A sneak peek of Jaycen Joshua, Timbaland and Dave Pensado’s ‘Production Seminar’ series in which they talk about the most important part of making music: groove and feeling.
Don’t miss our first series featuring the phenomenal music producer Timbaland and the outstanding mixers Jaycen Joshua & Dave Pensado. In this 2-hour installment hosted at Studios La Fabrique, they discuss the trajectory of Timbaland's fascinating career, his production approach, and the unique style that he has infused into countless hit records. Tim shares details of the creative process behind projects with Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, and other premium acts. He recounts how he began making beats with curated samples, and explains why some aspects of his early workflow are still crucial - yet often overlooked - in today's world. Jaycen and Timbaland stresses the power of human feel, groove, and imperfection as attributes of music that connect so strongly with listeners. They also elaborate on other topics including trends, competition, ego, team-building, and much more!

When he asked “can you sleep?” I felt that. I hear music playing in my head 24/7. My tracks im working on, old tracks, music I’m into lately, old nostalgic sounds, everything. It’s hard to sleep. I’ll even be doing the rhythm with my teeth while I’m laying down trying to sleep.

these are major words of wisdom! The points about leaving space in the song is huge. Just because an idea may fit in the song doesn't mean it needs to be there. Idk if others have experienced this, but sometimes when I listen to songs I swear there's a certain part in the background but when I take a closer listen I realize there wasn't actually anything there, I was just perceiving it because the parts that were there left space for my own mind to fill in some of the blanks. I think it's kind of like when you're reading a good fiction book you get to decide what the characters look like, the settings, etc. some depravation lets the consumer's creative mind play along and it adds enjoyment.

Mr. Pensado's starry-eyed facial expressions are what drives this interview home for me. I have so much respect for Timbaland and Pensado, and to see him truly excited in the position of an interview host to Timbaland is just heart-warming and fascinating to watch.

Yes, music is right outside. Timbaland is not used to the compliments one after the other, and very beautiful compliments, as well. His face answering the second question. I love the way he's bolstered by their very complimentary interviewing style. It is so emotional watching him get to say it. and he says it like jazz musician from the 20's.

The thing is, Timbo is from the generation where there was analog tape to record all the tracks, made with gear like the ASR-10, or the MPC3000 etc. Limitations made him really listen to his own productions in the process of creation, and perfect his sound. A producer who is used to analog and oldschool hardware samplers will find it easier to jump into a modern DAW, than a young producer who is used to a DAW-only setup, switching to an oldschool gear.
@Xsynth
@Xsynth Жыл бұрын
That old gear was like a rite of passage, you had to really invest in learning how to work with what was available. I think it made people better musicians honestly. Nowadays, the tools are so powerful, that is a question who is using who, the musician or the tool.

Wow I just got my first serious mixer in today. My new Prosonus 32! whew! Can't wait to hook it up at my rehearsal, now recording and live broadcast studio tomorrow. It's still in the box. I went to Full Sail in Orlando in 79/80. It was the last year for analog. So right off the bat as a 18-19 yr old lil rock drummer my education was already falling to the side. You know that didnt' bother me. I learned the important details of signal flow, but I never wanted to play like precision, chart reading, right brain having to think about it. I have always played by feel. I learned by ear only and startd gigging at 15. My influence was Deep Purple, Montrose, Zep, ZZT, later on the amazing high energy next level brought to us by Van Halen, Priest, Thin Lizzy, etc. Later on still was the all emotion wrapped darkness of Alice In Chains, STP, Nickelback, even some Limp Bizkit and Off spring. Now I am working on recording a series of Alice Cooper songs that I never really listened to before as they were not the radio hits. That stuff has so much attitude and real feel it pulls me right back in the zone fast. Like my current fav Go Man Go. Man I can't wait to record my feel in that stuff and let it out with a big kit and the big backline old school renewed in your face rock band. I've been called out as a "BOOMER" in comments and chats. Man they have no idea. I freakin drop the BOOM in boomer LOL! It's all about the feel. Music is a communication of emotion. Damn cool finding this video. Really enjoyed you guys. Subscribed/Liked! Great points of view outside the box. It's about what's real. If it doesn't grab you and make you unable to sit still, it's dead on arrival.

Lil old school Tidbit… Don’t know about everyone else and this is not to discredit anyone, but in the 757 back then we all did that same stutter step style in the cafeteria during lunch from elementary on up beating on the cafe tables. There you have it ladies and gents. Tim just incorporated into mainstream. See real MC’s won’t ready for that. They were on boom bap back then. I was doing it around the same time. Rappers were like WTF is this man gimme that grimey ish! If you notice Tim brought it out doing R&B not rap. He kicked it off back when he was with D Swing of Jodeci. Then Missy and Magoo , Babygirl (RIP) then everyone else.
