THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

I’m betting Hex never uses magic in UAF because the creators felt they would need to make it pink instead of red. Sucks that they got rid of the blue and red magic, it’s such an easy fix: Pink: pure mana generation from Gwen and other Anodites Any other color: altered mana to form spells from magicians (and occasionally Gwen)

I feel like you can't have Hex be the guy who takes over the world in the evil future when he hasn't appeared at all in alien force before now, that's always been my issue with this

This dosen't work at all as a reintroduction to the character. It might have been better had we seen the seemingly important event where Mutant Kevin defeats him.

Yeah. If anything, since Vilgax was the reason for Ben and Kevin hacking the Omnitrix, shouldn't this future have been about Vilgax taking over Earth abd using the Omnitrix?

@@auditect950 I think what happens is that charmcaster successfully takes Gwen's powers like in her introduction episode. But because Kevin is not insecure this time she didn't use him or fall for his lies. So she successfully uses an anodite's power and kills Gwen and takes over.

This episode freaked me out as a kid. Mainly due to the fact that they were able to capture Ben and the part when Ben had to stall for Gwen begs the question of what alien he used and if he died as a result.

i was curious about that, too. I guess they didn’t bother bcs it was inconsequential, but maybe seeing humungosaur crashing thru a wall. Or rath in order to gives us sn idea of what events did take place since the point gwen changed the timeline. Or Chromastone to flex that he was never destroyed here, i dunno.

I think personally that what went down in the bad timeline was that Charmcaster and Hex concocted two Spells specifically to counter them. One to glitch out the Omnitrix which is possible since it seems like near anything can glitch it and Mana especially has done that more than once so it should be possible to create a spell specifically to do that. The other was a mix of mind control and forced absorption for Kevin similar to the binds Vulcanus used on Kevin to make him absorb Taydenite against his will though in this case, it was likely a spell that forced him to absorb a Special Rune Stone or something that put him in his enslaved state. In the main timeline he probably has a better handle on his absorption abilities to keep himself from being forced into it or his altered state induced by the Omnitrix kept him from being altered further by whatever they used to control him. As for Gwen, Charmcaster has already created more than one spell to counter her so Hex should be able to help with that. With Kevin and Ben out of commission, they both probably didn't have an issue taking out Gwen.

Remember at first Gwen didn't know how to conceal her mana which charmcaster took advantage of, but afterwards she was able to adapt to it to defeat charmcaster. Maybe in this timeline Gwen didn't get the time to adapt that charmcaster absorbed her totally and we know anodites's are energy beings so with Gwen energy mana she would completely be able to overcome Ben solely ;considering his weakness well known 'mana'

@@ohhellwhereami2574 it seems like the divergence occurs after the point where Gwen interfered. So its possible that first encounter with UAF Charmcaster is part of it though it's implied to be more of an off screen encounter that went wrong

It’s not an uncommon trope in time travel. When he appears at the start of the Map of Infinity fetch quest arc Paradox gives cryptic clues that tie into the end of that mini-arc as well as the Ultimate Kevin arc. His inspiration was on the receiving end multiple times, such as You Are Not Alone in Gridlock being foreshadowing that Professor Yana in Utopia is the Master, another Time Lord, or Jack’s warning of the lone Cyberman in Fugitive of the Judoon being for the events of The Haunting of Villa Diodati. There was a short lived British show called Paradox where the premise was each episode the protagonists get pictures linking to something that would happen later that day, and work out the context of these images across the episode to prevent the disaster happening. No actual time travel by the characters, and the show ended before the cause was ever explained.

He gets in the way of the real hero meant to stop Dagon (Ben and indirectly Vilgax), because “I defeated him once, and I will do it again,” despite several people telling him that’s not gonna happen. George has questionable plans (ex. alien purge) and his assembly of knights is ultimately yet another obstacle for Ben in taking care of the Esoterica and the Creatures from Beyond. Also canon fodder for Dagon XD

This episode is similar to Danny Phantom “Masters Of All Time” Except the fact that Danny found a cure, which is Diet Cola in the end of the episode. As Gwen, couldn’t find another way to cure Kevin until the Omnitrix is destroyed in the season finale

I feel like this one is a bit more important than a 1, at least a 2, because it really shows how gwen was ACTUALLY trying everything she can to turn kevin back just for his own happiness, instead of just having ben tell kevin that gwen is trying we actually get to see it. But i agree with the rest of the review in every regard, great video kuro

Summed up pretty much how I’ve always felt about this episode. To be fair I guess the thought of Charmcaster being able to kill and enslave the trio so easily isn’t too far fetched considering she manages to kill all 3 in Ultimate Alien effortlessly. Definitely one of the franchise’s darkest moments.

