Following multiple delays, the UK government’s new review on gambling is expected to be released later this week, amid mounting concerns about gambling's harm on people's finances and mental health.
The industry has dramatically changed since the Gambling Act was brought in, in 2005 - most significantly the booming online market, driven by the ubiquity of smartphones.
Clinicians and charities say users have been failed by the lack of regulation. One of those is 27-year-old Lewis who has lost £100,000 to gambling, relapsed 12 times, and at his lowest point contemplated suicide.
Newsnight’s Anna Collinson met with him.

I've lost over $1.5 million to this disgusting addiction and I'm only 31 years old. I lost a house, my dream car and more. Currently on the path to loosing my 2nd house. This addiction is something people on the outside could never understand. Every day I find it easier to understand why some people choose suicide. The pain and shame is so overwhelming.

I'm in the same boat mate, i'm 40 and them FOBT machines have absolutely SLAUGHTERED my finances ! You can't win playing bookies machines especially, but gambling is temporary form, and that type of luck has a shelf life ! Simple as ! Them machines are even worse at £2, they go through money like a hot knife through butter ! A night at the Casino ect literally is as states, a night out, but then machines are financial suicide! As someone who worked in the bookies for 10+ years. This what bookmakers do. They set up shops in the poorest and most deprived areas to keep people in the grip, you often see area managers and higher people telling staff to check on customers welfare not realise it’s only for the company’s legislation in the event of them getting sued hence the jobsworth like people who think they have a career in that industries. Our government will never intervene because of the TAX from the machines and over the counter bets. A nation suffers so a few small people can gain. Gambling is worse than taking crack cocaine, at least when you buy crack you get what you buy, gambling is uncertain and in the houses favour. Too many good men and women lose there life’s over gambling

As somebody who has lived through this, watching this video is heartbreaking. But reading the comments is even more heartbreaking. Over a 10 year span I gambled every penny I had. I thought I’d never be able to stop. It’s coming up 6 years since I last placed a bet. The road is tough, it’s long. But the end comes around quicker than you could ever imagine. Since stopping I’ve cleared my debt and gained a perfect credit rating, got engaged and married, bought a house and have a son. I’m not saying this to gloat, but to hopefully show even 1 person that YOU can do this too. If anybody just needs help or even to talk. I’m here. Accept the help.

The thing is with the pokies and table games at casinos, is that nobody wants to walk out of there with anything less than they walked in with. And that a lot of the times results on continuous betting in an attempt to get positive. And that’s how people lose most of the time. And then the next time you come, you’ll get say $500 ahead. And then you’ll start to think about how last time you lost $1500. So now you have got to try and win another $1000. And than you’re back to neutral. And than now you’ll want to get ahead. Most of the time you will lose it all.

I came back to following football after 10+ years and the most striking thing is the onslaught of betting ads around the pitch and placed on every shirt. Even multiple on one. It is shocking that people in the comments are so dense to think this is normal. I thought American sports were bad, but they are no where near as saturated as football.

With gambling the biggest thing to know is it's a losing game. The game is rigged against you. And while you might win sometimes it's a profitable business designed to extract your cash. Keep playing and losing is inevitable. You need to know when to quit. Dopamine is a hell of a drug, but you have to find ways to ignore it. I would say find other things that give dopamine to distract you but that's bad advice as otherwise you'll constantly be chasing that high and it will lead to other bad decisions. I think the most important thing is to come to accept the low points and that you don't always need to be running on that exciting feeling of a win. Try to be content with the everyday. Maybe even cut out the highs to find a happier steady state. The lows will probably still be there but hopefully they are lesser too. And it's less of a fall from the extreme high points that make them feel alot more pronounced.

The worst thing that can happen is winning on that first day especially if it's a large amount; completely rewires your brain to think of it as an option and as if winning is easy when it isn’t. If you lose on your first session you just think “this is stupid why do people gamble” and never play again. If you win then you start the cycle. (I can win again) and you might but then eventually you won’t but since you’ve won before, you put in more. Nothing. You’re frustrated you start betting higher. You lost everything you’ve won before + some, now you need to win your money back so you keep going. You promise you'll stop if you get it back. You may get it back but what about those previous winnings you lost? You keep going, you lose, you just want your money back and you’ll quit you swear. You've gotten it back several times so it's possible. You nearly get it back. You keep going. You lose everything you have. You use your savings. You get a win but it’s not enough anymore. You have to bet higher. Nothing. Now you work extra hours, borrow money just to go back and get that win. You lose or get such small wins that it's frustrating and useless. You keep going. You lose. Now you need to pay everyone off so you go back. It’s hell.

Also they give you a lot of cash bonuses etc that keep you going back. The "relapsing" thing is so true too. I've been able to get away from it for a week or so but always succumb in the end.

Yes, I agree, it’s a lonely life, occasionally people will talk to me there and I see some regulars that I say hi to, but it’s not the same as spending time with family. Gambling robbed me not only from my money but from spending time with my son who was 8 when it started and now he’s 19. I was there for him sometimes but gambling took a lot of my time away from my son and my partner 😢

"Reasonabilitiy"?? O_o If you mean 'responsibility', you did NOT listen to this video. He was a CHILD when he started, someone with no life experience and therefore no clue or guidance as to what he was getting himself into. Addiction is just that; it has nothing to do with intelligence, willpower or responsibility, because the brain is wired differently. Gambling addicts simply can't stop by themselves without outside help, any more than the alcoholic or drug addict can't, because the addiction has hijacked their brain and taken control.

@@SevenEllen addiction can happen at any age as long as purity has passed those pheromones and he was 16 years old when he started and waited until he was 18 years old (legally adult) to go into gambling fully and relapsed a few times and admitted to it because only you can control your actions by free will. Yes there temptation around him whether it is on the streets or online. He wasn’t pushed by friends or family because by the sounds of it his friends and family never knew and because of that he never seek that support he needed to help him overcome his addiction. Addiction wakes up the good feeling pheromones in your brain when you win and from the adrenaline rush you want more of it. I should to smoke and through will power and years of pushing myself I managed to quit and I started smoking at 16 years old and at 27 years old I was able to fully quit my smoking addiction and have saved so much money.

Gambling addiction is horrible. Especially losing your wages within a few hours/days of receiving them. To all gamblers, please please please at the minimum pay off all your expenses (rent, loans, borrowed money, bills) before you gamble the rest. Obviously in an ideal world, don’t gamble at all - but at least if you lose it all, you have the essentials paid.

Gambling is positive for my mental health. Makes me feel in control and like i can achieve things that would otherwise be out of reach. So-called "gambling problems" are 100% psychological. You simply need to be prepared to lose it all. Gambling impulsively is different to gambling in a cautious and calculated manner. You gotta behave and operate like a casino, and not a customer who just throws money at a game for thrill and excitement.

It's a chemical reaction caused by stimulation and the release of dopamine, everyone has an addiction of some sort that they cannot just simply NOT do. Gambling has a strong hold on the psyche as it designed to do this. It's socially accepted even though it is has some of the worst stats when it comes to suicide. I think it only happens once people experience a big gambling win, so following that point they can't help but think about how effortlessly they were able to make that money whenever they're working hard to earn a living, which then compels them to gamble again; obviously gambling is a for-profit industry and the odds are heavily skewed, but I imagine having that first-hand experience kills your ability to think rationally
