Tinsley Yard of the 1980's and 1990's remembered

This feature length compilation is from my vast archive collection I have amassed over 30 years and this production encapsulates my visits in the late 1980's and early 1990's to the then "quite" active place of Tinsley Yard outside Sheffield. Locomotive classes frequently stabled at the Depot were classes 08, 20, 31, 37, 45, 47, 56 plus many visiting locomotives of the same classes on a variety of different workings in and out of the then fairly extensive yards to the North of the Depot. The area has changed so much since then being swallowed up by modern units but some infrastructure remains in a derelict condition. The public footpath behind where I did my filming from has long gone too so the only vantage point is from the old road bridge that crossed the yard entrances to the TMD. It is sad to witness the demise of this location as it was a popular viewing point for many and myself particularly as a half way point for my many trips North and Scotland (The poor wife and kids!!!). I utilised my trusty old full size VHS camcorder for the earlier shots so the quality is not brilliant and I have not lost too much in translation to Digital but the second camcorder used progressed up to super VHS format and is a distinct improvement on picture and sound (now in stereo). What a lovely video. I went there in the early 70s got some nice still shots of the Master & Slave shunters that use to push the wagons to the top of the hump. Got kicked out of the running shed,the one at the very top. It didnt stop me,as I used to go down the other side and keep out of sight. Oh the good old days. Thank's for bringing them back.

Lovely video mix. Nostalgia for the ears as well as the eyes. I grew up next to the South Staffs line near Norton Junction in the 70s/80s and used to play 'Identify the approaching engine by its sound' quite a bit before it hove into view. Familiar 'tunes' like the peculiarly phased up-spiralling high pitched whistle of a pair of 20's working hard, or the complex growl and chatter of a 37 lugging a clattering freight by. Glorious !

tinsley was the biggie for me in the early/mid 80s-used to do doncaster depot and works and sheff every other saturday,2p to the three magpies and healey mills on the other one.knottingley sneak round the depot on the shift change sunday lunch time thumbs up.goodness me they were the best days of my life,52 now

Many days of my youth was spent on these tracks messing about from climbing up the light tower and pinching the birds eggs , newting in the drain ponds and ferreting the bankings each side of the bridge for rabbits Never will I get these days back. I still walk up and down it now trying to re live my youth with my dogs. Brilliant childhood memory's

+Paddy Lawson Sounds very nostalgic indeed, I sympathise on just how you feel, I too look back on fondness of how I used to drive to Tinsley back in my more youthful days (Early - Mid Seventies) or just passing through spending a few hours watching the old generation Diesels trundle by, the sound and even the smell I can recall very vividly, like you say never to be relived. What a brilliant video we used to go up there a lot and see all the locos and even went the open day just before the depot closed its so sad to see such great depots and yards close we have lost some good depots in the north Tinsley Thornaby Immingham and Knottingley used to be packed full of 56s I live near Toton depot and some of the yards have gone but the depot is still as busy nice to see the Freightliner locos parked up at Toton everday thanks for the great video all the best.

Great stuff. Takes me back to my train spotting past. Just love the sound of a diesel moving off again from stationary at lights with a full train behind. The railways are a huge asset and resource to this country, I just can't understand why no politicians in power ever see it. It's an absolute disgrace how yards like Tinsley are left to decay then get conveniently sold off to some developer or supermarket chain that feks the place up forever. Another great marshalling yard was Healey Mills near Wakefield. Me and a friend went there way back in the early 80s. It was the first time I'd seen such a place in the flesh and it was amazing.I'd forgotten about those 13s. Great idea.

Yes I entirely agree with you, I too visited all those big marshalling yards around the area and indeed Scotland, they all look pretty pitiful now and an era has gone.... too much land has been sold and gone for good..... thanks for watching the video......best regards......Mark

I went there as a kid, got to look in lots of trains with my uncle who worked for BR, it was absolutely fantastic. Today, 30 years later I was inspecting the earthworks at the very site for Network Rail. Now a container hub, there is life back at Tinsley.

Most nostalgic and indeed great memories thanks! The 47 without numbers around 48mins was 47228, the only 47 in Rf Distribution livery not given standard bodyside cantrail orange strips (at Springburn during overhaul in July 1990). Ive modelled a few loco's in this era featured on this splendid recording. Also of note is that i see the time you uploaded this, i was in dreamland that year, sharing my model loco's, and other things hehe, with a certain girlfriend who just so happened to be a loco driver around London (since 1990!). . . Mad times!!!!

