the seventh sign guitar solo. Make a whole video on a bunch of yngwie harmonic minor licks would be nice also by you since you know the theory.
@LateNightLessons

I'll add this to the list! Thanks again! There's totally more Yngwie coming in future episodes. : )
@billwilliams6338

I forgot to mention yngwie often says that he LINKS the phrygian Dominant mode with the harmonic minor by using diminished scales. I have no idea what he means how he LINKS a Phrygian dominant mode with a harmonic minor scale. E phyrigian Dominant mode gets LINKS with A harmonic minor scale by using diminished arpeggios just doesn't make sense to me but this is what yngwie often says is his bread and butter. Maybe since you know a lot about theory this LINKING technique you might be unable to explain better.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 жыл бұрын
Well, Phrygian Dominant is a mode from the harmonic minor scale and let's say the song you're playing is in A minor (for example). If you played A Harmonic minor over A minor - it would sound like A Harmonic minor. But if the chord changed from A minor to E minor and you continued to play A Harmonic minor - the sound/scale would change from A Harmonic minor to E Phrygian Dominant. As far as the diminished arpeggios Yngwie was talking about, that really comes from classical music/study, and you can blend Harmonic minor and diminished arpeggios and scales easily - you just have to understand how they relate and can connect in the music you're playing. The tonalities between the two are very similar (with that dark sinister sound) and musicians have found ways of blending them together since Bach was alive. : ) Good luck and I hope this helps!
