I think an important piece of the Spurs reasoning was wanting to preserve their ~$25 million in cap space while maintaining the draft asset rather than drafting a player they didn't want and using up $8 million in space

This is so true, I think KOC is being very very shortsighted in his analysis. The spurs basically traded Jakob Poeltl for a swap and unprotected pick PLUS a ton of cap flexibility. There’s no point in drafting someone and using cap space just to draft someone you aren’t sold on.

I am sorry but getting two draft picks from a bad draft is not a bad choice. The value of the wolves near term picks (which they already traded) is very low cause they are a good team. Getting far away picks is more valuable. Also the Spurs have brought in 5 rookies in the last 3 years, all of which are like 19 year old as rookies. They don't need a short PG with no defense. Spurs did a smart move. Not for the media's obsession for Wemby getting another "Star" but for the development of a title team when Victor reaches his prime in 3-4 years
