THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

Albedo is better the way he is. A smart, intimidating villain who seems to be pre-occupied with himself. That's what makes him more charming than the 'evil Ben' of this episode as this Ben isn't busy with himself and is full-time pre-occupied with beating/teasing/scaring others.

voters decided this one and only time. It is what it is. But in a tiny rant, it's a shame Kuro didn't start doing shorts sooner, like beginning of S3. We had to go through some real stinkers that got 15+ minute discussions, so it's a shame that stuff like fool's gold, simple, and inferno got full treatments while brilliant episodes like this and Time Heals, or at least potentially interesting discussions like Primus got cut down. But again, it is what it is. I know the entire crew is swamped as is and has a schedule to maintain

Such a awesome episode. I wish this got voted ahead of “Secrets Of Chromastone” but can’t complain. It’s sad that was the last time that the “Plumber Kids” together, even through they appeared in Ultimate Alien and Omniverse. Fun fact: Only episode that Gwen and Kevin doesn’t appear in Alien Force

While I agree this episode was great, and I would have loved a full breakdown, I think it's best this way. Secret of Chromastone is a huge lorecentric episode, and so it has much more importance to Ben 10 as a whole. As opposed to this episode which, while great, was completely self contained and doesn't add anything to the series lorewise.

Too bad Alien X-tinction nerfed the hell out of both Alien X and Ben, (an Adult Ben 10,000 btw, who should be vastly more experienced even without his Gwen and Max to guide him) so yea, sucks they didnt go all the way cuz Ben would and is fucking terrifying as a villain, especially with master control which would basically make any fight against him hopeless since either himself or the omnitrix itself will change his form to prevent him from dying from nearly any attack, even wiping away the entire universe wouldnt work if the Omnitrix transforms him into Alien X or possibly multiple other forms that could survive something like that

I remember watching this as a kid and basically yelling at my tv, “It’s Albedo!”. I thought he broke out of space jail, and (somehow) recolored himself back as Ben. Needless to saw I was wrong, but let that say just how invested in the episode.

What would have made Above and Beyond better is if Cooper was in on the fact it was a training mission. Since having him be the one controlling the doors and also having the defenses go off makes sense. As he can hide the fact he's on the Satellite from the others with his abilities.

I do quite like these shorter breakdowns, they don't feel rushed and get all the important points across, and Kuro's opinions are well spoken. What I like about the longer breakdowns is just hanging out with Kuro so to speak and seeing him fuck about and drop random trivia, like who's voicing who or random animation and art notes. The ones with Ash are even more enjoyable having someone to bounce off of

" I mean, I can get the frustration of wanting to be consistent with content and then for scheduling reasons suddenly having to take 3-4 months off like last year. I've seen other people doing retrospectives of series that easily end up taking 5+ years because of that. That's just not a fun weight on your shoulder that you either give up on or simply grind out and get drained out of creatively. Neither are fun for the viewer to witness. "but what if more people were here for these reactions, ya know?" really depends on the crew at the end of the day. Let's be real here, it's not like covering a series that 1. isn't currently running as of now (tho I wouldn't be surprised if we got an announcement this year) 2. that is varied in quality and fan reception, to such a point that many were turned off by the reboot 3. targeting a more 20's-30's demographic's nostalgia, instead of the more lucrative teen/children's market. are optimal from a views/revenue point of view. So to some extent the entire team is doing this out of a love more than the potential money to be gained covering other, more recent action shows/movies. but in terms of views: the breakdowns are mid. not the highest viewed stuff compared to one offs like top 10's, theorycrafting, or "how does X work", but they are consistent content to put out (at least for a long while)

I agree. That episode might not be THAT important, but it's definitely one of the best, and along with Con of Rath, one of the arguments that make me feel like Season 3 does have some redeeming quality. Evil Ben is one of the creepiest things ever, and it's really nice that they play up his competence and experience. Who knew Ben was so good at being a villain?

This is his way of still giving us breakdowns while he works on other bigger projects. I'll take these shorter breakdowns over not getting any at all. Keep up the great work Kuro! I honestly don't know who is scarier, this version of him acting evil, being TERRIFYINGLY calm because he KNOWS just how superior he was to his rivals. Or the serious Ben against Ultimate Kevin, where there were no attempts of reasoning, nor jokes, just a soldier knowing what he had to do, and WILLING to do it.

I love it when writers do this. When they show that the heroes are very much capable of being villains and show a dark side of them. How dangerous and how much of a threat they can be. It gives me chills knowing they are capable of being evil if they wanted to, but they choose not to.

