I did my first kettlebell workout 2 days ago and my swings felt terrible and my hamstrings were very sore too I’ll do them again tomorrow and I’ll work on improving my technique and hopefully my body gets used to it too so I can do them more often

Why is the flytrap hand suboptimal? If it is just whilst the kettlebell is stationary does it make any difference?

Thanks for asking Jonathan! Great question! Two reasons why you want to close your hands into a fist: 1. People (especially beginners) tend to extend their fingers under tension. This costs additional energy and is not necessary. 2. Closing your hands to a fist builds a good habit to complete the hand insertion in general .(For cleans, Jerks etc.) The second point is important. If you Clean, Jerk (or combine both), you need solid stability in the shoulder. Closing the fingers to a fist can add to building more tension. You also don't want to keep your fingers extended in the rack position when cleaning weights (especially doubles). So it makes for a good movement habit. It's not a mistake if you keep your fingers extended; I even see professionals sometimes do it. It's just a detail that still makes a good difference. - Gregory

I was just thinking the other day about how many "deadlift start" swing sets I did in the mid-2000s not (quite) knowing any better. Almost identical to the video; good kb deadlift and then a couple mini-swings to get the weight moving. Heh. Live and learn...

Your point about the shoulder in flexion and internal rotation is interesting. It may be due to what your shoulders are used to because from the olympic weightlifters I've talked to they pretty much universally go into internal rotation when they do an olympic snatch or jerk. Granted it is anecdotal but I it's something I'm going to look further into.

Interesting observation! However, the "Olympians" typically have their arms adducted as well which creates more space in the shoulder. - Gregory

This is a very interesting point and I think it’s probably due to the weight being on a barbell rather than free in each hand. Now that you mention it and I’m thinking about it, I do tend to internally rotate with barbell snatch or jerks and my shoulders feel fine (in fact, strong) in that position. However, if I internally rotate them with a kettlebell, they feel compromised.

Ha! Tim Ferris isn’t the only one! I did it at a hardstyle certification in 2016. When I was re-certifying for StrongFirst that year, I switched to the Russian pendulum swing at around rep 60/65 in the five minute snatch test. I planned it all along because I had already started dabbling in Kettlebell Sport and knew that it was more efficient. I also knew that after one had passed the snatch technique portion of the test (just 5 per side), that they didn’t hold you to a hardstyle standard for the 100 rep/5 minute snatch test. So when I started to fatigue a little, I switched to the pendulum and finished all 100 reps in 4:25. It pays to know a little about both disciplines.

Thanks for sharing! Legend has it, that they don‘t allow deviation from their high tension technique in certain certs. 🤷‍♂️

@@lebe-stark over the course of two different certifications, I saw a lot of people fail the 5 minute test trying to adhere to the strict hardstyle snatch. But I had one of the top TOP dogs at StrongFirst tell me that the only real requirements for the 5 snatch test that they were looking for were pass through and lockout overhead. And even then, the overhead lockouts were shaky for many. Especially at the higher reps.
