I've recently recycled my old Atom Netbooks both only supported 32 bit operating systems and a max of 2GB of RAM, so I rescued the SSD's I had installed in them and repurposed them. In their place I have a 10 year old Macbook Air which would no longer get updates, so I installed the 64 bit version of Linux Mint on it, even with only 4GB of RAM it handles most tasks really well. The battery charger had seen better days, so I found a suitable 3rd party replacement for that, they battery seems in good order but they are available and quite easy to change when the time comes. The screen size/resolution is as good as the Netbooks but I can connect it to an external monitor if needed. I hate having to recycle old computers when they still work, but the Netbooks were from 2009 so I can't really complain, both needed new batteries as well.

VLC is a bad choice of media player for this device as it's so CPU-heavy. You should try Media Player Classic.

Your best bet is Linux Mint 19.3 XFCE 32-Bit. I collect Intel Atom devices and I have tried countless operating systems on these especially-weak first-gen Atom devices. Trust me, Pop!OS, Lubuntu, etc. all run WORSE than Mint 19.3 XFCE 32-Bit, as do pretty much all "bespoke" lightweight distros. The reason is because they optimize their OS for the opposite bottleneck that these Atom netbook suffer from.

I did post a comment here previously but it seems like it's been deleted purely for mentioning a brand name, weird stuff! Either way a lightweight Linux with XFCE like Puppy (Jammypup might be the best bet) would probably fly on this. I have fond memories of using 4.2 with old P2/P3 era mini laptops. You might also be interested in the P8 laptop on a certain overseas reseller site with the initials A and E.

After this video my old Acer aspire one is dual booting linux mint and tiny 7 32 bit. Using windows I can use it like a portable monitor now with that video driver and a cheap usb hdmi capture card.

While the VAIO P series run a very old Atom SoC, the device's form factor is quite unique. One can think of it as the spiritual successor to the older C1 series (Picturebook). I'm impressed the trackpoint worked. Did you need to install a special driver for that? Also have you considered antiX Linux with Palemoon as the browser?

the major problem with this netbook is the VGA, this power VR / GMA 500 is on par with the i845g but with directx 10 support, its awful and it lags really bad even in aero glass. There is no official support for XP and 10/11. I know because i have one and i did tried everything

After the PSION 5 era i have always been attracted by these devices, BUT, after owning a super slow Netbook and PinePhone i eventually sold everything and bought a simple e-ink reader with Android and the battery charge lasts ONE MONTH, coupled with a keyboard case, and it fits in a pocket... I would never ever go back to anything else now.

I'm interested in where to get a functioning new battery for said device.

I would love to see Windows XP running there. I think Windows Vista is a very tight fit for that machine and XP is more appropriate. If you get it, I would ask you to share the drivers, as when I tried it, the ones I found were pretty bad. Thank you very much for your videos.

Could you try Windows 10 ltsb 2015 ? I find it the best windows 10 version for old hardware

All that crappy performance is a straight issue in the drivers.

I bought one last year, the top spec 2.13ghz Japanese version. Very very pretty but even on tiny10 absolutely useless!
