For one, I didn't know there was Google maps here in Uganda as 90% of the roads here have NO names 😳... I live here in Kampala, so here in Uganda we all go by landmarks to get to our destinations as many here don't even know how to properly give instructions or directions to get to your destinations which can be frustrating at times

Do you necessarily have to be with a Ugandan driving license ? Or can you use one from your country to drive here?

Great tips. Don't feel bad about the bribe ... it is sadly a fact of life in Africa and better to bribe the roadside cop than the jailhouse guard (which is where they don't mind leaving you to reconsider - without charge, without clothes, without letting your relatives know where you are).

Haha, thanks for making me feel better. It was sort of funny watching him fumble with his equipment and try to pretend he had proof I was speeding, and it was actually helpful getting a legitimate ticket so that I knew when he was lying to me.

I am from jamaica so driving on the left is ok i am use to that and the cash Bribe of cops i am use to that also most cops in 3rd world countries are way under paid its not right about the bribe but you have to look on the sitiuation on their behalf..one question i would love to visit sometime next year .is it ok to hire a tour guide to show you around the country even thou Uganda and jamaica have both same developin satus i would feel comfortable for one of the locals to show me around.

Hey thanks for the comment! I agree that it's good to try to see it from their point of view as well, many of them are likely working in dangerous condition for inadequate pay. In Uganda it seemed very common to hire a guide, most of the other tourists we met were being driven around the country by an experienced guide, and they all seemed to enjoy the experience!

Out of interest: How much was the bribery? What was the lowest you could get away with? Asking for a friend…

Good question! The first time we paid far too much, probably the equivalent of $50 USD. The 2nd time I knew the game, and only paid around $10 USD. Now having a bit more experience I would probably try talking for longer and getting out of it completely. I got one legitimate ticket in Uganda but the officer was very professional and showed me a clear photo on his radar unit with the indicated speed. When I asked the guy who wanted a bribe if I could see the photo he mumbled and fumbled and couldn't produce anything.