@@diegopansini3152Not the last time, we see this side of him again when he faces Keven in Fort Los Soledad, as well as the events leading up to it. He was fully prepared to put Keven down, and he made his intentions clear. That’s part of the reason I hated Omniverse so much. (Well that and the fact it seemed every episode had to retcon something) With Omniverse it’s like this growth never happened.

Ben pretending to have turned to test Max’s team is a great way to use the hero to villain trope in a relatively underused way. No half assed defection excuse, possession, evil twin or morality inversion device, and it serves a purpose beyond let’s make the hero evil. Ben in this episode feels the closest to his pre-season three characterisation and given the personality shift that’s for the better even though it will only last a short time. Minor niggle is that the facing a crisis to learn teamwork trope is overdone, and you’d think by now Max’s team would have learned that since they’ve been working together for two season’s worth of episodes now, and teamed up with Team Tennyson numerous times. Helen, Manny and Pierce worked with Max in the Null Void fighting Dr Animo.

Back when I first watched this episode, I just thought that Ben was just Albedo who somehow changed his look back to looking like Ben. I did love this episode, especially since it gave Rath his own alien transformation sequence. It was also good that Cooper wasn't there since the whole story would have been a bust for Ben and Max. Now I can't wait for Secrets of Chromastone, the one I voted for in the poll, to get it's review out this week.

I really wish Cooper was in this episode. Maybe Ben and Max could’ve tampered with his powers to prevent Cooper from discovering the truth, as his powers are the reason why he isn’t present here. Or at the very least give some lip service in-universe as to his absence

This was one episode that I watched over and over again as a kid. The first time I saw it, I actually thought that Ben turned evil until the twist was revealed in the end.

It’s good to stick with the poll to be fair, but I wouldn’t have minded waiting a week or two for a full episode. Part of the draw for this series to me is your reactions to scenes and how it differs from mine, but I know you don’t have infinite time. I wonder if this ties into the fact that we see ben be more ruthless in the episode Absolute power. It really does show that he does in fact have the potential to do great harm. Here he is pretending but in absolute power we see the potential seeds that can plant the pathway down a path for him to potentially actually be like this.

Rath vs Manny Fight is the biggest highlights of this episode his moves felts too brutal. As if he was going to kill Manny. Also Big Chill looks too scary and freaky just like GhostFreak It suits so well I love it.

When Alien Force was still brand new me and my little brother would drop everything when the new episodes would premiere. I still remember that this episode was some of the most fun we had with a one. When it cut to commercial me and him were spit balling ideas as to why ben had turned evil, Was it albedo that reversed his "mutation"? Did ghost freak somehow survive Ghost town and possess Ben? And one of my favorite ideas of ours, Did villgax clone ben and made a second (or I guess Third) omnitrix? That last one may not make much sense but we were 10 and 5 at the time. All in all a great episode and way to grow closer with my brother.

I think its a pity Ben 10 never fully endorsed an Evil Ben as a proper villain. I know Vilgax had that plan in Omniverse, but they were never developed and even Evil I doubt Ben would ever willingly side with Vilgax. Imagine an Evil Ben with all his knowledge of the world, his aliens and most importantly, how exactly to hurt Prime Ben (Target his family, his home etc) It would have been sick.

I....honestly didn't realize that THIS was this episode. I haven't watched the series in a while, so I'm not familiar with the names, but I remember never particularly caring about the plumbers helpers. Like, they're good characters, but I remember never really caring for the episodes. But if I'd realized THIS was the episode the pill was referring to, well...despite that it wouldn't have made much of a difference, I would've voted differently

When I first saw this I was racking my brain to figure out what was going on with Ben (Albedo, Z'skayr taking over)? The Max force was great, we should have gotten more of them and this is the last episode Pierce is in before he dies. Please do Vendetta the continuity needs to analyzed.

I sometimes wish we found what alien Ben turned into before Goop because it dosen't tell you who Ben turned into when Pierce entered the room all you got was the Omnitrix timing out. My guess is Brainstorm beacuse Singlehanded was his last apperance and pretty much it would perfect since we won't see till Ben 10 UA Escape From Aggregor.

Excited for the final episode review of alien force :) I love the 2 part season 3 finale!!! Especially the introduction to ultimatrix and ultimate aliens!!! Ultimate aliens is my favorite of Ben 10 and if given the chance I would go for the ultimatrix as my watch of choice :) (No joke I actually made 2 entire au with ultimate aliens in omniverse. One where ben kept ultimatrix v1 and another where ben got the ultimatrix v2 instead of albedo.)
