If you go through the trailer, you will see scenes that are very nearly EXACT reflections of life in Miami. More than one South Florida-centric social media accounts have posted shot-for-shot comparisons between the trailer and things that have actually happened there. The woman with the hammer, the drivers spinning donuts in the middle of a South Beach intersection, the gator getting pulled out of the pool, the dancer twerking on top of a vehicle on I-95, the gator walking into the convenience store, the mug shot of the guy with all the tattoos... all that stuff happened in real life. And speaking as someone who is a born-and-raised Miamian, I can play Vice City and not only name all the real-life landmarks that are represented in the game, but I can similarly point to plot points in the storyline that reflect ACTUAL EVENTS that I remember from my childhood in Miami in the 1980's. I have no doubt that I'll be able to do the same with GTA 6. Oh, and guess what? Not that it actually matters, but the racial majority in Miami-Dade County as of the 2020 census was about 69% (nice) Hispanic or Latino. Even in the 80's, only 46% of residents identified as "White (Non-Hispanic)," so Miami Vice even got the balance right by reflecting a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. That's just the demographic reality of the area. So if Tim Pool or anyone else out there wants to accuse Rockstar Games of being "woke" for their representation of life in South Florida, then guess what? Real life in South Florida is "woke."

This was the hardest conversation I’ve ever had to listen to because as soon as Tim mentioned the idea of who you are in the game and who you play as it immediately told me he knows nothing about this and he’s just talking about it for the clicks. In GTA, you aren’t forced to play anyone you can literally be whoever you want guy or girl.

There are so many guys that when given the option will choose to play as a female character. They would rather prefer looking at a female when playing. I just don't think there's any credit to what these goofballs are saying, they're not in touch with the videogame industry or the customers of those games at all.

There was a cheat code in GTA 3 that would change your main character into other random background characters from the game. My favorite random character to play was a young red haired woman in a black trenchcoat. I would cycle through all the choices until she popped up and I'd commence to kick ass. I'm a black guy.

Grand Theft Auto was after my time, but I lol'd at Emma beating up sex workers and hitting people with her car in the game lol. I remember playing a game on my Commodore 64 in the 80s called "Speed Racer" which was just a simple racing game where people would cross the road in front of you, and you could play for "angel points" by avoiding them, or "devil points" by running them over lol. If you honked your horn the people would speed up, which could make them easier to avoid....or hit, depending on what you were trying to do. Not going to lie, I thought it was hilarious to play for devil points and that's all I ever did lol.

I am 47 year old woman and vice city was the first ps2 game I ever played, and I played it a lot even with my female coworker on our freetime. I also played gta3 and san andreas, but then other things came in to my life. But I still sometimes miss these games.

All the way back to Scarface (1932) the gangster genre has been about balancing this tension between our uneasy fascination with crime/violence (possibly not a very good thing for us to indulge in art but we love it!) and critiquing the corruption of the American dream by taking a marginalised character and making them the central anti-hero (probably actually quite a progressive element of the genre). It was Italian immigrants in Scarface (1932) it was Cuban immigrants in Scarface (1983), there’s talk of the latest Scarface remake in the works being about a Mexican immigrant. Menace II Society and Boyz n the Hood influence San Andreas and its parody of the LA riots, an Eastern European human trafficker immigrant in GTAIV (some say Niko is meant to be Serbian). MAGA nerds should be pleased as it’s essentially a British (Scottish and English creative leads) loving tribute and update of a classic American art form.
