I suffered the same injury a little over a year ago. Except my break was somewhere in the middle, and the bone was peaking out. It was hell a complete nightmare. I did not think I'd be back doing the activities I loved. After lying on my back for several weeks, I slowly started walking everyday using both my crutches. I gradually got to a point where I ditched one of the crutches then eventually both. I got myself a weighted vest and started hiking. I'm back skiing and doing everything I was before, like running. The nerves around the break are still tender and the skin is drier than normal. I scoured the internet to find people who went through something similar, & found you. I saw the rehab you put yourself through and your strong spirit - it was motivating to say the least. Thanks for opening up and posting your experience.

I am really glad you mentioned the skin dryness! I had a bimalleolar fracture roller skating back in February (6 weeks pretty much today) with an internal fixation. I'm still in a boot, though I'm taking it out every day or so to try gentle exercises. I thought I was imagining it, but my foot is so dry!! I hope you are recovering well!

Thank you Zack for the video. I fractured my tib fib last yr in April and has watched your videos that motivated me a lot. After 1 yr plus, I could jog, but not too far. As the rod is so securely tightened with those screws, I could feel tension around them while jogging. Thanks for the tips and videos. Amazing

Zack, Thank you for the detailed and informative videos. I am now starting on my 5th month since my injury. My injury is what they call a Pilon Fracture, very similar to your injury and almost the exact hardware. Mine was caused by a waterski accident. Started weight bearing and walking. Still some pain but slowing getting better. Once again, thank you for the videos, I will start adding these exercises to my rehab.

Hi Zack, I'm 7 post break. Your videos and guidance with rehab were fantastic. Similar milestones to you. Just starting little jogs and this seems to be the last thing to come good. Only other thing I can recommend for everyone to assist in recovery was cycling, helped the leg recover quickly, ankle flexion and supplied blood to the reduced muscle areas. I just did cycle classes.

attacked in nyc in Dec 22', broken tib n fib as a result, titanium rod and screws followed.... 3.5 months post op currently... been riding 150/200 miles a week on the bike... signed up for my first Ironman in Sept... your old videos def helped motivate me early on so thank you... and appreciate this followup! Runnings been hard, still have some pain and a slight limp but I push through it. My advice: its all about blood flow... and with the titanium hardware youre not going to reinjure it unless you get hit by a car... so push through the pain, and do it early on. I'm 39... and plan on being 101% by summer. The stationary bike is the best tool imo.

TWICE! i did this injury 8 years ago... now ive just done it again 2 months ago... I now have 4 plates, and 20 screws... I do not recommend doing this injury twice. The second time around, your bones just dont stand a chance! I remember how long it took 8 years ago, to get anything close to normal was a stretch. Only 2 months in, and re-living all the same experiences from the first time..... I think i prefer the pain to the restless legs at night - its gonna be a long end to the year!

Yep I can walk. Def not completely normal yet as there is still pain. Certain times of the day it hurts more than others and I limp pretty bad when it does. Seems like I am a little worse off than Zack was at 6 months but not by much. Balance on the broken leg is the hardest part. I was full NWB for 13 weeks so I didn’t even start setting any weight on it until then. It’s a LONG road and I’ve definitely had ups and downs mentally.

I just broke my distal Tib&Fib in a skatepark just like you. So thankful to know the recovery process you've been through. I knew you do not want to remove the hardwares. Since I am an addicted roller skater/skier, so I am pretty worried about the hardwares might cause some pain when wearing a very tight and stiff skate/ski boot. If so, I am definitely gonna remove all of them. I am wondering if you went to the ski resort this season? How do you feel? Thanks bro.

Hi. I'm going through the same situation. Both are broke near ankle and had to have surgery that night. Question is how did your knee feel after 3 months. I'm not full weight yet while in air cast and crutch. The more I try to put weight or stand I feel like my knee is going to give out or fall forward. And that is without my boot on Just trying to stand a little bit. I just wonder if that was a common thing.

Hi Zack! Thanks for sharing. I broke my fibula just over a year ago (no surgery needed) and the ankle swelling remains. I've attempted to run a few times but the tightening of the calves and the knee pain has been unbearable. The knees have gotten worse which has limited my ability to do lunges and squats. I was runner prior to the incident (5 miles daily) so the psychology of it all has been another battle. What's been your routine (diet, exercises, etc( to get you to be able to do half marathon. My 2yr anniversary is Dec 2024.

No worries it depends on the break. While most of they may looks simillar the people recover differently. I have broken both bones down to the ankle (ankle not affected). So after 3.5 months im just starting with walking without any crutches, while some people on the second month , although breaks looks "almost" the same. My biggest impact was on the ankle dorzi flektion that prevents from doing most of the squats and so on.
