Throwing “Double Walled Thermo Cup” on the potter’s wheel @Alchemyceramic

Today’s project is a “Double Walled Thermo Cup.”
In Japan, we traditionally use a Yunomi Cup to drink Japanese Tea.
The Yunomi cup doesn’t have a handle like a mug,
so the heat of the hot tea through the cup's wall makes holding the cup difficult.
We have a particular way to hold the Yunomi with two hands, which looks elegant.
However, today I’m going to skip this elegant tea-drinking style and make a double-walled Thermo cup.
This way, I can grab the cup immediately after pouring the tea and keep the heat longer.
I use this cup every day, and I love it.
It requires a bit practice in the beginning but after few attempts it will be fun to make them!

Thank you for your question 😊. You can close while trimming. The pot shrinks a lot from wet stage to the trimming stage. At this point if I don’t have an air vent the trapped air can not go anywhere and break the wall. After trimming the pot’s shrinkage is less so I normally don’t have a problem. please dry the pot very well. Any moisture inside will give the explosion 😅. The trapped air doesn’t. The moisture does.

Thank you for your comment Goldlong😊. That is an insulation tube for water pipe. You can buy in DIY shop. I used large plastic tube as a clip to secure the place. My wheel setting is much higher than useful to avoid back pain😅 So I need to anchor my arms on the splash pan. This tube works very well.

Thank you for your comment Lisa😊. I don’t close the vent hole after drying because it doesn’t effect the bisque fire.Please make sure to dry the cup completely. The explosion is caused by moist not the air. I assume “trim hole” means the vent hole after trimming, if so this vent hole needs to be glazed to seal the air pocket. If I misunderstood your question please let me know.

@@nikkimastrud7670 Thank you for your question Nikki😊 The trapped air inside doesn’t give an explosion. The water does. You can cover the hole after trimming and bisque fire it as long as you dry the pot completely. You can cover the hole with glaze also, again you have to dry the pot completely before the firing. There is no explosion by the air.

I have a question about the holes you make, and how it works with glazing. Obviously without a hole it will explode in the kiln. Sometimes the glaze could seal the hole and cause a problem, no?

Thank you for your comment Malcolm😊. The trapped air doesn’t give an explosion. If the air pocket is wet it will explode. The pin how has to be closed completely with glaze. please check other comments we have discussed about this. so please make sure the pot is super dry for both firing and pin holes should be filled completely.

Hello! I am not a ceramicist but I have done some work with ceramics in studio classes. I was told when I was young to be careful not to leave air gaps inside the clay, as hot air expands and may cause the piece to explode in the kiln. I’m wondering how these cups do not have this issue when you fire them? Thank you!

Thank you for your comment Ren😊. I believe many people have been taught same thing. I’m not a scientist so I can’t give you a super answer. The explosion is caused by the moisture. Wet clay explode definitely. Small amount trapped air makes a swollen spot but doesn’t cause the explosion. I was discussing about this with friend who studied a science. The air expansion is under the capacity of clay and glaze movement. That is our conclusion. Maybe wrong😆. If someone can explain please join our discussion.

Additionally, you need to make sure your pot is super dry!! before firing. As I said above the moisture is the cause of explosion. The water boiling point is 100 centigrade then becomes to steam to expand in large scale.(1500 times? maybe) . Some articles said the air also can go through the clay porous ( not glaze) . There is an unglazed part on the pot always.

Near 13:40 you attach the greenware to the wheel "using skimmed clay". I've never seen that before! Would you please explain it in more detail in a future video? 🙏

Judging by what I've seen from other potters, I'm assuming they've used a bit of slip painted on the bottom of the workpiece in a ring shape. This would then dry quickly and adhere the workpiece to the wheel.

Thank you for your comment Stobber😊 Skimmed clay in this case is , I scraped the outside wall clay down with wooden tool and and push this clay down the wheel so it seals the pot’s edge to the wheel. In this video to reduce the length I didn’t include much details about trimming, but all previous videos showing how I do. I only put the water at the bottom of the pot. I think other people use soft clay. After you checked my previous videos and if you are still not sure please let me know.

Thank you for your comment Renge😊. "Crawling" in pottery glazing is a situation where the glaze doesn't attach to the clay surface and pulls away, creating bare patches or a cracking appearance. It's like when a paint or coating on a surface doesn't stick well and forms gaps or wrinkles, leaving parts uncovered. In pottery, crawling happens when the glaze contracts or pulls away from the clay while drying or during firing, leaving areas with little or no glaze coverage. if the area is large it sometimes very effective. I have large flat plate like this. but I don’t want it happen at the cup internal corner. I hope this helps.

Where do you place the vent hole after trimming? The same place as the original water drain hole, or a new one from the bottom?

Thank you for your comment Moosy😊. please make a vent hole where my original vent hole was. It was an upper part of the air pocket. During the drying process sometime the hole is closed again so please make sure you puncture it again. I often hear the air release sound. 😆 It means the hole was closed. Technically the hole can be anywhere as long as you puncture the air pocket.The glaze will cover the small hole. if you worried you can fill the hole when the cup is bone dry.

Thank you for your question😊. Only the moisture is the cause of explosion, not the air inside. As long as you dry the pot completely it doesn’t explode.

Question: You mentioned making another hole after trimming; is this just kept open while you dry the greenware to bone-dry state? do you close this hole before bisque firing? After? do you keep this hole open forever? I don't see it on your finished cups, but perhaps there is one on each cup. Thanks!

Thank you for your question.😊 Yes You need a vent while the cup are in the drying stage. The clay will shrink and the trapped air will break the clay if there is no vent hole. The first holes would be closed up while you are trimming so you need to make sure to have new vent hole. I don’t close the hole as for the firing as the size is very small and it will be close when I put the glaze on. If your glaze can not sealed the hole you better to close the hole before bisque fire. The final cup should have any hole. iIt will lose the point of thermo. I hope I explain ok.

I heard the ceramic lecturer said the air doesn’t give the explosion only moist does. The outside of the air pocket temperature is higher than the air pocket’s one. Also there is unglazed foot ring. I wish I can explain in better way. I will study more!

It is true. I fired a big sculpture that was completely closed and glazed all over. No explosion. But it was super super dry and I did a drying cycle before the firing.
