Here is some Pink Floyd Live to accompany our reaction to The Dark Side of the Moon Side 1. It is our first time hearing (and watching) Time and The Great Gig in the Sky from the 1994 PULSE concert, which was held at Earl's Court. We also check out a cover version of Breathe by Open Door.
We have never heard these performances before. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

trivia: those cool sounding drums in the intro are called roto toms. you can change the pitch by rotating the rim. in fact, there was on shot in the video where you can see mason adjusting the pitch while he was playing.

It’s not a theatre, it was a conference and event centre and even hosted the international boat show including boats afloat in pools created by the floor sinking away on hydraulic jacks and then flooded. Configured for a concert it would take officially 19000 but would often have 22000 people and Pink Floyd filled it for 14 nights straight and could have sold the same amount of tickets again but the other tour dates couldn’t be changed. Just an odd bit of info when on this tour Pink Floyd had $94,000,000 worth of lighting equipment.

You want to hear from a floydite I'm it I'm 73 years young and listened to pink floyd for fifty odd years for me one off if not the greatest progressive sycadelic rock band ever a lot of their talent I believe lies in their ability to highten your emotions through their lyrics and musical prowess I will never tier of listening to them you guys need to listen to echoes played at the ghdansk concert and shine on you crazy diamond comfortably numb us and them the turning away to name but a few unfortunately time marches on but pink Floyd's music will live on I don't think we will see another group that can come close to them enjoy the journey I'm loving it

For clarity, none of these singers is Clare Torry. The performer and composure of the original songs' vocals. She performed it with Pink Floyd live only at a few shows. These ladies do a fine job. Was lucky to catch Pink Floyd live one time. Most of Dark Side of the Moon was performed. May, 1988 in Columbus, Ohio at the horseshoe. I've seen hundreds of different bands live, Floyd is still in my top 5. To say it is an experience is an understatement. Cheers to you both. 🎼

FYI....in order to better reproduce their studio work, they had extra musicians on tour - regular drummer nick Mason was assisted by Gary Wallis on percussion, Richard Wright's keyboards (RIP) were enhanced by additional keyboard/vocals player Jon Carin. Background/rhythm guitar by Snowy White for the Delicate Sound Of Thunder...later, on the 1994 Division Bell tour, promoting their final studio album (later released as the live album "PULSE") - it was Tim Renwick. The background vocalists here are Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontaine (RIP). Bassist Guy Pratt took over in the late '80s after the falling out between Roger Waters and David Gilmour.

Great Job, Mike and Dev! The quality, attention to detail and extras on your vids are top notch! I keep trying to push your channel around the webs. This channel is deserving 100k more at this stage not to put a scale on this quality. Are the Busy People just too busy to leave a like.? Yes, it's a big venue, it used to hold (before its demolition) 20,000 people. But that's not the remarkable thing. The remarkable thing is that Pink Floyd filled the place for FOURTEEN NIGHTS IN A ROW. This means that they played to 280,000 people. I saw them in 1974, 20 years earlier at that same venue, for their performance of the their then-new album - Dark Side of the Moon.

To let you know it's seats 19,000 at Earl's Court and Pink Floyd sold that show out 15 nights in a row for over a quarter of a million fans who attended this concert in that one venue!!! If people heard that Pink Floyd was touring they leave in the middle of their own weddings to go stand in line for tickets and I'm only half kidding there!! And you should try Comfortably Numb from the same concert if you want to see "there actual light show" and how big their performances can become!!!

Great Gig in the Sky Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon Album is in essence about Death. An event that all of humanity is destined to experience at one point or another, in one way or another be it our own death or the death of a loved one. Depending on each individual's level of compassion and acceptance of death, persistent traumatic grief can cause us to cycle through the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. These stages are our attempts at processing change brought about by the traumatic loss of a loved one or the acceptance of ones own mortality and to protect ourselves while we adapt to our new reality. Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky is about such a journey. The opening lyrics start with denial and end with acceptance.

12:10 absolutely giant stage. You're actually one of the few reactors picking that up. 55 meters wide, 40 meters high. Bigger than their The Wall stage, which at the time was too big to fit into most venues (48 m wide, with a 10m wall built during the first half of the concert in1980). Mind you, Roger Waters' stage for the one-off The Wall live in Berlin in 1990 was about 170 meters wide, featuring a 25 meter high wall, and construction cranes carrying the light rigs. A motorized military parade drove across that stage at one point.

@ianfortier6796
@ianfortier6796 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gilmour uses a couple phrases within each solo as an anchor for each show but no solo is ever duplicated. Everything he does solo-wise is based on how he feels in the moment.
@rmyikzelf5604
@rmyikzelf5604 Жыл бұрын
Indeed. They 'feel' the same, and the sound is similar and is the phrasing, and the sound quality, but both the Time and Comfortably Numb soli on the album are not reproduceable live because of all the studio trickery going on. Just listen to what is going on in the fading solo on CN on the album. I wish he did that live! It's a myth Pink Floyd just reproduced the album sound live.
@ianfortier6796
@ianfortier6796 Жыл бұрын
@rmyikzelf5604 I wouldn't say they're not reproducible or that there's studio trickery going on. I think it's more that Gilmour plays by feel which is why every live solo is different aside from some specific markers.

@ianfortier6796 Gilmour himself has said in interviews that he liked to put things in his recorded solos and splice different takes together (using studio trickery) so that people trying to figure them out would think "how the hell does he do that?". And that that immediately posed a bit of a problem for the band, to do them live. If you listen to the solo in Time, there are several subtle cuts/splices to different parts and sounds. That solo is not one take. So, yes. Lots of studio trickery going on (in a good way) on Pink Floyd albums, especially in guitar solos. Given the technology they had at their disposal it's a miracle how well they did it.

Calling this band Pink Floyd is like calling George, Paul and Ringo The Beatles without John Lennon. This is the David Gilmour Band and friends. The best Pink Floyd recorded concerts are from the late 60s and early 70s. Most don't have video. 😊

@@flubblert Nope. I would have liked to see everyone go off and do their solo careers. It would have been interesting and original. But the PF money proved stronger than artistic integrity, so we've been subjected to this exalted tribute band doing all the golden oldies for what seems and eternity. The only member who has integrity in this band is Roger Waters. He's also the only member to actually put out compelling albums since 1982. Gilmour and friends just couldn't be satisfied with their millions. I guess the chance to be worth 200-500M bucks was just too compelling for ol' Dave. I love him as a musician, but talk about selling out....
