The 2022 Tesla Model X Plaid ($177,690 CAD as specced, $133,490 USD) is quickest SUV on the market and has the lowest drag coefficient in its class. On paper, it is nothing short of remarkable. 1020 horsepower. A claimed 0-60 time of just 2.5 seconds. 6 person seating. Over 300 miles of range. But just how does the Model X Plaid hold up in the real world as a dailyable EV with immense power? And how does it handle some spirited driving on back canyon roads? Thomas and James aim to find out! SUBSCRIBE!
Huge thanks to @joeyrogoff for making his Model X Plaid available to us

The brakes on the models S and plaid were if I’m not mistaken the same brakes as on the 5th Gen camaro ss which aren’t even adequate for that car. After owning a 500 wheel camaro ss I can tell you that for sure those brakes aren’t adequate to the point where I upgraded to the Zl1 front brakes, bigger calipers and rotors. I can’t imagine a heavier faster car with those brakes.

I loved my brakes on the 6th gen, but 5th gen was trashhhhh for brakes. I also had the Mag ride, not sure if that helps with the heavy breaking. Sure felt better though.

You're not kidding. I drove a friend's 5th gen back when I had my built 2000 f body, and the (lack of) braking scared the crap out of me. Now add a couple thousand more pounds to that same Camaro, and you have a recipe for disaster.

@@polardabear Quality has only gotten worse ?!? You are criticizing a design because it is old ?! So a design became ugly just because it is starting to get old ? "cost too much for how little you get" ?! Just say you don't like Tesla because to each their owns. No need to do the bullshit talking. Some we prefer the general performance of a model S Plaid instead of the I imagine the luxury confort and perfect fit and finish of an Eqs. Plaid offers the best 1/4 time of production cars while costing 130 000$. And with few mods you can even have fun at track and destroy some supercars. And all that in a daily car that is confortable and that you can use for your vacation with your family. For 130 000$ there is no other car that can offer that. But of course if you don't care about doing the 1/4 mile faster than a Chiron, you don't really care about canyon driving, you don't like the look or the everything on screen or you don't care about supercharging network etc. Go for the Eqs.
@prigles100

@@polardabear you gotta remember when you buy a Tesla u also buy access to their supercharging infrastructure. Teslas not only can go farther than any other electric vehicle including the EQS but also have supercharging stations almost anywhere you go. Same can't be said with the EQS and you will be having a hard time with long trips. Further more the EQS is a slouch when it comes to acceleration and handling compared to almost any tesla.

@@directlinkrexx4409 If it's not going to be used on the track, then a car's track capbilities are irrelevant. All that matters is it handles "good enough" on the road, where 99% of the time you can't safely or legally toss a car around like on a track. On the flipside, straight line performance _can_ be safely and practically used on the road to a much larger extent. I would have liked to hear comments about the ride, handling, noise and comfort, compared to the previous generation Model X. This one has a new suspension, supposedly better sound isolation, and so on (assuming those features are similar to the changes in the latest Model S vs. the previous version).

We have a Model S and Model X Raven/Perf and now have Plaids also - working on selling the Ravens. Here's a quick take: The new suspension is much tighter and sportier than before - more taut, but still comfortable. The sound isolation is definitely improved - but not quite as big a leap as you might think. But the dual pane glass and a few other changes do make it more quiet. The stereo - IMHO - is a BIG improvement. Gone are ANY loose parts that could rattle or distort the sound. Everything is beefed up to handle the full 1000 watt output. The new materials are super nice- on the Plaid you'll find metal and Alcantara where you used to see plastic trim. The new carpet is deeper and more luxurious. Everything, every material is just a step better or nice, while still being familiar.

