Weird History presents Timeline and the year 1988. In 1988, we would see one of the largest oil spills ever with the Exxon Valdez, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Mike Tyson, take one an undefeated opponent in one of the biggest boxing matches of the century and the release of Eddie Murphy's iconic "Coming to America." Check out Timeline 1988 for the news, sports, culture, and all that was weird. Weird History's Timeline: The 80s.

I'm from Syracuse, and the Lockerbie bombing entry in this video really stood out. 35 SU students coming home for Christmas break were on that plane, and let me tell you, for that to happen 4 days before Christmas really altered the overall feel for the holiday around here. You'd run into at least one person that was related to someone, or whose sibling was a friend with and/or had been in a class with someone at some point that were attending SU. There's a memorial dedicated to them up on campus. Anyway, sorry that was so long, but that incident really meant something (at least to me that is). Anyway, the video was REALLY good though. I love this series and when I saw this one was almost a half hour long, I was stoked. I know there's a lot of time invested in making these videos, and it definitely shows. You should be commended for it! Thanks for sharing them with us!👍🏻

I was born in 87 so I didn't expect to remember any of the events as I was still a baby however I'm surprised I didn't hear about some of them while I was growing up. What surprised me even more was how minimal airport security remained up until 2001 despite the fact that there had been airplanes that crashed due to bombs being detonated on board.
@streamofconsciousness5826
@streamofconsciousness5826 Жыл бұрын
I think security for bombs and explosives was tight but out of sight, when they used planes as missiles using only "boxcutters" things changed. That's why they caught the shoe bomber guy, they just started looking in smaller possible cavities for blades. There is also a "display of security" so people feel confident while at the Airport and to deter attempts.

What I love about this series is finding out all the news that I missed, thanks to not having a television back in the 80s, when I was in my twenties, most of the time. But I also didn't watch news because it was mostly bad news, and it was just a downer most of the time. But it's also a flashback to the culture, hairstyles, clothing styles, and music that we were into back then. Nobody realized how cheesy we could be back then.

I'm born in 88, thanks for this amazing timeline videos! though I never really "lived" in the 80s in a sense that I can relive and remember them, somehow they are in my genes, in my blood so to speak. I can feel them and feel that they must have been very unique! play a synth line and you've got me goosebumps, that's the way I feel about the 80s :-)

LOVE this series, thank you so much for putting the time + work into each vid for us. I'm not hinting at anything I promise, but I'd love to see someone do a similar series for the UK and Ireland's cultural and political landscape over the same time period (I'm Welsh), what a roller coaster the 80s were there too :)

Yay! We finally got to my birth year! I was excited to see all the history that happened the year I was born. I'm surprised you didn't mention that "The Phantom of the Opera" opened on Broadway in January. It's gone on to be Broadway's longest-running show and, when it first came out, was an absolute smash hit, the "Hamilton" of its day.

Wow....watching your Timeline videos is always fun. This one hit home at 12:25, I was supposed to be on that bus as a 12 year old at Radcliff Elementary located at 1145 S Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY 40160. I was sick and couldn't go. I lived in Hardin County, Ky at that time and that bus was loaned from Meade County school district, where I ended up going to middle and high school. The Carrollton County bus crash was big news then and I lost friends, but at 12 didn't know the magnitude of what happened. I honestly forget everything about that day, until I seen that clip and at 44, the feelings just came back.

haha that damn home run broke my heart and then I changed from an A's to a Yankees fan (we had no team of our own in Denver then) and Don Mattingly fanboy and that caused them to go on pretty much their longest World Series absence in team history and the single greatest baseball player of all time never got a single world series attendance nor did he qualify for the HOF because of that. And then they Yanks get the ring in 96 the very next year after he retires. I should have stayed an A's fan... =D

Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs were definitely the best American league players of the 80s. At least 220+ hits every year? Come on. But Boggs wasnt a decent all around sports star like Donnie, Boggs was cheating on his wife, drinking massive amounts of beer before games and off field, getting in fights, arrested etc

The 1987-88 NBA season is arguably the greatest in history. The MVP race between Jordan, Bird, and Magic; Jordan as the first MVP to also become Defensive Player of the Year, the first DPOY to win the scoring title, and the first player to accumulate 200+ steals with 100+ blocks in a season twice; Bird becoming the first player to be in the 50-40-90 club twice; Jordan vs Wilkins iconic dunk contest; Bird's legendary 3pt contest threepeat; Bird vs Wilkins Game 7 duel; Isiah's sprained ankle game; Lakers fulfilling Pat Riley's repeat guarantee (ending the league's drought since 1969); Worthy recording the first ever Game 7 triple-double; Stockton finally unleashed from the bench to begin his nine consecutive assists titles along with racing Jordan and A. Robertson (all-time steals per game leader) for the steals title; and so on and so forth. It also featured at least 22 eventual Hall of Fame players: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Adrian Dantley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Alex English, Dominique Wilkins, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Reggie Miller.
