"Diablos Rojos" in Antigua, Guatemala
All you Americans (and everyone else) check it out! Former American school buses that used to transport kids and children from home to school and school trips have found a 2nd home in Guatemala. Kind of nice (don't you think/) to retire in style, all painted up to look cool, and transport people to various places.
Antigua is a city 1 hour West of the capital of Guatemala (Guatemala City)
Check out 9:01 for a very angry dude giving the finger - why? haha
A chicken bus (Spanish: "trambilla", the latter a hypercorrection of "tranvía") is a colloquial English name for a colorful, modified and decorated bus that transports goods and people between communities in various Latin American countries, especially Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. In the latter country, chicken buses are also known as "Diablos Rojos"
The base vehicle is usually a retired North American school bus on a light or medium truck chassis. The word "chicken" may refer to the fact that the buses are often crammed with passengers not unlike a truck load of chickens, or to the fact that Central Americans occasionally transport live animals on such buses-a practice that visitors from other countries often find remarkable. In Panama, the base vehicle can also be a passenger Toyota HiAce or Toyota Coaster or similar and is often left painted white. If a Toyota Coaster is used, the bus is known locally as a "Chiva", and if a Toyota HiAce is used, the van is called a "busito" instead.

Stamp of approval from this Guatemalan transit fan! Some background here: Outside of the capital, the buses in smaller towns are always school buses operated by private companies, each with its unique paint scheme. They dedicate themselves to multiple specific towns and routes, sometimes competing. The red/white/green one at 1:54 serves San Pedro, the one at 3:01 (run by Transportes Herrera) serves Jocotales, and Transportes San Andres at 3:18 serves San Antonio. The funny thing is that Guatemalans themselves don't called them chicken buses nor the Spanish equivalent. They're just "camionetas". Those running into the capital are officially called "Extraurbanos" ; they serve a similar function like the express bus lines in many American transit agencies, but are much more frequent. For example, Rutas Quetzal from the nearby Ciudad Quetzal in the west runs down San Juan Boulevard to the Trebol, while Transportes Fraijanes runs from the town of Fraijanes in the east into the Terminal in Zone 4. The long distance and tourist-oriented companies use real coach buses and are often called Pullmans regardless of make (MCI, Busscar, DINA, etc). Some examples are Giralda to the border of El Salvador, Alamo and Xela Bus to Quetzaltenango, Fuente del Norte all the way to Tikal and Peten. It is on these lines that you will see used Greyhounds.

Thank you Timothy for a fascinating video. I am wondering where in the world is 'Winter Community School District'. Not in Guatemala! I guess that most of the passengers we saw were not 'commuters' but shoppers at the huge open air market. This reminded me of the town in Hertfordshire (England) I grew up in the 1950ies. Every Tuesday there was a large open air market and several buses (some of them quite old but not ex-school buses) would bring shoppers in from the surrounding villages. Some parked very close to the market stalls, so shoppers using those buses would deposit their purchases on the bus and then go off to buy more! The parked buses also acted as waiting rooms - something which seems to be happening here!

This buses are reliable, except from the usual maintenance "set of tires, oil and brake jobs" those Navistar Diesel engines made by International are very cheap to maintain and built to last way over a million miles

Να ρωτήσω κάτι άσχετο; Γιατί τα σχολικά λεωφορεία στις ΗΠΑ δεν είναι "φυσιολογικά" όπως τα υπόλοιπα λεωφορεία στον κόσμο και έχουν αυτή τη μορφή με τη μηχανή μπροστά και την "μούρη" που ο οδηγός δεν βλέπει την άκρη του λεωφορείου; Ούτε πρακτικά είναι, ούτε άνετα και πιστεύω ούτε και ασφαλή! Μπορεί να μου απαντήσει κάποιος εμπεριστατωμένα, αν γνωρίζει φυσικά;

Here is the translation: "Should I ask something irrelevant? Why aren't school buses in the US "normal" like other buses in the world and have this shape with the engine in front and the "berry" that the driver does not see the edge of the bus? They are neither practical, nor comfortable and I believe nor safe! Can anyone answer me in detail, if he knows of course?"

My guess is that the buses with the nose are just the make for lower capacity ones. I’ve even seen from smaller buses like this used as transit buses for low capacity routes.
