Waterloo Central’s Budd RDC 6148 out stretching her legs on the Waterloo Spur

This is the culmination of many months of hard work in getting one of Waterloo Central’s Budd RDC’s 6148 that had been shut down for 12 years operating again.
Once the checks were made to be sure the second engine was operating satisfactory. They fired up both engines ... performed a brake test got a clearance and then took it out on there main line for a full system test run on the Waterloo Spur. From North Waterloo Ontario to Elmira Ontario.
The car ran great with very little problems

She will be right at home on the jointed rails. I’m not gonna lie it makes me happy and sad at the same time. Sad she is gone from the island but happy you guys saved her! Way to go! You all should be so proud of your efforts.

I have great memories traveling in budd cars from brampton to guelph ontario and later on vancouver island bc

Really pleased to see 6148 at it's new home. I have good memories of travelling on the RDC runs from Toronto to Stratford, and on the Havelock Sub.

So glad to see 6148 saved. Rode in it when it was still on Vancouver Island as "The Dayliner". Have an N scale model of it that I'm detailing. And just got another N scale model that I'll number as 6133 so I can run them together as they used to run here on the island.

Rode an RDC on the Laurentian ski train from Montreal, Montreal to Ottawa on the old CP line, and another from Gaspe to Chandler, back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Also remember 9-12 unit lash ups on the Montreal Lakeshore commuter service in the early 70’s. The smoke was epic!

I counted 5 RDC's in total, wonder how many actually run. This one goes great, at least as good as when VIA had them ! And a GMD1 in the yard, will have to visit the WCR this summer. Thanks for sharing.

Love my RDC's. I use to ride one to work from Peterborough to Toronto back in the day. Neil Young's dad would get on in Cavan

Wow ! How awesome to see this running again, and locally at that. Many years ago I rode a RDC on Vancouver Island - end to end. It could have been this very car. Neat !! James.

Jointed rail, I love it. St. jacobs, birthplace of home hardware. Very nice sand cast (earlier version) K3L

It would be neat to see a former VIA Rail RDC run up and down the track of South Simcoe Railway, the York-Durham Heritage Railway or Port Stanley Terminal Railway line.

My son really likes railcars like those he thinks they are highly underrated and that they can still have their uses today. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build reproductions of these and the departments of transportation should put them to work on lightly used and abandoned lines that should be restored and used again. But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!

I wonder if any of those drivers in their vehicles or average person on the street that saw WCR's VIA Rail RDC go by thought for a moment that VIA Rail was testing RDC service in the area or why was their a VIA train running down the track?

That’s exactly what it is .... 6148 ran on the Island with 6133 and 6135 .... all three are in perseveration now

I can remember riding these Budd RDC from Edmonton to Calgary back in the 80s , great times for sure, I think my one way ticket was like 12 or 13 dollars, at the time.

Yes .... Nathan K3LA .....they came off Budds from Moncton when they were scrapped ... the Nathan AirChime K5 LA’s were long gone

This type engine control monitor system was put in only 6 Budd cars by IRSI of Moncton NB .... the control system is made by Schneider Automation .... Via Rail had the cars upgraded to the new control system sometime between 1999-2001 .... this included all of the Victoria cars (except 6133) and the Sudbury cars
