@Jonontoast yet he dominated every opponent in the champions league. Lahm was incredible in attacking and defending, his skill on the ball was something else. He never left the Bundesliga, because he never wanted to. He is a down to earth guy and lives a family live, he was rooted in Munich and didn't want to put his family through moving across the continent. Maradona himself said that lahm was his successor, he was a fan of Lahm. It's a real shame how many people are sleeping on him.

My all time 11 (4-3-1-2): Neuer, Cafu, Beckenbauer, Maldini, Facchetti, Xavi, Neeskens, Zidane, Messi, Pele, Cr7. Substitutes(7): Yashin, Baresi, Matthaus, Maradona, Nazario Ronaldo, R. Carlos, Cruyff. Notable exclusions(can easily walk into any world Xi): Pirlo, Iniesta, G. Best, Buffon, Gerd Muller, Dani Alves, Platini, Di Stefano, Rijkaard, Scirea, Garrincha, Breitner, Puskas, Dinho, Ramos, Henry, P. Lahm, Scholes, Iker Casillas, M. Desailly, L. Suarez, Modric, Cannavaro, P. Vieira. Reasons behind selection: Cafu and Facchetti will be the key attacking fullbacks in this side who are adept at attack and defense to compensate the lack of pure wingers in the squad upfront. Messi takes a central 10 role, Pele and Cr7 are the wide forwards with Pele operating freely and Ronaldo in a more 4-4-2ish striker role getting support from the flanks with exceptional playmakers as Messi and Zizou behind. This side is loaded with technicians and masterminds who are phenomenal with the ball in keeping possession as well as distributing either horizontally with short passes or vertically and diagonally with ping passes and accurate long balls (here Beckenbauer and Neeskens come into play whereas Xavi dictates the tempo).

Some of my favs that i watched... Koeman, Seedorf, Chilavert, Peter Schmeichel, Costacurta, Romario, Del Piero, Roberto Baggio, David Villa, Batistuta, Maradona, Pirlo, Totti, Thuram, Buffon, Casillas, Bergkamp, Muller, Sammer, Scholes, Shearer, Henry, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Shevchenko, Ruud Gullit, Vialli, Desailly, Roy Keane, Vieira, If i had to choose 11 from those.... Romario David Villa Ronaldinho Seedorf Pirlo Vieira Koeman Costacurta Thuram Sammer Casillas A 90's inspired Bielsa style 1-3-3-3/3-1-3-3. Costacurta can step out and Sammer slot into central defence. Seedorf tucks in alongside Vieira narrow and Ronaldinho pushes up and has license to roam anywhere.

I came back to read the comments sections and everyone has picked out some great, great players. There's some amazing teams. Some players who haven't got much of a mention and ought to be in the mix - Javier Zanetti. What a player. Longevity, adapting his game, just will go under everyone's radar. Alan Hansen. He was unbeatable in his prime. You'd be hard pressed to find a finer ball-playing Central Defender. Sinisa Mihailovic. Not only for his incredible set pieces, but for his aggressive and determined play, he was a winner through and through. Clarence Seedorf. Could do it all. Slotted into any role in midfield and did it as good as anyone else could. George Best - Britain's finest ever player. Miroslav Klose. He is the World Cup top scorer for a reason. His timing, never wasting motion, is unrivalled in football. Hugo Sanchez. What a player. Roy Keane/Patrick Viera/Steven Gerrard - defined their teams. Made them tick. Got you a goal right when you needed it.

Some interesting choices.. And I do think a) it's very difficult to settle on an all time 11 in general, because there simply have been too many greats at several positions many of whom would easily be equally deserving.. b) because it also really depends on the system, so technically you would almost have to do an all time 11 for every formation.. Next consideration is, do you just go with a random squad based on percepted best talent - or would you try and put a squad together that could actually work well..? Personally, I am always learning towards the latter (which is why I think the Barcelona midfield trio is a perfectly reasonable choice).

Agreed. Cole would be in contention for the left-back spot in my all time 11. Also (whisper it) but Carlos wasn't actually as good as people remember him. There were better left-backs around at the time. Lizarazu, Candela, Ziege to name a few. Carlos was a good attacker and would smash in an outrageous free-kick every 100 games or so. But positionally and defensively he wasn't that great.

There's some lovely footage of an attacking midfielder who takes down a ball with his right foot instep, swivels on it elegently almost a pirouette and then pings it outwards with the outside of his left foot. I know who you're all thinking, it's Zidane right? Pretty much a textbook example of how he played. Wrong- it's Bobby Charlton. This is someone who was playing in the 50s and 60s and it took my breath away watching that because honestly, the technique and poise was exactly the same as someone playing with a modern ball and boots.

IMO he was better at CB. Or at least how the positions are now played. He wasn't fast or athletic so he could never play like Cafú, Roberto Carlos or Alves. But he was so incredibly elegant and his reading of the game was so prescient, he didn't even need to tackle. He just hoovered up any balls getting within a 5 m circle near him.

OG Ronaldo was something out of this world. The single season he played for Barcelona was absolutely magical. One really has to wonder how his career would have panned out without the crippling injuries and the weird epileptic attack previous to the '98 WC final. Btw, his crazy one man against a whole team goal was against Compostela. ;)

I had a football magazine back in the day that had a picture of OG ronaldo. The left page was a defender sprinting as hard as they can. The right page was ronaldo running through. They were both near the middle of the magazine so looked close - but it was a fold out picture that when you pulled the right page showed there was two pages of empty grass between them. Don’t know if I described it well, but it’s an image I’ll never forget. He’d make my team just for that