I believe that the glitch that was seen in the episode isnt a Omnitrix Hack, in several episodes where Ben quick changed or used to much of the Omnitrix powers, he also got drained of his estamina. You could make a point that the recalibrated Omnitrix and the Ultimatrix both use the users own vitality to mantain the transformation. That would explain why in season 1 and 2, there were times that Ben was still as an alien for longer than he should have, still in Ship's first apearance the Omnitrix before hacked still ran out of power after a few uses. In Dark star rising, after using Quick change several times, Ben also fainted. So thats my explanation, the Ben from this future, wasnt with a broken Omnitrix, he did last months or way more than the others from the trio, still, i think he changed back from Swampfire because of low estamina, his own biological energy. Its intringuing, the Omnitrix could time out either from runing out of power or the users energy.

Something else I do like in this episode is the interactions with Paradox and Gwen. Paradox is a fun and interesting character, and it's nice to see him have a dynamic with someone who isn't Ben, or another version of Ben. It also helps play into the idea that he's looking out of everyone, not just Ben, but also goes about it in a way that he won't solve all problems for them, and instead wants them to learn on their own, but will be there to help fix things if it goes too far.

Dude you dropped the ball with this one. "It leaves us with more questions than answers" That's literally the whole point of the episode: time travel has unforseen and unexpected consequences. And I realize this next point is with the benefit of hindsight but she kills them all in UA all by herself-is it so unfathomable that she could do it with the power of Hex on her side as well?

My biggest issue with this episode was that Hex never attacked in the old timeline, so why would he do so in the new ones? How did Kevin losing some powers cause them to lose a fight that never even should've happened?

Charmcaster used Kevin’s mutation to try drive a wedge between him and Gwen, but she attacked before knowing about it because her motivation was already revenge on Gwen. Maybe if Kevin wasn’t mutated Charmcaster would end up bringing Hex into the picture, or she succeeded in draining Gwen and decided to let her uncle in kn the spoils.

I remember reading fan fiction for this episode that kind of explain how that bad future happens. The stuff with Stone Kevin in this was really heart wrenching every time I see this one.

The episode would have worked better *IF* it had been paired with an earlier episode, where the team foils Hex's 'take-over-the-world' plot first... only then for Gwen's time travel gambit to cure Kevin to mess that up... but Gwen still gets the chance to undo what she did.

They’ve not had the means before. Previous time travel episodes have been others having the power to bring people across time (and indeed Cross Time itself for the first Ben 10,000 episode), and Paradox isn’t one to allow its use frivolously. Gwen had to break into Hex’s library and this was a last resort Paradox himself warned against. An episode where Ben used time travel to prevent Jimmy Jones leaking his identity could have been interesting, and seeing how some episodes of that first season could have played out without fame influencing the events.

Im glad u noted that the Omnitrix remained unhacked. I wish we saw more of Ben fighting thru this dystopian city with patrols around every corner trying to get him, and how long the Omnitrix can help him stay on the run (but this is Gwen’s story). I always assumed Ben over-exerted the Omnitrix trying to survive, but have no way to prove that, or whether the watch got hit by magic. And yeah, I have no clue how these events unfolded. It was just so Gwen would face her archenemies.

I feel like this is one of episodes that conceptually seems like it would be very potent emotionally and to some extent it is, what with Gwen literally trying to re-write time so Kevin is no longer in so much pain and anguish only to have to come to terms with the fact that she simply can't change his current condition, but on the other hand the lack of detail and depth in the plot itself kinda prevents a lot of the character drama from really shining through

I understand why this episode has a low rating. In my case, what always stucked with me about this episode is how Ben briefly went back to his early UAF characterization because of the bad future. It's a small thing but it was somewhat neat to see him with his proper characterization again even if it was just a moment.

I always imagined that the sole reason trio lost in other timeline wasn't because Kevin didn't get stronger it may be the fact that he didn't get resistance to mind control while in original continuity he maybe did get resistance to it likewise when servantis tried to manipulate him but kevin was able to control certain mind wave to prevent hypnosis and also in AF when charmcaster tried to manipulate him by using magic mind control which was temporarily supported by that pendent implying that she didn't get full control over mutated kevin and maybe without resistance to mind control neither Gwen nor Ben were able to unbound him but in contrary they couldn't kill him at the same time.That could be reasonable way this would had happened there.

When you start breaking down Ben 10 Ultimate Alien you should add an Ultimate Counter everytime Ben (or Albedo if you wanna count him) goes Ultimate if you have finished the final battle breakdown start with the counter with 1 since your boi Swampfire was the first went Ultimate by Ben

Swampfire was the first and the last Alien used with Recalibrated Omnitrix and also the first Ultimate Form used by Ben with Ultimatrix. We saw Albedo for the first time in Humangasaur with copy Omnitrix. And got to see his Humangasaur Ultimate form in the last episode.

Actually this episode kinda makes sense with the reason why Charmcaster won. Charmcaster decided to take Kevin due to her spellbook being taken. Then Kevin easily tricks Gwen and Ben since Gwen doesn't need to hit the books (try to cure Kevin). Kevin ends up still being controlled while Charmcaster is stealing Gwen's mana. Finally Gwen couldn't help ben defeat Kevin leading to his own defeat, Gwen becomes powerless and (eventually) killed by charmcaster, and Kevin, still under Charmcaster's...charm, ends up fully transforming into a golem.

