For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this is information is useful.

Great way you choose to show the differences in many different ways. Good job! I think I would settle on the 1/8 for a few reasons, it doesn’t wash out as much it has better contrast also you don’t loose too much clarity on the face and I’m sure it will be a lot easier for the camera to auto focus compared to the 1/4, especially in low light.

@@nVuFilms I researched this for 9 hours today...hovering over click on the 1/4 in my cart...and you saved me from making what I know know was the wrong choice. 1/8 makes so much more sense for those who can only get 1 at the moment. I think when it comes to people you may want to blur and soften the image, however when it comes to subjects such as cars, food, jewellry things like that is when the sharpness comes into gd use.

Thank you for the comparison! I plan on using one of these filters for film photography at night and this helped me to decide upon the 1/4 filter. I think its going to add some nice spice to the lighting having the bloom spread into shadowed areas with neon signs and gas stations.

Great review. I have both and would say the 1/4 is the way to go if you are running a matte box. It keeps those flares down whenever you are using a flag so the highlights aren’t too distracting and you get that smooth look. It also depends on the camera you shoot as well. From a high contrast camera like the GH5S I prefer the 1/4 but the BMPCC4k I use the 1/8 or none.

I bought a 2 stop tiffen nd filter and paired it with a sigma vintage lens and was blown away. So I ordered the tiffen soft fx nd filter to slap on the sigma 30mm 1.4 bc I like the cinematic feel that I get from my Sony a6300, although I have received it yet.