Yes strangely, she was first a guard at Waterloo (getting to 'have a go' of 33/50's lol) before going onto OC to drive DMU's then the loco's from 1990. The second ever female loco driver at that depot by then. Indeed not many about, when with her about 7 years ago, there were only 12 UK wide. Makes it all the more mad that she was my funniest listener while doing the pirate radio dj'ing in London when we got to know each other hehe. If i never of called myself dj trainspotter since 1992 in the scene, we probably would never of met! A great honour showing her my phots/notes etc of OC, SF, HG, Reading etc in 80/90's and livery info, she was quite impressed lol. Unfortunately we didnt last but the experience, in her words, was unique. And dont i know it! One weird event (1000's more like it too), as you mention the western, was that i was on the fone to her while she waited to relieve a driver at either WN High Level or Stratford, and the 59 pulls in (stone to Daggers i think), and she says "oh its Hells Bells", the female driver at Westbury! So i had the mighty honour of hearing the only 2 ladies driving diesel loco's in London/southern England nattering away in a 59 lol! You cant make this stuff up eh . . . wot an absolute insane time that was during that year, there is some of her vids on my channel, and there are a few more to put up, cheers Aaron :)

That was a very enlightening blast into the past Aaron, and many thanks for that...I wonder if I ever met this lady as I was on the western in those days 1980s until 2002 with a break from 1983 - 1988 when I was on the Southern. I met many female drivers during my time and they were all brilliant and had a good sense of humour.... I miss them all....I wonder if we ever met at all too, quite possibly...Anyway thanks for your stories and I wish you a great new year and also to all those train crew out there....Stay safe and healthy......Mark

Anyone going to Tinsley depot in the early 1980's will remember the ridiculously cheap bus fares on Sheffield's buses at the time. The first time we went it was a young friendly conductor, and we thought he was joking when he said '2p please' We thought he was messing about, and asked him how much it really cost...It really is 2p he said laughing :) Armed with a loco shed directory, young lads could find any depot across the country. It was a bit like following a treasure hunt. It told you what bus to catch, and where to get off. The only thing it didn't tell you was how much the bus fare was. Alight at the Three Magpies pub, then into the newsagent to stock up on chocolate bars, crisps, pop, and 10 Benson & Hedges if you were more of the rebellious type. Then it was a trek up the big hill of Brinsworth Road, then under the motorway bridge, and finally the long access road to the depot. Walk over the bridge and be amazed at the size of the marshalling yards on ether side. Then walk straight past the '"Loco spotters prohibited' sign and up on the embankment overlooking the depot. Marvel at the long lines of locos stood silent over the weekend. Sneaking down the bank to cab the locos always made a shed visit more exciting. The crunch of the ballast underfoot always made it more of a risky venture. It was like sneaking behind enemy lines to young lads. Great days now erased in all but memory :)

Many thanks for that wonderful recollection, although I arrived by car having driven from the South I can totally feel the excitement and wariness one would have felt on such an adventure......Phil... have you ever thought of writing a book about your experiences? As for today's young enthusiasts will Most Likely never get to reenact those experiences. I would certainly for one be able to relate to those times (Early 70s - mid 70s) I expect older generations have some thrilling times to tell as well. You could collate them into a book....all the best....and again many thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching...Mark PS say no more about the bus fares, it breaks my heart....

I've been looking for lengthy footage of Tinsley for so long & then I find this. Absolutely fantastic, I was 5 when this was filmed & this was the first place I visited as a child with my father around this time. It was & always will be a magical place for me, seeing all the peaks in there last days. Thanks so much for posting, a real trip down memory lane Cheers Simon

We had such a good and wide rail network ages ago and not its so different and plain. I love the era of trains/rail we had back then. We could sure use it now! But sadly all the infrastructure is gone ☹️

Thanks for this,grew up in in Catcliffe a small mining village next to the south side trains would go over the bridge through the middle of the village and pints would rattle on the table in the red lion taproom when a big one went past although I was way too young for beer then, my dad worked as a fitter in the top shed for some years before he moved to Orgreave pit as the writing was pretty much on the wall,spent many an evening on the brdge watching it all,happy days, brings back good memories,cheers.