Probably My Only complain about this episode is that we Never saw the events that would have LED to Charmcaster and Hex conquering the world had Kevin not mutated due to hacking the Omnitrix Not Even a cold opening at the beginning of the episode showing Ben and co defeating them easily and then show it was Only thanks to Kevin's mutation

This episode makes sense because it lines up with the "in charms way " episode because charmcaster motive was to manipulate kevin because of his insecurities of being mutated and using this to attack gwen. Since kevin didnt mutate charmcaster needed a new plan of attack and needed hex help. Charmcaster and hex probably absorbed gwen powers then killed her. Hex could have also used a powerful spell to destroy the plumbers making team tennyson the only resistance.

SADEST episode in entire af for me personally. seeing gwen is dead ( well not really seeing but you know what I mean ) kevin is a rock monster and ben is captured. basically all the good guys LATERALLY lost. yes af tried take things more serious than classic but it was still a kid show and HANDS DOWN this was a really dark episode for a kid show i really don't know how did i even watched it back then

Godyeah rewatching this episode I just think of so many ways the trio could have beaten them two. I kinda wish we had some more explanation as to what happened. Hex already knew gwen had time travelled so i think its likely he had some sort of master plan from the moment he knew but like, I just don't know what exactly kevin losing his mutation would have to do with that. Another comment seemed to suggest maybe forced absorption and mind control which would make sense, and there was the earlier Charmcaster episode where she did absorb gwens powers, but it begs the question how did ben even get defeated along with all of his allies? See I love this episode still even without the explanations but I think if it was given more explanation or even just showing how things happened it could have been so much better.

I'd say that this was one of the best Gwen focused episodes in the UAF era. Dark alternate futures are really interesting, especially if done well. And I'd say it was in this case. Btw, when Alien Force was still airing,I watched this episode before the finale,so I thought the episode with Ragnarok was the episode before the series finale. Guess I was wrong,to which I'm glad I am.

My only thought on how they lost was the earlier charmcaster episode played out similarly except with Hex knowing what happens, they avoid Gwen getting her mana back. Perhaps the artifact used in the darkstar and Kevin episode in season 3? Doesn't explain Ben being trapped. Although, it actually makes me say that maybe this should have been a 2 parter. Start with the shock opening of the gang being defeated (in part due to Kevin lacking his mutation) and then we go into time travel shenanigans. That way it starts off with a bang, and then we also get to see how they lost. Then they could've explored more what happened in that world and what happened to the plumbers helpers, Grandpa Max, and perhaps others. That way it lets the story breathe and explains some things. I still enjoy it though. But perhaps part of it is because of the mystery or what could've been than the actual episode.

yeah that episode is another case of good concept not executed that well. On paper I like the idea, but I kinda wish we got to see more of that future and how it came to be. Paradox's scenes were great though, and Ben has a great heroic moment in it.

Even if Hex took over the world, I feel he'd have his own distinct vibes of dark future. At least Shredder had killbots with his adopted daughter's face, and was using Earth's resources with his tech knowledge to built an army to go forth and conquer.

Y'know what would've been cool in this bad timeline? If either Charmcaster or Hex had taken the Omnitrix from Ben. That would've been awesome to see and the distopian future would've been more justified.

Honestly while I like this episode, I understand why this episode gets a low rating. Out all of the time travel episodes in the franchise, this episode is definitely the weakest one with a lot of plot holes that doesn’t make sense

The premise of Rock man Kevin being the only being on earth who could've stopped Hex and Charmcaster is really dumb. Like seriously no one else? Not the kid who can become all kinds of aliens, some with deity level power? Not the other kids with alien powers? Not the guy who knows how to mutate animals into Kaiju, and probably wouldn't like competition in world take over? But a bootleg Metamorpho who can only morph his hands and can't become anything else? And why did Hex decide to come out of retirement the minute Kevin was cured? It makes no sense!

My only theory on this episode is this I wished In UAF Gwen just fights in her lucky girl attire rather then her normal clothes because honestly if Ben turns into aliens and kevin uses materials then this would make sense for Gwen to help the team with her magic as her own superhero. And also I hate how she only wheres her Lucky Girl costume in Time Heals & Enemy of my Frenemy for no longer then 5-6 Mins it made me so bored because I was like Gwen help Ben & Kevin as Lucky Girl that way no one knows your secret ID except for your Cousin & BF & Grandpa & Grandma & Your Parents.

for the was alternate ben acts when he interact w/ Gwen prime I want to say that following his world's Gwen's death it probably shook of the arrogance he developed at the start of S3. because alt. Ben seems to carry an amount of guilt. from my observations anyway

I feel like when all hope is lost and Ben is in a situation like this he should just transform into alien X and even if he has to spend eternity convincing those 2 he would still rewrite everything that had happened but since this isn’t prime Ben he doesn’t have plot armor
