Tickety engine & a crazy idea - 1990 Kawasaki ZZR1100

Having been run up on the dyno (a lot), the engine on my 1990 Kawasaki ZZR1100 is a bit tickety, so I need to adjust the cam chain tension and reset the valve clearances to keep it running sweet. I've also been thinking about the future of the bike and may have just come up with a crazy idea for a project bike...

The decals will come off much easier with the use of a heat gun or even a hair dryer. Just don't use too much heat and damage the paint or melt the plastic. When the zx11 first came out in 1990 I thought it was fugly. I was riding a 1990 gsxr750 at the time. I bought my first zx11 in 2018 and now I really like the look by comparison to modern bikes. The classic sport bikes look much better in my opinion. It really grew on me. It has that classic nostalgia about it. Love it so much I bough two of them so when I'm maintaining one I have another to ride.

Best part is when you have the cylinder head off, I always set the valve clearances on the bench. And next time I skip that checking procedure the Haynes book says. Better just rotate the cam for each valve in order and don't mix things up

I must admit, if I change a shim I always turn it overca couple of times to bed it in, check it and be happy with it before moving on. I could save loads of time checking 8x valves in one go, swapping stuff out, turningnitnover and checking them again, but I'm not that clever 🤣😂😅
@H-M-78

@@QuickBikes I was talking some shite 😄. Last time I did the valve clearances on the Busa with the head on the bench I tighten down the cams and cam holders on in the two different positions to check 8 valves each time as you did, and then just double check the clearances later when I can turn the whole engine over - That time I did not bother with the exakt location of the cams, just the lobes 👍 It's not exactly easy to turn the cams without a cam chain with head on the bench

On some bikes where you have the bucket and shim arrangement it seems like a proper faff... ASBO is an adjustable set up which is a doddle to do 😁👍

G'day. may I just add a few comments with regard to the zzr problems what we found here in Aus 1 gearbox second gear when thrashed lets go ( dove tailing the dogs helps but slows the shift) 2 bent shifters again when used hard 3 starter chain tensioner is useless if it has a polished spot on the adjuster bar replace it 4 cam chain adjuster also useless replace that with a manual one 5 electrical most likely all this has being said before check the side stand switch the clutch switch , a problem we also found was when a bike had being stood a relay in the fuse box corroded and the loom around the steering head tended to get internal breaks. 6 needle jets and needle should be replaced a a set . dynojet used to do a kit witch work well in my part of the world 7 standard front fork springs were too weak and collapsed. front rotors tended to warp under heavy use. when it came to checking the cdi Kawasaki told us substitution was the best method despite all of the above the zzr 1100 is a good bike and well worth buying today , keep it standard and chop up a Honda or something

The ZZR1100 has always looked like a rolling soap dish. A very rorty soap dish, but a soap dish none the less. I remember it coming out, the only bloke I knew who liked the looks was the guy who had an early CBR1000F. Which I guess is unsurprising, 'cause the ZZR looks like a CBR that's been attacked with a pencil sharpener.

It seems like you are wanting to do a build with the zzr, so that’s probably what you should do. …that being said… I actually like the look of the bike and vote for selling it off when the time comes and getting something else for the project. Also, if you go the fiberglass route hackaweek did a pretty good job showing how it’s done on a motorcycle project. Andy did as well for the xs1100.

I need to have a word with Andy as I know he did the seat unit, but Basketcase didn't have a full fairing... I know it's a bit of an icon bike, but it could be much more enjoyable to ride through the twisty bits... dunno what to do really 😕 🤔

proof that the bike is getting old, drain the tank and there's always a little dribble. I'd LOVE to see that girl done up in a late 80s early 90s endurance racing style, I l9ve that boxy sort of racer look. be careful calling her a Bus it might get a chain link fairing in the night from Essex.

Evening, just wanted to share my method for removing the needle valve seat from my zzr1100 d ,I used my small blow torch to gently warm the area then used a small easy out tool (left hand thread type)just taking pressure the used vice grips to grip the end of the easy out then gently taped the grips with a hammer and hey presto out they came hope this helps

Start issues can sometimes be because of the switch in the clutch lever, try to pull it, just a tiny bit. And then id also like that there was a hole in the rear side fairing, but, how is the fairing attached in the front... 🤔😊 Next time you check the valves, you might find that you can't adjust them any more, then you can make a video of how to renew the top 😊

all those connectors are for rigidity ... one tank connector on a sport bike is like oversized front wheels on a chopper. ok maybe not ... but they really do get to the nitty gritty even as far as how the gas sloshes in it.

Glad your having fun with the ZZR Quickie even if your not a fan of its looks. Considering that when it came out it was the replacement for the ZX10 it looked quite sleek at the time, the ZX10 really was a fat chick in a skimpy frock :) On the (maybe) CDI troubles have you checked the cut out switches on the clutch lever and side stand? One of them might be on the way out. If you trust yourself never to try and start it in gear or ride off with the stand down you could bypass them.

It was definitely a handsome ride back in the day I think, it just looks a bit dated now it makes plenty of power though and sounds mega on full noise 😁👍 Yes I checked the side stand switch, the kill switch, the clutch switch as they all run back to the cdi. I'm just not happy that you can wiggle the cable as soon as it comes out of the cdi and get it to die. That and rhe fact nit doesn't meter right just makes me want to replace it 😁👍

You said you wanted to get back into track days, the ZZR is a continental crusher and in standard form would be out of it's depth doing roundy roundy racing. Don't get me wrong, you've put a lot of effort into it and a Sanctuary inspired type rebuild would be mint, but she's probably a bit long and old to be doing anything other than wobbling around a track (that might be a bit mean but she wouldn't be anywhere near competitive. It would be cheaper in cash and time to start off with a newer, better spec'd (with more scope for adjustment) as standard bike. Just another opinion, and like arseholes, everyone's got one!

There's always going to be a dribble left in the tank as we get older 😂I'd keep it as ZZR'ish as possible, the rarer they become the value will increase, maybe just invest in decent suspension if there's any about. I had a Japanese import VFR 400 NC30 in grey, black and red, was a great colour scheme I thought, maybe a take on that would help it look more attractive? If you do a search you'll see the scheme I mean, tried posting a link to a photo of my old bike but comment disappeared, probably cause of the link.

Either 3 ways: - Soldering iron and one black plastic wire tie (Clean and fileable, even sandpapered) - Superglue and Sodium Bi-Carb (Hey presto instant plastic like your coffee) - Fibreglass (Messy and time consuming for that one).