This brings a few things back, used to be a once a week trip with my dad to Tinsley Yard. I always though class 37s sounded like some great beast waking up from its slumber and clearing it throat when then accelerate, whilst class 20s sounded like a huge winged insect.

Mark, you truly deserve an Oscar.... Documenting a once busy Traction Maintenance Depot to today a none descript parcel of land. You could imagine the leg pulling, Mickey taking and comradeship that took place here. I used to visit Toton, riding my Raleigh Chrome Burner from New Basford. Fantastic video. Recording when we still had proper heavy engineering in Britain...... Absolutely fantastic.......

Hey yer, that track " the squiggly one " is amazing...& appears to be..a main yard EXIT one...as many others traveled out via that track...including the 37 on the flat empty wagons...which deffinatly had a good " Wee" around it...to begin its journey to..?? ~ a good long rake of " Roundie's would look absolutely incredible Squeee ing round there....!!!

yeh, great video..apart from the poor quality..ie.. somewhat Blurred in places.,,most likely due to time of day & position of the sun at the time, which is a pity, as there are some nice old ones to be seen here..many of which are probly sadly no longer with us...may they R.I.P....the piece in which 47 099 carrying both Roundie's, & Cargo Wagons..leaves the yard..by that " ONE " odd track, at the side of the little tunnel there...then when it gets above it litterally " Squeee' s " itself around that track, to leave the yard...Amazing..Love it mate..!!!.

steve wyman Yes the re rendering of the original video looses some quality and yes I too did suffer from low light conditions as the location is in a cutting and a lot of filming is in the early morning hours ( Fog,Mist,Drizzle,Smog from the M1 ha ha), I too am to blame for I never got the focus spot on as it was all manual settings in those days on my pre digital camera's. White balance, focus etc, some I corrected as best as my studio software will allow. and sadly those shots have all gone and as you say the locomotives too. What are wonderful place it was just a shame it’s not there now I’ll clean it was a shame it couldn’t be connected to the GC R they would be great use of those sheds etc

It was always an interesting place to visit, but sadly the decline made it a costly and not so productive depot to visit....sadly missed as so many others are....best regards to you...Mark

Only ever been there once , not the easiest of places to get to from Scotland, and I was only 16.. They track layout I never figured out 😅 why was the depo so high up ?

if i remember rightly they was a class 13 shunter based at tinsley as well

Adam Standell Yes there was indeed a class 13, they had two 08 shunter Locomotives with low cabs coupled together permanently I also seem to recall....many thanks Adam....Mark

The mile markers to London at 23:35 are always to Charing Cross - not St Pancras ..... The same applies on the roads.

AAhh Many thanks for that Daniel...I was not too sure, but it good to have that confirmed and is also interesting to know that also applies to the road network. I do know railway mileage markers can be to odd or surprising locations as appear around the southern network, due to very ancient services and regions. Again many thanks and best regards....Mark

Why didn't they turn Tinsley into an intermodal transhipment yard, when they must have noticed that containerisation was going to be the freight of the future. Been here years ago on the overbridge when all the sidings, were in situ and the 13''s were working, although only saw 2, never did cop! The last one.. Although the overheads were missing so must have been sometime in the 80's

many thanks David...Yes Tinsley would have made an excellent choice for an Intermodal Yard, being very central. Such a shame to see it as it is now, and yes seeing loco's back in the 70's and not recording them is one of my greatest regrets, especially the Deltics and class 40's.....best regards to you.....Mark

I know BR had its issues, but compared to what we have now. We have cut up the backbone of Britian and just left it to rot while the fat cats took their fill. We lots all the classic traction.

Thanks for your comment.....I suppose we do have remnants left of the era and before, I do think most of the diesel locomotives were due to be replaced but some classes should have remained a lot longer and only worked a short life on the railways. It's the coaching stock that should have been kept more instead of replacing what used to be 12 coach trains with these silly 2 or 3 car trains on long journeys. But now it is all privatised they all run like any normal business, competing and trying to make as much profit as possible. In some locations and on some routes services have improved, but at such a high cost to the fare paying passenger....whoops sorry ....customer.....best regards and enjoy what is out there for now.....Mark

iam happy you agree with me yes vintage electric is good especially those in industrial use. the modern stuff is crap especially when there are leaves on the line or when you fart near the overheads that causes mayhem and delays poor passengers thats what happens when they build modern shit electrics what a joke scrap the lot steam rules and do not forget it . it will allways rule..