I own both a 2019 GLS and the new X (albeit long range, but except for the tri-motor drivetrain, it's identical). I can confidently say that it is a very comfortable car, and the ride is smooth. To be more specific, I think the two have very different types of comfort: the GLS is more of a couch; it has a plush ride that feels like pillows over bumps, which does mean, however, that there is a lot more lean, pitch, dive, and roll, making it less comfortable in that regard; in other words, the X deals with the bump in a more noticeable, yet much faster way. The seats are more conventional in the GLS and seemed almost too simple at first compared to an S class, but you never get fatigued. In the X, the seats are pretty much thin marshmallows if that makes sense; not too well bolstered, but you can sink into them when sitting properly. As for sound insulation, it is quieter in the X due to a lack of engine noise, and as for wind and tire noise, maybe maybe the GLS is quieter, but we are really splitting hairs here. Keep in mind I have the smallest available wheels on both cars: 19s on the GLS and 20s on the X. I noticed that the noise cancelling feature in the X isn't really noticeable until you listen to music: the 22 speaker sound system blows the GLS's Burmester out of the water with the right EQ calibration (which I found was by lowering everything to the minimum and heightening what you wanted to be more pronounced; that way the speakers aren't forcing certain noises out; they simply inhibit what you don't want to hear as much of); the sound system in the X is closer to a pair of open back headphones than it is of a stereo; you feel the sound of each instrument; no mushy middle sound, and a lot more bass available. I can't speak about the sound insulation and the suspension compared to the old X since I've only test driven it once back in 2015, but I think comparing it to the best similarly priced 3-row luxury SUV is a good reference point. Hope this helps. Edit: after a 7-hour road trip in the X, my points still stay true, although I will accentuate that the suspension is more taught and large bumps are more pronounced than in the GLS. I tried to take notes on my lap with the computer on the seat next to me in both cars now that I have done a road trip in the X as well, and while I had no issues in the GLS when I did a road trip in that car, I did get some back fatigue in the X, and my writing was a little more sloppy. I also want to point out that the suspension was in "low" during this road trip and I should have set it to high.

@@scottstewart5784 cd is dimensionless, which makes it a bit of a "gotya" measurement in the car world. The cd of the tesla and of the prius may be the same, and yet the drag of either one could be substantially more, as you've still got to multiply cd by total frontal area to know anything useful. Most likely the Tesla has a larger frontal area, but either way the point stands.

@@VaunShiz what do you mean, misleading? I assume they normalize drag by some control speed of wind, and use finely calibrated equipment to calculate the amount of drag induced by the shape. So, logically, unless I missed something, the frontal area disparity doesn't matter? Or is the CD an interim number, and true drag is a product of the CD and the frontal area?

Never thought I'd see the day, but Tesla is becoming the Corvette to the sports car world. Phenomenal performance for a bargain, but you have to look away from the build quality. I'm glad you guys mentioned the driver's door being off, but I saw it immediately in the earlier panning shot. Door handles were off, c pillar was misaligned, non uniform stitching.

It’s like that for my 2018 X. So many panels are horribly aligned 😅 it’s quite bad. Those Falcon doors, lol what alignment? Tesla really doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the word. Passenger fender isn’t lined up too great either, and varying other issues all around the car. However, still a great car.

@@LOVE-VIBES-X-PROJECT-CARS Any other SUV you want to get that comes close in performance will either be significantly more expensive, or significantly slower in a straight line. EV SUVs that come close to this performance doesn't even exist at this point. This is also true every single car that Tesla makes. No other EV in the respective class of the Model 3, Y, and S come close in performance, range, and charging infrastructure for the price. It's at a point where even comparable gasoline cars are often times more expensive. But as the OP said, the trade off (for the customer) is the build quality is not great in comparison to its competitors, hence the comparison to the Corvette.

@@rousseau327 ...... First question is why would you be buying an SUV for performance. Second question is if you're not looking for performance and you're looking for good build quality and a simple A to B suv what makes this a bargain to say for example a Toyota 4runner or Rav4
@rousseau327
@rousseau327 2 жыл бұрын
@@LOVE-VIBES-X-PROJECT-CARS Your first question is completely doesn't make sense, because people buy performance SUVs all the time from BMW, MB, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, etc. Why would you buy an SUV for performance? Because you have kids, you like the extra space, you like the extra ride height, or maybe you just like how an SUV looks, but you also like to go faster than anyone else with a normal SUV. The fact that Lamborghini made the Urus should tell you all you need to know about demand for performance in the SUV space. These buyers could have easily purchased a mid-tier X5 or GLE, but they went with M and AMG versions of it. Just because YOU don't care for performance in an SUV, doesn't mean other buyers don't. The fact that you're even bringing the Rav4 and 4Runner into this conversation is completely idiotic. Those cars are also bargains. They even more of a bargain than the Tesla is, cause they're way cheaper, very capable, reliable, and have good build quality. That does not mean the Tesla Model X is not a good bargain as well compared to other performance SUVs you can buy. Just because the 4Runner is a bargain relative to the Model X, doesn't mean the Model X isn't a bargain relative to a more expensive SUV, such as the Urus, or a Cayenne Turbo.
