Tillotson 212 E-Start Budget Build + Rip | 7,000 RPM Torque Monster!

We build the Tillotson 212 electric start engine in Charles' Coleman CT200U-EX mini bike! Charles likes his Coleman mini bike to be torquey, so we chose a camshaft, carburetor, and other options for this Tillotson 21w electric start to reflect his tastes. In order to keep the factory flywheel with the ring gear for electric start, we have to keep the RPMs somewhat down. Thankfully, the MOD 2 camshaft makes power to 7,000, with lots of torque at the low end.
Thanks for Watching!

I gotta be honest, there is something about watching small engine mini bike builds and doing it to that makes it more fun and enjoyable than building car engines. It’s like we don’t have the stress that comes along with doing big money builds you know? This is where you find true enjoyment with the right people as you take turns trying it out and not having to worry too much about letting each other ride what you just built.

You guys are an inspiration. I have been seeking out the oldest Briggs & stratton's and Motors that I can find for years. I can rebuild cars but I find it far more satisfying to build small stuff. I appreciate your guys's videos and wish that I could do what you. unfortunately I've been in a relationship for 2 years wouldn't allow me to go out and work in my shop that I built just for that reason. But on the positive side that relationship just ended and now I have plenty of free time to get back out in the shop and it feels good. I can say it feels very rewarding to find an old motor they hasn't run in years and get that baby running again. Much respect. I don't know how old my oldest motor is but it's a two and a half horsepower Briggs & Stratton 4 stroke with a horse hair that you have to oil air filter and a 2:1 gear reduction supposedly it was for a water pump at one time and it's the oldest piece I have. As a side hobby I rebuild riding lawn mowers and build racing lawn mowers to ride on the beach which bypass the street legal laws. My fastest lawn mower does over 30 and rides huge wheelies.

I remember an old farmer here in Indiana had a 2x2 called a Rokon that he bought back in the mid 1970's. He had an entire assortment of the product upgrades. One being a short snow plow blade, a water pump set up & some other farm implement equipment. He'd always say. "Go get the mototractor, it'll do all the work for us" This was a great video here.

I helped bring the cracked rod to the 7.3L Powerstroke diesel. It's great from a manufacturing standpoint and the cap only fits one way, fits perfectly and is a more stable connection to the main rod body. I had concerns about replacing the old 4140 forged rods with a powdered metal rod. The forging was stronger and able to bend in hydro lock situations where the powdered rod would break. But we never had a bunch of engine failures due to the change to fractured powdered rods.

Trick for removing studs: take an extra nut that fits the stud and make a “clamp nut tool”. Take the spare nut and cut through a flat all the way through to the threads. Now spin the nut onto the stud and squeeze it using vice grips etc. the nut will grip the stud on all sides equally and not damage them. Also works for gripping a threaded stock/bolt etc in a lathe to cut etc.

Interesting build. I installed a NR Racing 280 series marine cam, #26 springs, and billet rod in both of my neighbors boys Coleman EX and tweaked the governor to 4800-5000 rpm with carb re-jetting and header. Installed torque converters. Beast up to 5000 rpm. I still advised not to hold it at full throttle for more than a few seconds.

Fracture-split conn rods are cheaper to produce too, they're stronger, and have a longer service life than separately machined caps. I think that is so cool! I love engines!!! They are the best invention in human history by far, and yet barely even considered by anyone, who literally depend on them every day to work flawlessly.

About 5 years ago, I was working at an auto repair shop. Just me, and the owner. His wife also did paperwork and stuff. One lunch, I was reading a Hot Rod mag, and they were discussing rod big end types. they mentioned the cracked ones. 2 hours later, we were dropping the oil pan, on a car with "rod noise." Boss said, let's see if it is just bearing noise. Removed the rod cap, and it was a cracked rod, which neither of us had ever seen. (Except in that Hot Rod Magazine.) The rod bearing and the rod journal "looked" OK. Put the oil pan back on, oiled it, and it ran, just fine, for about 3 minutes. The car was a cheap, used up, econobox. Wasn't worth pulling the crank, and getting it turned and more bearings. It was worth the hour we put in. Funny thing, seeing the article in HRM, and then seeing our first cracked rod. steve

It can crack it, and it becomes a ticking time bomb, just waiting for that "special" day. If you must use a hammer, do EXACTLY like in the vid and take care to not make any contact with the flywheel. (and if you can, try a block of wood/hammer or SOFT hammer , such as brass, lead, etc... That usually works, too... just need "mass"). Keep up the great work fellas! You guys make this look soooooo easy! lol! I'm loving the details that you're putting into the video about the engine work, it gives me an idea about how to do one of these myself. Great work as always! ( p.s. who's the new camera monkey? they're doing a great job!)

Ike @14 minutes you talked about cracked rods. It's a 90s technology for the powered steel rods. It's called Cracked Caps. The big end of the rod is broken. That break means the rod can only go back together the way it was broken. Down to micro scope level the various cracks make the rod stronger. When the rod is assembled you can't see the seam like you can on CNC stuff

Ikr you were talking about the one piece rods. I have those on my 2j. When I first got them in I was so confused. But yes they are very cool

you guys should get one of those front disk brake kits from gps for his coleman. while gps only has the mb 200 kit, it apparently works also on the coleman from what the reviews on the site have said. i'm planning on snagging one for my coleman before i do any engine swaps.

It looks like they took my suggestion and got rid of the lap time by hand. This is great. More accurate by far

That Coleman minibike looks like a beast, I love it, the only thing I might try is a 440 cc snowmobile engine. That would be even more scary :-)
