The moment Burt Reynolds propelled the Black and Gold Trans Am into movie folklore. In America in 1977 the original Smokey and the Bandit film had been beaten into second place at the box office only because it was the same year Star Wars was released.
Burt Reynolds was arguably at this time the biggest name in Hollywood. The car he drove in the movie was about to turn for Pontiac a car that had produced reasonable but unspectacular sales figures, into a golden egg. In the days before product placement was noticeable in film and long before “tipping point” become part of marketing vernacular, the car that emerged from the back of a Semi trailer and into the hearts and minds of the people could hardly be more stark.
For a 10 year old boy living in suburban North London, England this film and more to the point THIS CAR, started a boyhood fascination for this stunning sleek machine. This turned into an adult journey that took 25 years to complete. The story of this can be found at: timrogersmt.com/trans-am/

I love Billy Bob Thornton’s quote that said something to the effect of “Growing up in the South, we didn’t think of this as a movie, we considered it to be a documentary.” Profound stoicism for certain.

My Dad passed away in 1979. We went to the theater to see this movie and I can still see him laughing his ass off watching this movie. When this movie came out, my dad was the body shop manager at the local Pontiac dealer. He bought my mom a T/A identical to this one. Had the AM/FM radio with built-in 40 channel CB radio. I was a kid caught up in the CB craze at the time, so this was heaven for me. They went to see this movie at a drive in, in that car. My dad fishtailing it through the parking lot while finding a spot to watch. Doesn't get much cooler than that, unless they had taken me along with them.

I grew up without much money on a dirt road in Texas. But I saw the Smokey &TB movie when I was a kid and was equally obsessed. Although my parents were strict and we didn't have much, I somehow convinced them to let me spend my own life savings on an old (late 80s at the time) 1977 Trans Am. It was my dream car. The engine blew up literally the first night I drove it, but my dad helped me swap a junkyard 455 ("great" idea for a 16 year old kid to drive, right?!?). I drove it like a Duke boy, often power sliding around corners on the dusty dirt roads of Texas (not condoning that behavior, but I will say it was a blast). Still my favorite car I ever had by a mile.

A lot of people don't realize that the car is actually a 1976 Trans Am with a 1977 front bumper. They had to do slight modifications to make it fit and have the body lines match up. the 1977 model wasn't on the market when filming began, so GM provided them with the front bumper - brilliant advertising.

The engine sounds were also dubbed in, since the factory motor didn't sound "tough" enough. The sounds were actually recorded from the '55 Chevy that Harrison Ford drove in American Graffiti (powered by a built, tunnel-rammed Chevy 427 big block).

I remember my folks taking me and my brother to see this in the theater in 1977. I was nine. It was the first real "adult" action movie they let me watch, and I just sat on the edge of my seat, saucer-eyed, for the entire show. My dad was a truck driver, and I was totally into trucks, and cars, so this movie pretty much checked all the boxes for me. Good memories.

Same here. My dad wasn't a truck driver, but I fell in ❤with that Trans Am when it first appeared. I asked my dad if we could buy one, and he looked at me in shock and said, "No! Have you got any idea how EXPENSIVE they are?" Then I asked my dad if we could get a CB radio, and he said "No, those are only toys for adults." Dad worked hard to keep the wolf from the door and was very conservative, since he grew up during the Great Depression and WW2, and I was too young and silly to appreciate that. But I loved the movie anyway. Jackie Gleason was too funny as Sheriff Buford T. Justice. 😆

Jerry's gone now and Fred has long since passed, and at this point Burt isn't far behind at 82! Sadly, most of the cast are now DECEASED. Saw this movie when it came out and we only had ONE movie theater where I lived and they showed it a couple weeks at a time! I got into the CB craze in the early-to-mid 70's and it was lots of fun. No computers, no internet, no cell-phones, smart-phones, texting or email. Back then people interacted FACE to FACE!

Mike Hawk, Hahahaha!!!!! They have to be a complete fucking morons to not get what you were saying. As a kid in 1977, talking on the telephone was the LAST thing I wanted to do. I was playing OUTSIDE or riding my bike. Talking on the phone wasn't on my list of activities. Just because there were telephones in 1977 doesn't negate the fact people interacted far better in 77 than we do now!

These 3 guys, Gleason, Reed and Reynolds have all passed away and this movie is 45 years old and is still one of the most iconic movies ever made. Nothing made today even come close to being as funny. This was the number 1 movie until Star Wars hit the screen knocking it back to the number 2 slot. And Smokey and the Bandit still gets more air play than Star Wars.
