Mechanical SLR's meant skilled photographers could take the exact photo they wanted, not what was handed to them by a computer. The films also captured richness of color, grain, and contrast that is very distinctive, and had to replicate in a digital pic unless you're trained at Photoshop. At the end of the film era, I bought a Hasselblad 500c on eBay and ran a few rolls of Kodak Portra 160 film through it. Even having no idea what I was doing, the photos came out absolutely stunning.

The World has always been dangerous. Crime rates are actually lower now than back then. We are just more aware of it bc of cell phone cameras everywhere and social media. The 2nd amendment is for self defense. The Government cannot protect you from criminals. The government can only clean up the aftermath. The world is a dangerous place. My dear departed Mother married at 16, I was born when she was 20. We grew-up together. She was and remains my very best friend. We were the same size but I was one inch taller and about 10-15 pounds lighter. My Mother rocked Hot Pants, halter tops and GoGo Boots when I was in high school. When it was time to get dressed every morning the first one to hit 'our closet' had dibs for that day. Being the same size, including shoes/boots, doubled our wardrobe. When I moved into my first apartment Mother and I were shocked how our wardrobe diminished. I made new velvet blazers in every color for Mother, she felt she needed variety. Plus that was the only way I would have any of the original velvet blazers. I flew with my parents to San Francisco for the first time in 1970. Mother was always well-dressed. Each and every day people stopped her on the street asking for her autograph. I finally asked Mother to just say 'of course' and give them the autograph so we could continue our sightseeing. (Canterbury Hotel staff constantly asked me 'what's her stage name?'. I always replied 'to me she is Mother'.)

I found a book one time about the size of a yearbook. It had the USMC seal on the outside. I opened it and it was, in fact, a yearbook that contained different photos and just as a high school yearbook, an entire section was dedicated to the boot camp graduating classes of 1972. I flipped through the pages of the soldiers in their dress blues. On the next to the last page, I saw him. There was my Daddy, also in his dress blues. He was expert at both the rifle and pistol. His specialty was working on and operating amphibious vehicles. Sadly, he was given a medical discharge a couple years later with the rank of PFC. That was the moment that I realized that my Daddy was much cooler than I would ever be. He was a Marine. He was one of the few, the proud. Most of all, he was my Daddy.

My grandfather, dad's father, served in WWI and was brought back to active duty in WWII. He was a Lt Colonel, but my grandmother was cooler. We found out in the 80s that my grandmother had held a higher security clearance than he did. Never did know exactly what she did. When asked she said "It's called a SECURITY CLEARANCE!." But, she was doing it raising my dad and my uncle alone while my grandfather was away in the war. Apparently, my grandfather didn't even know. We only found out going through some of her papers after she had a stroke. She slept with her father's Colt 44-40 revolver under her pillow into her 80s. She would take us fishing when we were little. We would be bombing down a two lane black top and she would whisper "oops." We asked what and she said, "had to slow down I was doing 90. Don't tell your mother." Her last car was a Cutlass with floor shift automatic, bucket seats, mag wheels, and a CB radio. She used the CB regularly. You did not challenge her to a stop light drag race unless you were willing to tell your friends you were roasted by a white haired old lady with a sweater around her shoulders. At the next light she would lean forward so they saw who beat them. She could cuss out a sailor without batting an eye or be the perfect lady in a formal evening gown. I stopped by her house once on the way home from college. She had been complaining about some man who kept calling her phone looking for some woman and he refused to believe he was dialing the wrong number. The phone rang while I was standing there and she answered it. It was the man. My grandmother told him. "she can't come to the phone, she's in the bed with Big Ed." She hung up and said, "I don't think he'll be calling anymore, but boy he was mad."

I'm 57, a woman, and was a teen back in the 1970's. I miss that era so much. People actually paid attention to each other while in a group...and not to some digital device. Rock music was awesome as was much of the clothing. Anymore it seems like most people just wear ripped jeans a t shirt and a baseball hat. Back then, there were all kinds of cool looking clothes, and patterns and colors. Yeah there was some bad looks, but no one blinked an eye if someone in a fringed brown suede jacket and a 'Billy Jack' hat walked down the street. : ) Those hats were far more cool than the stupid baseball caps so popular now.

I'm sure my mom, in the 198O's, would have loved a cell phone when a man ran over his cousin with a 4-wheeler, so maybe she would have been able to contact the police faster. Maybe he'd still be alive. But yeah, what a better time then, 'phone bad,' after all.

I'm trying to say that phones have not diminished the quality of life we have, nor our social aspects.

AWESOME! I have always known my parents were cool. My father was a river boat pilot in ALASKA in the 50's. At 29, he proposed to my mom in the wheelhouse of the boat, she was 19 and worked as a waitress on another boat on the river. He built her a cabin up there, I think maybe even two of them. We have slides of us the kids in boats floating near the cabin that was built on stilts or oil drums in case the river flooded, which it did. When my mom got tired of the cabin, 4 or 5 kids with no running hot water she did not want to go anymore, so they bought a house in Santa Barbara in the 70's. My dad worked hard, we were not rich by any stretch of the imagination, just frugal. Santa Barbara is considered the "Riviera of the Western hemisphere" I have always felt quite thankful and blessed to have such AWESOME parents. AND, the best thing, they stayed married and never, never cheated on each other, they had morals and integrity not often seen today. Proud of my parents.

I'm so emotional 😂 do y'all think about how their lives were back then? Like as if you were there watching it all happened. They were like us and now they're old and we'll get old as well. This made me think about my dad in the army. He has pics on top of places that you would now just see in parkour videos. There's one pic of him stand up walking normally while the rest of them are walking like a cat (legs and hands on the "floor"), with no ropes or security. There's also one of him doing australian rappel and there's another of him on a rope coming down from an helicopter. He's now 52 years old and when in my birthdays he will happily do karting or tree climbing with me. We also went camping and kayaking last year. Not many parents would be down for any of those. My dad once heard his name in a radio channel. The man said very good things about him. He was a Sargent like nobody else. He is also mentioned in a blog of a known man over here. They all say that my dad was a really good man. Even while doing his job as a Sargent he would always brighten things up and make jokes now and then. He has lots of stories and I love listening to them. Nowadays he's not in the army anymore but he works with the government and he's doing a master in a university at the same time. He's the oldest of his class. How many people can say that they're dad works with the government? Not many for sure. He's for sure the best dad of all times hehe

As a senior, I'm finally transferring all my slides, negatives. and printed photos to digital (with a copy on a hard drive for each) myself so my adult kids can see that their Mom and Grandparents were 'kinda cool' at one time too. Most of the cool stuff we never took photos of either, we just lived it and enjoyed the experiences. I don't have many selfies since it was a strange and vain concept then to set up a shot of yourself and then run to pose before the timer went off. That is probably the reason most seniors scoff at Millenials taking shots of even the food on their plate and so many selfies now!

@@michaelwolgroch958 I had two jobs, didn’t go anywhere and still couldn’t pay bills. So with prices more than quadrupled and min wage only up a few dollars it makes a huge difference.
