Ticks while hiking - I saw a lot of ticks on my way to the Creux du Van

I saw between 20 and 30 ticks on my hike on the Creux du Van. The hike was nice but not as special as I expected. There were a bit too many people... and ticks for my taste. So I decided to dedicate this video to the topic: what I do about the ticks when I am hiking. The close up shots of the ticks were made in another location. In Switzerland the ticks are basically everywhere except on the high mountains. Once I saw my first tick on a blade of grass, I started to see them everywhere.

I live in Canada (Ontario) and recently found a tick on me that I think had been on me a few days. I was glad I had a tick key and was able to remove all of it and had no Lyme disease. I had a prophylactic dose of Doxycycline on hand and took it right away. But I know of two people who contracted Lyme this summer. Next summer I plan to get another emergency dose of Doxy as insurance for my outdoor adventures. It’s really worth having both the tick key and the prophylactic in a hiking first aid kit.

In my job we have 20 people in out team, and 2 have chronic Lyme, both are not aware of any thick. Horrible illness especially chronic state.

Interesting you mentioned they are there up to 2,000m. Before heading to North Carolina mountains a few weeks ago, I asked about tick potential and the local ranger said "no worries", as it was over 1,000m. Fortunately, no issues that trip 🙂

I want to go to Lucerne in October, up in the mountains and down at the lake. Should I be really concerned?

I wouldn't be concerned, rather just be aware and whenever possible I recommend not walking through a lot of undergrowth or high grass. Enjoy your trip to Lucerne.

Do I need to be careful in the city? I'm moving to Zurich and I'm a bit scared of doing so since I don't want to get bitten by infectious ticks!

In my experience you don't have to worry about them in the city. Mostly they are in the forest or in the high grass close to the forest. It's rather unlikely to find one in the city. They need enough vegetation and they don't like mown grass. Also they need to get there first.
