I’ve gotten lots of comments suggesting I pile the firewood instead of stacking. I’ve tried piling in the past and wasn’t really impressed with the results. Since it is so much easier to pile I thought I would give it another try.

Now, use pallets to build sides and you can mound it much higher, which means less moister exposure, and better drying

Piling seems to be working for " In the Woodyard" .I think it will depend on rain and humidity in your area. Have a good Christmas.

Yeah I could see things molding in a hurry in your area. I just have to wait and see. I think as long as I don’t make the piles too large I’ll be okay. Merry Christmas brother God bless.

I do a double layer of pallets on the ground for air flow underneath. I only go two pallets wide and then as long of a row as my space allows. Seems to dry well for my area.

I am going to experiment this upcoming year. I have only stacked off the ground so far, but have built a pallet bin for piling, keeping oak separate to stack. I will attempt to pile half and stack half and see how things go. Merry Christmas!!

Just a quick thought. There are lots of people who take their experience and decide it applies to everyone else, regardless of locality or variation in weather patterns, or variations in human nature. I don't really care about the look of my firewood storage. That's the way I am wired. Other folks love the long, tidy stacks and thats fine too. Here in upstate NY, wood dries in heaps pretty reliably, but we don't have the high humidity of the mid atlantic states or of central US. Thats ok. My point is i make long winrows first of rounds, and later of splits , on pallets and only handle the wood once. Again, thats what works for me, and maybe not for anyone else. Ive heated primarily with wood since the 70s, and have constantly evolved toward less handling because with age, minutes, hours and days have become scarcer looking forward. I want to spend more time with my family and less with a splitter. At any rate, peace on Earth, good will to all people. Embrace your family, and respect other woodhounds different ways.

Part of the problem with piling is that the first stuff on is the last stuff off so you're waiting for the newest (i.e. less time to dry) stuff to get dry before you use / sell it. Oak dries so darn slow anyway that piling it seems like you're just deciding not to use it for a couple years and that's if you can keep the majority of the rain/snow off the top. It *is* easier to pile than to stack, that's a fact.
@OGAOutdoors

Yeah that makes sense but I’m not planning on a huge pile. It should be done in a relatively short time so it all should be about the same age. If I like the results I might try multiple piles or a long pile where I can remove the wood that’s the oldest.

Ash is amazing stuff. The green variety will be dry enough to use in DAYS, if its from a dead tree. Splits easy, and smells great too. Knotty crotches can be a real pain though - but its the best wood in the tree!

Was your previous piling experience not on pallets? Keeping the pile off the ground is the key to success IMO. I still stack my oak because it takes so long to dry but everything else I process gets tossed in a piled pallet row and it’s great. 👍

Whatever you save on time initially it’s taking longer to load for deliveries.
@OGAOutdoors

I know how much my truck holds. I normally load from different stacks depending on what the customer wants or what I need to move. So loading from a stack shouldn’t really matter.

The time you saved not stacking the pallets, you wasted stacking in truck and trailer. Just toss on truck and trailer, mound up higher and haul same amount of wood. If you try to haul anymore than that you will over load your equipment anyway. U would have put truck on opposite side of splitter too, so you don’t have to walk around it. Saved steps is saved time, which is saved money

I understand what you are trying to do. It is a lot easier than stacking the rows. But I really like seeing all of your rows of firewood drying in the yard. Plus won’t this be harder to determine how much you are putting in a customers vehicle? Regardless, another great video Ben.
@OGAOutdoors
@OGAOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
James yes it will be more complicated for pickups. I plan to use it for delivery. I always load my deliveries from different stacks to mix the load based on what I need to get rid of. This should work fine on a small scale as long as it dries.
